I personally love the boxing and AC classes. They are challenging yet fun. They let us try different classes until we felt comfortable to join. The gym is very clean and the women's locker room is very spacious (not sure about the men's because I haven't been in there). I joined Shape almost 7 () years ago and I confidently say that it's one of the best investments I've made in my life. The energy, experience, and caliber of the trainers and programming is absolutely unmatched. If I have an injury, the trainers share their immense knowledge of how to modify, rehab, and strengthen myself to even better than I was before. When I'm at my peak, they push me beyond the limitations I set for myself. HUGE shoutout to Coach Delroy! I gained over 4 pounds of LEAN muscle after consistently going to his classes (1-2x/week)for about 6 months and have never felt stronger, even when I was lifting on my own 4-5x/week. In addition to having the best people, the facility, equipment, and technology are Pro-Athlete level. They have a Fit 3D scanner which allows you to track meaningful data related to your overall health. They think beyond the number on the scale and will guide you to be the most balanced and strong version of yourself. I had a fantastic experience with my personal trainer; however, 10 months into my 1 year contract the gym suddenly changed their mode of operation shifting from personal training to squad training (groups of 2-4). I did not pay for this, I do not want this and my options are to comply or pay additional fees for personal training They refuse to reimburse me for my remaining sessions. The coaches are great. The business side is completely unprofessional. There was no official rollout of this change, no time or options for those under contract who did not want to go the way of their new programming. It is unfortunate as the training side of things is great. If they could only get their act together on the financial end. read more

Since I am moving away I figured I needed to show some love to this gym that I've been going to for the past 8 months! I only signed up for 4 class credits a month so I could attend SHAPE on a weekly basis. It was also the cheapest option for me but SHAPE tends to have free boot camps around town on a monthly/bimonthly basis so I'm able to squeeze in free boot camps here and there. Follow on Facebook or Instagram for free classes/boot camps! As for the classes I feel that the trainers provide a wide variety of personalities and exercises that are effective (I'm always sore and sweating my butt off). Boxing with Sam or JB are great and classes such as the lift, the ATM or system with Jamie, Casey, Marty, and Danae will make you feel you're getting your $$$ worth. Going to a gym or going to a group fitness class can feel intimidating at first but from the moment I started going to SHAPE my worries were out the door and I was focused on trying to make myself stronger every class. You're not going to be singled out, the coaches help make adjustments in your form as needed and genuinely want you to do better. It's a clean facility (locker rooms are always nice, free hair ties for ladies if they need them) with top notch equipment and I hope in my new city I'm able to find a gym close to what they've provided me! read more

The team at SHAPE Training is phenomenal and the facility superseded expectation. Not being from the Pittsburgh area, I called around to a few local gym and was immediately invited in by the team for my first class. When I arrived they had my gloves at desk waiting and had all my paperwork prepped, really made the experience easy. As far as the workout, WOW. I'm an active athlete and well conditioned, and i found myself with my hands on my knees on more than one occasion. These guys put you through the ringer and pull the best out of you. If i was from the area I would become a member, but given the circumstance i'll happily pay per class. read more

I have been going to SHAPE Training for a few months now and my experience has been incredible! Working out in a gym setting was not a comfortable experience for me in the past - I found it incredibly intimidating. Although it can still be intimidating at times, the atmosphere is very welcoming and motivating. My coach - Candace - has been very helpful in encouraging me to push myself and coaching me on adjusting my form to prevent injury and help me get the most out of my workout. I feel that she has really tried to understand me as an athlete and understand where my limits are and what kind of motivation I need to keep pushing. I have always ended my sessions feeling proud of my effort and feeling good about the workout. The aspect of SHAPE Training that truly convinced me is how they look at the overall progress of their athletes. Rather than look at one specific number to determine the progress an individual has made, they look at several different factors. As someone who hasn't always had the best relationship with the numbers on a scale, being able to look at progress from multiple angles is very encouraging. Well, much of the changes and updates are now done at Shape - and the place is great! All the essentials you need for a good workout, be it cardio, weight, resistance, or group and personal trainer led paths to fitness are in place. They've done solid work in maximizing space, tearing down old walls and unused areas. I'm an earlier morning guy, and seldom have an issue with waiting for anything - a reflection of equipment quantity and the quality of the crowd. Good folks go here, and gym etiquette is reflected everywhere. It's clean, well maintained and obvious that the staff and owners have investment in making this a premier spot for fitness. It's good to work out at a place where it's as much friendly and fun as it is challenging. Get in SHAPE! read more

They teach you different fighter style every week and it's a pleasure. Everyone is so amiable and nice. They give you a hell of a workout while maintaining light and fun ambiance. Signed up for 13 week boot camp and having a blast! You'll never find a more knowledgeable and enthusiastic crew. Very well organized workouts, suspension, real rider spinning and boxing, plus DODGEBALL from time to time. I mean DODGEBALL !!! This gym is designed for people who want a change from their regular routines or otherwise boring rut that they have been stuck in (whether physically or mentally). I recently moved to Pittsburgh and was on the hunt for a really good gym. I came across Shape Training through Instagram and stalked them for weeks before deciding to finally try out one of their outdoor boot camp classes. From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed with open arms by every single coach that I encountered. Eventually, I decided to become a member of their classes because I fell in love with them. I've tried so many of their classes and I can tell you that they all give you an amazing workout. I particularly love the boxing classes, shout out to Coach Deon and The Lift/ATM by Coach Jeremy. After a few weeks, I realized I needed to add personal training to the mix in order dial in on my goals. Personal training has been absolutely amazing. I might be biased, but I think my trainer, Jeremy, is the best of the best. In just a few sessions in, I can tell that I'm getting stronger. Jeremy pushes me, challenges me, and believes in me. When life hits me hard and I feel like I can't make it through, he turns my days around. It's not just about exercise, it's about compassion and mental health. I'm a military wife so we move around to different states every couple of years, so I've tried out so many gyms in the past 12 years. I can say that hands down, Shape Training is the best in practically every category I can think of. It's just so unique. From the positive energy that radiates from all of the coaches and members to how intense and varied the classes are along with having top notch facilities and equipment. I walked in to SHAPE Training almost 3 years ago and never looked back. I do personal training with Casey and take their boxing and strength training classes. One of the best decisions I have ever made. I am stronger and feel better than I ever have. It has become an escape for me and I genuinely enjoy walking in every day. The coaches are supportive and skilled with each bringing their own style. They push you to go farther than you think you can and you walk out feeling better than when you walked in every time. I've belonged to several different gyms and tried countless classes over the years and SHAPE is the one that stuck. It's challenging and never boring. And the best part - I have met great people who have become close friends. I love Shape Training! All of the coaches are amazing. I think I have taken a class with almost every coach now. I moved to Pittsburgh from California, where I trained capoeira and ran, and I love the intensity of the classes here. Every class I take is an overall great workout, which is important for a busy lifestyle. You never want to go to a class that isn't a hard workout because then you feel like you still need to work out. I always leave Shape Training feeling amazing after a tough workout where the coaches push you to achieve your best fitness level. I'm going to start by saying this -- my one bad review is probably not going to make any difference whatsoever. But I really felt like I needed to put my story out there. To start with, one of the receptionists is very rude, and very incompetent. She does not know how to handle irritated or frustrated members. I was without a membership card for almost a month, and each time they expected me to stop and sign in, which is totally fine, and I respect that. But the management never did anything about my membership card, nor did they give me any updates. One of these days I was running late, and I just walked in without signing in, and the woman goes, "Hey! where do u think you are going without signing in? You cannot go in like that!" Mind you she has seen me very very regularly, and knows my problem with the membership card. Whatever. I was in a hurry so I gave her my name and ran up. She ran to her manager (also a trainer at shady side), to complain, who in turn told on me to my trainer. Guess what she comes and asks me? She goes, "What really happened there? Why did you not sign in? You could be a person with a gun and just come in and shoot everyone! You are required to sign in." And all this after taking almost 6 to 8 sessions with her. So it is not like they don't know me. Whatever. Oh and let's not forget abt the manager. He's a big strong guy, okay, and when I confronted him about the events that happened that day, he was in my face and yelling at me. Yep. Yelling. At a client. I felt so threatened. I really was scared. I tried to talk as calmly as I could, but with his body language, I was super scared. And that behavior, to me, was the last straw. I called up my previous trainer and said I want to terminate the contract. He said there is going to be some cancellation charges. I said fine, and asked him to send me a copy of the contract that I had signed in July of 2018 (yeah, they never gave me my copy of the SIGNED contract. never. not once. despite asking for it. no email, no letter, nothing). He did not respond back with the contract for almost two to three days, and then I get this in my email: "Thank you for your cooperation with following up on this. As per our conversation Friday May 3rd, **our cancellation fee is $150 plus whatever sessions you've used up until this point**. At a rate of 2 times per week which is 8 times a month, that would be 48 training sessions you've used in the 6 month period from July 2018 until January 2019. Since your return from India, you've trained 7 times. In total that is 55 training appointments since July 2018. So here is a summary, Training sessions since July 2018 to May 2019: 55 Price per USED training session: $8 Early Termination Fee: $150 There is no signature required to execute the cancellation." Do you see the red flags here? I had to pay extra money for sessions I had already used!!! And also, no need of any signature and paperwork to execute the cancellation! They'll just charge my account! So I was looking at like $600 to cancel my contract. I was originally told that the cancellation charges would be only $75 and I would be good to go. See the difference??? I asked them all of the Qs, and kept asking them to see the contract which I signed, which should have a cancellation clause. Nope. No sign of contract. Then I received another email, with reduced fees ($150 + $56). I did not respond. And then eventually, they send this: "In the interest of finally bringing this to a close we can move forward with a cancel fee of $75 on May 7th, 2019. At that point, we will eradicate all your information from our system, including name, address, phone number, email address, payment info and any other pertinent personal information. There will be no further billing after that. You are not required to come in at any point. Cancellation Fee: $75 on May 7th, 2019 You may use this as an official document highlighting the status and/or cancellation of your Training agreement with SHAPE." They came down from $600 to $75. And still no proof of contract. And they were like, "your cancellation fee is $75 ONLY TODAY. Make the payment RIGHT NOW!" I was more than happy to be done with them, and despite them "not wanting me to come in", I went in and gave them a cashier's check of exactly $75, took pictures of where and with whom I had left the check with, and walked away from them. FINALLY FREE. So, if you ask me, don't go there. Some of them in there are just thugs who threaten you, and treat you just like a money bag. No respect for you or your time. read more

Hi All. I sadly need to warn all about the billing practices at Shape. I agree the trainers are great (however turnover does happen) and the classes are all enjoyable however it is the gyms billing practices / communication to members that has caused me to write this review and rate them so poorly. There was a misunderstanding with the front desk in Turtle Creek where I felt all parties knew I was leaving the gym for health reasons. It seems that my account was placed on a four month hold (freeze) and I was not billed during that duration. I did not return to the gym nor was contacted when the gym began to charge me for my monthly fee after the four months without being contacting that they had reinstated my membership and began charging my credit card they retained on file.. the membership that I thought was cancelled. When attempting to resolve the issue with the gym directly, they were not supportive so unfortunately I have had to get my credit card company involved. I have been extreamly disappointed with how they have addressed the situation. I regret giving them my credit card information as they obviously save this information even when you feel you have ended your business relationship with the gym. UPDATE - I heard back from the gym owner who has told me I will be refunded the charges and that my credit card information has been deleted from their database. read more

Shape Training in East Pittsburgh is going downhill. The machines are never cleaned and the floors get moped once a week. The locker room may get cleaned once a week and the steam and sauna are rarely cleaned. The maintenance is very bad. It took them a week to fix the hot water. I would not recommend this gym unless you do not care how it is maintained and you just exercise and leave. There are other fitness centers in the area that you can go to and get the same type of workout. read more

Hands down, one of the best gyms in Pittsburgh. Not your typical "meat head" gym. Trainers are approachable and highly knowledgeable with 30+ years of experience in professional sports. They offer a wide menu of unique and challenging activities (e.g. boxing, TRX, binding, PT) that are available to individuals of ALL fitness levels. I have been trying to find a place to exercise in Pittsburgh which will motivate, push, energize and excite me for quite some time now. And I am very happy to announce, I have FINALLY found it at Shape Training! Since the first day I stepped foot in Shape Training, I knew I was where I needed to be. I initially began taking the boxing classes as that was what I was most interested in. I had so much fun, my husband joined. And now, we both enjoy the benefits together. The staff is top notch, the facility is clean and the environment is super positive. My husband and I now meet with James as our Personal Trainer on a weekly basis. He listens to our needs, concerns and goals while pushing us beyond what we thought was even possible. We are so happy with the new found energy we are experiencing and are always looking forward to when our next time at Shape will be. Our bodies are responding so well to our workouts and we love seeing first hand how our bodies are transforming. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet and work with a few of the SHAPE trainers in a corporate setting. They were incredible then, but now that they have branched out and bonded together to create SHAPE Training, they have created a fitness powerhouse. Each trainer brings varied experiences, and a great deal of knowledge to the floor - I truly believe they are the best in the 'burgh. The trainers are flexible, inspirational, and carefully plan each workout to meet the personalized needs of each individual. The environment is lighthearted, fun, friendly, and positive....and it doesn't matter if your fitness journey has just begin, or if you are at an advanced level. I take advantage of small group classes, personal training, and community building fitness charity events held at the Shape Training facility.
