There was a fat girl in the back spitting eating and sweating on the food in the back I saw it with my eyes but I had The corn beef sandwitch was good though.

Dry wheat bread. Good for pond ducks, not for people.

"What's the pastrami like here?" "I don't know, I've not eaten anything here." When the cashier gives you that response, that's called a red flag. The best pastrami sandwiches in the country go for $20. That's what Shapiro's in the airport charges. Hence, my question. If you think your pastrami is worth $20, your cashier better be singing it's praises. Opted for the roast Turkey sandwich. A cafeteria-style offering on dry, wheat bread with discount Swiss cheese, that wasn't really Swiss cheese. $15. For a dry turkey sandwich. Shapiro's: reinforcing Indy airport's reputation as the worst airport food in the nation.

Stopped at Shapiro's this morning around 6am. Long line, but moved quick. Bagel was ready as we were ordering. Decided on a sausage, egg, & cheese bagel, only gave 4 stars because despite 2 signs listing they had mustard they told me they did not. This was super disappointing as the bagel was super dry. Trying to be positive and be grateful it wasn't super greasy either but some mustard or Mayo would have earned them another star. A bit pricey, about $10 but if I was in this gate again without anything open I would consider eating here again.

On my way home to avoid a snowstorm I stopped to grab some breakfast at Shapiro's. It was really busy but I had time before my flight so I waited. And waited. Not like me to wait but whatever. When I got waited on all I ordered as a buttered bagel and a water. $9.53 later I leave only to realize I didn't get a receipt. I walked back in to learn they couldn't give me one. I was promised they would email it to me but they didn't. The bagel was good. No complaints. They just didn't have enough help.

Tuna Salad on Rye

The tuna salad sandwich was actually delicious! The salad wasn't just tuna and mayo, there were also pieces of celery and relish in there (and it seemed like maybe egg?) that added some flavour and texture. I had it with 1000 Island dressing which was great, and thankfully they didn't slather the dressing on - just a light coating on the bread. Even though they loaded up the sandwich with filling, the slices of bread weren't huge, so $14 was pretty expensive for a simple deli sandwich, although obviously you expect to overpay at an airport. The cashier here was super nice and made my morning with how cheerful she was. I also appreciated that they broke out the tuna salad for me at 10:27 when lunch technically starts at 10:30. The line moved pretty quickly too.

Terrible corned beef at the airport location, tough and chewy. I wouldn't get it here again, the downtown location was much better.

Awful customer service. These early morning folks are only interested in each other and talking about partying the night before.

New York Gourmet Deli - Cold Italian sandwich!

New York Gourmet Deli

4.5(38 reviews)

The O.G.B.L.T. is the way to go. It's a hot and melty sandwich with turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato,…read morepepper jack cheese and mayo, all on a hoagie bun. The sandwich is about as long as my humerus, and I ate the whole dang thing in one sitting. New York Gourmet Deli is not to be confused with NY Gourmet Deli, also in Indy. New York Gourmet Deli is located on East 21st Street on the near east side; NY Gourmet Deli is on Ruckle Street, near The Children's Museum. Are they owned by the same people? I don't know, but someone needs to change their name so I'm less confused. Anyway, New York Gourmet Deli, on the east side, is great and located in an unassuming parking lot full of potholes. It looks like a liquor store from the outside, but step inside and you'll see the large deli counter where you order sandwiches, burgers, fries and other foods. The joint is also a convenience store, of sorts, with a wall full of refrigerated beverages, aisles of chips, candy, and lots of Mexican snacks. There's also a little corner of the store with goods like laundry detergent and other necessities. The hustle here is unmatched. The fellows behind the counter were flying all over the kitchen to fulfill the orders. I visited around noon on a weekday, which seemed to be a busy time because there were lots of people from all walks of life here, either waiting to order or waiting for their orders. The guys behind the counter were unflappable and took orders and made sandwiches at a speedy pace. Even if there's a line, you won't wait long for your food.

We knew they were going to have good sandwiches when we saw the boars head meat in the deli case…read more This is a carry out only spot. Service was very good with only a slight wait due to a small line. You order, they start making your order and you pay. A few minutes later the have everything ready and bagged up. I got a chopped cheese, it does reminded me of a sloppy Joe, and my only complaint was I wanted more lettuce and tomato. Richelle got the east coast roast beef and cheddar. She loved it and it had plenty of lettuce and tomato. Fries are good, and the give them a sprinkle of seasoning too. Plenty of cans of pop to choose, but would like to see a few diet pop options added. We will definitely come back, and I ask for plenty of toppings.

I've struggled with how to rate and review Goose the Market for a long time…read more I've struggled mightily. It's an Indianapolis icon in many ways. It's beloved. And listen, it's not the most wheelchair friendly place in the world. If you're a wheelchair user, you're in all likelihood not going to the cellar unless you're extraordinary with you're chair or you crawl. I remember attending a Yelp event here, and I just wrestled with these issues so much. It's not inaccessible - you can get in the door, though even the parking is a bit wonky and the curb-cuts a bit worn. This is an older building in an older neighborhood. So yeah, if you're a wheelchair user plan ahead. I am a wheelchair user. And I suppose I should knock off my usual 1-star for accessibility issues. But, I just can't do it. I, instead, choose to go 5-stars with my narrative disclaimer that there are accessibility issues here. But, my word. This is a great place and every single experience I've had with Goose the Market, including last night's Italian Film Festival, has been stellar whether I'm in their location or at an event they are catering. What is Goose the Market? First off, nearly everyone considers it one of the best - Indianapolis Monthly, Eater, Yelp, etc. Goose the Market offers a daily menu of sandwiches, soups, gelato, and small plates. It offers raw beef, pork, poultry, game, seafood, in-house made sausage/smoked meats, and more. It offers charcuterie - both in-house and from other producers. It offers farmstead cheeses, fresh produce, artisan breads, preserves, sauces, pickles, pasta, crackers, flours/grains, and a lot more. There's the cellar - Enoteca bar with Italian style wine by the glass and small plates (and it has all-ages seating). Goose the Market offers a wine of the month club, gift cards, catering, classes, daily specials, and more. What can I say? There are those places that are worth the effort. As a lifelong person with a disability, I long ago realized the world would never be perfectly accessible. It's never going to happen. I'll continue to work toward a more accessible world, though I'll also honor that there are those places where I feel welcome anyway. I feel welcome at Goose the Market, though I can't quite get the full experience. The service is exceptional, the products quite awesome, the environment warm and friendly, and there's simply no doubt it's one of Indy's treasures. So yeah, five stars. With a disclaimer that those with mobility impairments may need to plan ahead or have a companion along. Who wants to be my companion?

What a fun spot for a sandwich or cheese or sundry items!…read more It is on the corner of two busy streets but does have two spots in front for parking. You can also park in the gravel lot across the road. It was raining pretty heavily so we got wet but wasn't a far dash. The counter is like any deli with the items displayed in the cold case. You can browse the various freezers or shelves for items like picked veggies, canned fish or spreads. It was fun to see that you could buy everything needed for a picnic or impromptu lunch! We got sandwiches to go as well as locally baked cookies. I tried the recommendation for a vegetarian sandwich. It was nice and crusty and had some good flavor. I might create my own next time, but theirs was good and had lots of flavor! My friend was new to Indianapolis and really liked the options. She said she would be back and so will we. They also do tasting events and other things so we might check out one of their offerings. A fun local spot!
