Sharon, a respected Bellingham WA fine artist, first opened a storefront studio at the Bay Street Village Building in 2008. The gallery, called Works on Canvas, was a popular site for exhibits of Sharon's paintings as well as local artists' works. After working in a private downtown studio for the past 3 years, she recently opened a Furniture + Art Gallery space at 1418 N State Street with her husband showcasing her art alongside his company's mid-century modern furniture reproductions. Sharon's paintings are atmospheric and abstract, most mid to large scale, all contemplative and inspired by prose and poetry. They range in price from $300 to $3000 and are held in private collections throughout the US and Canada.
Meet the Business Owner: Sharon K.
I am a Bellingham-WA based artist whose paintings explore the landscape through metaphor and poetry. My most recent paintings, the Reading Rilke series, have been inspired by the writings and poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke and the atmosphere which is the Pacific Northwest. The references to landscape offer a means to wrestle with themes such as transformation, impermanence, the unknown and the unsaid. Working to modify an underlying state of complexity and to coax a simple beauty out of it all, my paintings seem minimalist at first glance but with time present a lushness and depth of color and a softness of edge that engages the viewer's imagination and conveys a sense of place through saturated layers of transparent glazes. Employing atmosphere and poetry to give my subjects their true value, my intention is to evoke the emotion, memory, and essence of my surroundings.
I studied fine art at Western Washington University and was a private art instructor for elementary age students.
