Wow, what a spectacular place. My family members attend classes there and the kids are raving about how much fun it is and how they are learning so much. The family loves the character development and the amount of leadership that Sensei Joey gives the kids. It is well run and family orientated. I am so happy that they have discovered this jewel. read more

Im writing this review not about the classes themselves but about the behavior of parents and the response from the owner. Two weeks ago the parking lot was packed and one male in a truck felt a parking spot was taken from him and in response started charging his car at the other car, getting out to yell at the other driver, using his car to block the other driver in, and laying on the horn all while endagering families picking up their children from the preschool and other classes. After witnessing him get out of his car and walk his son into class here I reached out to the owner to let her know how parents were represnting their studio since they claim to teach anti-bully themes. Upon initially speaking to Lori I felt that they would handle the situation and at the very least send an email to parents of that class reminding them to watch how they behave. Lori had asked me to send her the picture of the male driver's car license but responded that they don't know the cars the parents drive and there wasn't anything they could do. Today that same driver began agressively trying to back into me and honk at me then began to film me from his car when I was parking. I attempted to talk to the Sensi who was between classes and was very dismissed. I attempted to call Lori again but got voicemail so I texted her a photo of the male so she would know which parent but was told she couldn't do anything. I attempted to let the business handle their parents but because there is nothing theg can do I feel it is important other potential parents be aware of the type of parents that attent these classes, behaviors that are being taught as okay, and the lack of care from the business. Not only are their children attending these classes and in thr parking lot with their agressive parent, their is a daycare full of small children at risk by this mans continued agressive behavior while behind a wheel. read more

We go here for karate classes and love it here! They teach great values and skills on top of karate skills and self defense. In addition, we just had our first birthday party here. It was amazing fun! Sensei Joey, Ethan and Aidan took care of pretty much everything with the exception of providing food. My son said that it was his most favorite day ever, and he is not one to easy impress! My children slept until 8 am the next day so that shows it was a success. If you are in need of a venue that provides supervision and all the activities you could possibly need to tire out your children so that the birthday kid is smiling straight for 2 hours, then look no further. read more

This a long review as I wanted to capture all the details for any parents considering the ninja camp for their child. Since we had a good experience with Shaolin Kempo at the birthday party that we had organized last year, we decided to try their ninja camp out this year even though there weren't enough reviews for the camp. However, it turned out to be a bad call. I will be using "they" as pronoun for the privacy of the minors. On the last day of camp at pickup time, one of the junior camp counsellors (a teenager, counsellor#1) came up to me to raise a complaint about a situation involving my child. Among minor things like pushing to get past the line, they accused my child of making an inappropriate gesture at another kid. I was shocked at such a serious allegation made against a 6 year old who had no idea about the gesture and who had never received any complaint/negative feedback from their school, preschool or any of the other 9 camps (a combination of sports, STEM, arts etc) they had attended so far. When I probed for more details, the other camp counsellor (counsellor#2) joined in as well and strongly denied the allegation saying they had not seen any such gesture. Upon hearing this, counsellor#1 apologized to me saying that another child had given the information to them and that they hadn't really seen it themselves. All this while, Sensei Joey (counsellor#3) was also in the facility and walked past us without choosing to say anything. I expressed my dissatisfaction to the 2 junior counsellors and left the facility right away. Later that day, I sent an email addressed to Lori (Program Director) to let her know about this appalling incident. I did not receive a response from her for the next 4+ days. I decided to give them another chance to make amends by sending a reminder email. Soon after I received a call from her saying she hadn't seen my previous email which I would take with a grain of salt given how promptly she had responded to my previous emails and queries. She gave the phone to Sensei Joey stating that he was the one present on site. I expected a whole hearted apology from him for the incident.  Instead, I got an elaborate explanation of how the junior counsellors interacted with children on a daily basis during their classes and that the camp had been run for many years. I brought up the fact that a martial arts class where kids follow instructors' moves is a very different setting from an open play based camp and the skills for that are not translatable to running a camp without proper training. When I specifically asked him if he had seen my child making the gesture as alleged by counsellor#1, he clearly said no just like counsellor#2. The part that enraged me was after that, when he said, "just because none of the camp counsellors saw it, it doesn't mean it did not happen". I couldn't believe I was speaking to a martial arts instructor. Making a serious allegation against a child based on what another child made up or incorrectly perceived, without any proof whatsoever and not owning up to his junior camp counsellor's mistake was absolutely appalling. The only thing he said to even remotely accept the issue is that he mentioned counselling camp counsellor#1 after the incident.  He ended the call saying "I am glad all this ended perfectly" which further emphasized that the establishment was more concerned about their public perception than trying to actually own up to their mistakes and address issues. After experiencing so many different camps, I can clearly say that this camp did not have even the basic policies and training in place to ensure the smooth functioning of a camp. Having the owner or a responsible and experienced adult in charge to deal with unexpected issues and to interact with parents in case of a problem along with training their staff on how to conduct a camp is not optional. While the incident was horrible by itself, I am more shocked at the way the owners tried to just let it pass and then tone it down instead of apologizing and owning responsibility. This experience has not only left me and my husband bitter but has scared our child as well. Of all places, I would expect a camp at a martial arts center to help build a child's confidence rather than diminish it. I would definitely not recommend this facility. read more

We celebrated our son's 5th birthday party at Shaolin Kempo Arts and it was an amazing experience for all kids and parents! The kids (ages ranging from 2 to 8) truly enjoyed all the different activities, with some of the highlights being the zipline, board breaking, and sword cake cutting. Sensei Joey, Charlize, and Alicia were so wonderful with the kids and really went above and beyond (no stress for the parents!). Sensei Joey has a gift of entertaining the kids while still making them follow the rules, and Sensei Charlize and Alicia were also very helpful with setup, cleanup, taking pictures of the cake ceremony and even serving the cake. My son loved his birthday and so did his siblings, friends and parents. Having your party here is worth every penny and will leave you with great memories. Thank you! read more

We had our son's 6th birthday party this past weekend and it was such an awesome time! They truly made our birthday boy feel highlighted and special on this day. We really enjoyed how there are so many different activities for the kids to participate in and how they break them up into groups so the kids don't wait too long in line and they all get to have multiple turns. All the kids get to work on different skills and truly have such a blast! The cutting cake experience was definitely one of our son's favorite highlights from the party along with getting to break his birthday board! We could not recommend this place enough, especially if you are wanting to do an awesome memorable birthday party! read more

My five year old fell asleep the night of his birthday party in an exhausted daze asking, "Mama, why was my birthday party so great?" I was hesitant to book an organized party for my five year old. It was honestly more expensive than I was planning on spending on it and I didn't really know what to expect. My son isn't even all that into ninjas specifically. My husband pushed for it and clearly has better instincts than I. I am SO glad we booked this event! My son and all of his friends were beyond excited to engage in all the obstacle courses. The adults had a blast playing dodgeball against a hoard of their tiny munchkin ninjas, and they all got to take home an exhausted kiddo for a guaranteed nap. The instructors were engaging and were great at motivating the party goers. My son will never forget breaking the board and cutting his cake with a huge sword. We were also so impressed how special they made our son feel as a leader and birthday boy while still letting the other kids shine and enjoy the day. It was safe, fun, organized, and worth every penny. The only thing we would have done differently is order the headbands ahead of time since they need to be pre-ordered. Highly recommend! read more

My son had his seventh birthday party at Shaolin Kempo Arts and it was a blast! All the kids (range from 4 to 10) had an action packed two hour fun with lots of different activities. My son's favorite parts are the board breaking, sword cake cutting, and the zipline! Sensei Joey, Charlize, and Aiden made the birthday party super fun and friendly. Charlize is also very helpful with setting up / cleaning up the party and taking pictures for the cake cutting. My son said it's his best birthday party ever, and every kid enjoyed it! My 14 year old trains with Sensei Joey regularly. Sensei Joey has specifically contributed to his self-confidence, athleticism, and focus. Sensei is a natural teacher. Unbelievable experience hosting my son's 9 year old birthday party here. Right from the planning stage to the day of, everything was exceptional. The staff were friendly and kept 20 kids fully engaged and occupied for 2 hours straight, with comments after the party from the kids and parents saying that was a 10 out of 10, and one of the best parties to date. My youngest (a 5 year old) loved it so much he wants his party there as well. I highly recommend Shaolin Kempo Arts read more

Where to start...the Lorocque family pour their hearts and souls into this Dojo - and our community's kids and families - every single day. From flawless management by Lori to Sensei Joey's patience, guidance and expertise to their incredible twin boys (Ethan and Aidan)'s involvement...we are lucky to have stumbled upon Shaolin Kempo Arts. Ninja Camp over school breaks in their airconditioned Dojo are pure bliss for all - the kids learn to use nanchucks, trade Pokemon cards, play dodgeball and clamber over obstacle courses, do arts and have so much fun! And then, for the rest of the year, kids learn to master the art of Kempo Karate, self-defense and what it means to be a good citizen. Highly recommend Shaolin Kempo Arts for anyone considering martial arts for their kids (or themselves!). read more

I have girly girls with interests in dance and theater until one of their friends checked out and liked the Shaolin Kempo arts. We had a couple try out classes and they were hooked. It's been 6 months and they are now proud yellow belts. One of my girls commented that she wishes she was coming three times per week (they go twice). They are also part of a leadership class that's 15 min before each class. They have goals they are working towards and learn discipline. Self defense is a big part too. I can tell that the class helped with their overall confidence. Oh and another added benefit, you become a part of Shaolin and Lori and Sensei's community. The kids performed at a Padres game in the summer. Lori and Sensei Joey organized picnics for the families where everyone is welcome to a class on the beach and after, potluck and volleyball. We feel truly fortunate to have found this wonderful community that teaches these extremely important lifelong skills and empowers my girls. read more

Hands down - amazing!!!! My twin boys have been going here since May. They have made incredible strides with their confidence, gross motor skills and listening since starting. Very family friendly. We started once a week and after a few months began going 3 times a week. They also have great camps for kiddos starting at 3 years old and a Parkour class for 5 years and up!!! Check out Carmel Valley Parkour. Try it once and you will be hooked! The kids smile says it all. Sensei Joey and Lori have amazing patience. I recently introduced the place to a few of my friends. Their kids are now in class with my boys. Should note my kids are autistic and are mixed with typical peers. Great for socialization!!! read more

Sensei Joey, Lori and Ethan and Aidan manage Shaolin Kempo Arts as an extension of their family, offering martial arts, parkour, leadership training, self defense, birthday parties and more. They teach skills while simultaneously focusing on the whole person and individual needs. Each one of them invests their heart, soul and expertise into the business in a unique way. They keep a spotless and clean environment. Continual development and pivoting ensures meeting the needs of our community. My 3 kids have all been involved at Shaolin, as a student and as employees. I took a women's self defense class in March right before the pandemic/quarantine started. It was the perfect time bc as a result of gyms closing, I had to walk/run outside a lot, sometimes in empty trails when it's dark. The class and training I received was truly life-changing!!! It was not a boring lecture-y class, it was very hands-on, teach-by-doing type of class. You learn by doing and by being corrected, you learn by revisiting some moves and combining them with new moves. You develop muscle memory that you never thought of. It's a personal tailored experience. Most importantly, you learn how to use your voice and how to display a strong energy through your stance and walk. I felt powerful right away, during the class and right after. You will feel invincible because what you're learning in this class are skills that will save your life, truly. These are skills that you can't unlearn and will always be there to serve you when needed. I think every woman should take this class! read more

Shaolin Kempo Arts recently hosted a Galentines event for the local community of women. We merged 4 women owned businesses under their roof to celebrate friendship and entrepreneurship. Additionally, the studio was clean and well organized. read more

We are sending our kids to Shaolin Kempo Arts, a fantastic place to learn martial arts while having fun. Mr. Joey Laroque is a fantastic instructor. He develops trust and confidence in both beginners and experienced students within the first lesson, and is able to teach both segregated by experience level classes and mixed classes. The studio is great, well equipped and fantastically run by Lori. Open for all ages and ability levels, Joey and his great team of assistants guide newcomers into the world of martial arts and challenge experienced practitioners to improve. Classes are fun, a great workout, and students will always learn something new. They change the routine and games every time, always coming with new games, jumping, obstacles, parkour, ball games to develop new skills and make the students great Karate warriors. Serious and joyful atmosphere, a great combination to learn martial arts. We definitely recommend Shaolin Kempo Arts!!! read more

Awesome team, the classes are great and the dojo very equipped and well maintained!

This is the birthday party my kids want to keep doing year over year...And actually - that's what we've done! Our first experience with Shaolin Kempo Arts was a couple of years ago when my older son turned 6, and this past weekend we became repeat customers when we celebrated my younger sons 5th birthday. The Shaolin Kempo Arts team puts together a full and complete program of jam packed, action-based FUN for the kids to enjoy - and even includes a "parent participation" activity that will leave you laughing and having as much fun as your kids! My son's friends (and their parents!) were raving about the experience. The kids enjoy a very different versions of an obstacle course, rope swing, padded mats to roll/jump/launch off of, a zip line, and the grand finale: a cake cutting ceremony with a samurai sword (note: get yourself a sheet cake and watch the Sensei karate chop the cake with the help of your child)! I highly recommend this for you child's next birthday party - you'll love watching the smiles and giggles from both kids and parents, and your son or daughter will be that kid with "the best birthday party ever" :-) read more

I can't believe that nobody has reviewed this place. I got a deal from Facebook for a kickboxing class here and so far I'm loving it (definitely plan to continue classes after my coupon sessions)! I've practiced martial arts in the past so I really like that the kickboxing classes are in a dojo taught by a fifth degree Black Belt in Shaolin Kempo (that's as legit as it gets). The classes are fun and have so much energy. The headmaster Joey is always so positive. He takes pride in what he does and his dojo which is well-maintained. They also have a dance studio that I've been dying to try. Definitely a great place to workout and check out for martial arts classes. read more

Our son had an AMAZING birthday here! Sensei Joey and his team kept all the kids occupied and entertained with all the fun activities. Kid/Parent dodgeball was hilarious! It was fun to watch the kids on the zipline ride and cutting the birthday cake with the Samurai sword was a definite highlight. Best part was that we didn't have to worry about any activities because the Shaolin Kempo Team had it all under control, and everything went smoothly... no stress! There was no crying or complaining at this party (just smiles, laughter, and exhausted kids) which was a true testament to it's success. Great team to work with (Thanks Lori)! Highly recommend! We'll have to try their classes next. read more
