Shakespeare at Winedale, a fabulous UT College of Liberal Arts English Department program established 35 years ago, brings Shakespeare to life every summer! Okay, not the real dude, but his rich and complicated plays are delivered live on stage in a converted 19th century barn. We enjoyed "The Tempest" last month in 100 degree weather performed by some incredibly talented UT students. For two months, the students live on the premise while studying and performing three plays to audiences from all over the country. Don't let anyone tell you that the barn is now air conditioned. Hah. There are two large floor fans that have been added but it is still sweltering and you will drip sweat. Wear your skimpiest, lightest clothes but do go and take all your friends and family. It is worth the drive, the heat and the dehydration and is one of my all-time favorite summer day trips. read more

I hated Shakespeare when I was in High School. It was boring, confusing, and the bane of my English Lit existence! As I...ahem, matured, I began to develop an appreciation for the works of the Bard. I've had the pleasure of seeing many a stage production of his many works. The troop of students at UT's Shakespeare at Winedale ranks near the top! Every Summer, the College of Liberal Arts at UT sponsors a program where students live onsite and study the works of Shakespeare extensively. It culminates with a series of public performances in a converted barn. As I glanced around the barn, I noticed that it seemed the audience was likely comprised mostly of UT alum. I then wondered to myself what the net worth of that room may be...unfortunately, I can't count that high. This year I was invited to watch a production of Hamlet. The setting is intimate. This year, because of the heat, the troop had decided to go without lights, acting only in natural light. It was like Shakespeare 'Unplugged"! The players were all incredible. They managed to convey the tragedy and wit of Hamlet flawlessly. The standout performances for me were Hamlet (Daniel Friedman), who played the Royal Dane with agility and incredible wit, Polonius (Jackson Pritchett) whose portrayal of the royal advisor was delivered with style and humor, and Ophelia (Mel Johnson), whose eeire performance as a daughter gone mad in mourning, gave me chills! The other players were all incredible as well. Each talented and engaging. If you are a fan of Shakespeare, this program will delight you. If you are not familiar with the works of the Bard, this program will quickly convert you. I look forward to venturing out to Round Top to immerse myself in some Shakespeare again... read more

Awful customer service! My mother purchased tickets for us to see a show here, however we were very ill on the night of the show. I tried to call to see if we could get tickets to another show or get a refund for my mom. After looking at the email confirmation, I realized the phone number wasn't correct. Also the number listed on the theater itself wasn't correct. There is no number to call for a box office. I finally went to the website for Shakespeare at winedale, the company putting on the show and found someone who I had to guess was the right person. There was no response. Two days and several messages later, I finally got a hold of someone who says that we are out of luck because we didn't call 24 hours in advance. Tough sh#*. No refund, no exchanged tickets. I did not buy the tickets, so I did not see the teeny tiny link to their ticket policy, nor did I go online to their website to the link that says "buy tickets" to see the tiny little paragraph at the very bottom that says you have to cancel 24 hours in advance. My mother is out $40 and we get zilch for it. I'm SURE she didn't mean to make a donation as my birthday gift, but they are going to keep it anyway. I see a lot of theater in this town, but I'll NEVER buy tickets here or recommend them to anyone! Enjoy my birthday present, SaW! read more

Shakespeare at Winedale is a University of Texas program dedicated to bringing Shakespeare to life through performance. Founded by Professor James B. Ayres on the belief that the best way to study Shakespeare's plays is to perform them, Shakespeare at Winedale offers a unique opportunity to explore these rich and complex texts through the creative act of play. Shakespeare at Winedale is a program of the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts, but many of its activities are centered on the Winedale Historical Center near Round Top, Texas, where for more than thirty-five years students and audiences have come to encounter Shakespeare's living art. Established in 1970 as a UT English course, Shakespeare at Winedale has grown into a year-round program reaching many different groups. Students in the summer program spend two months in the Texas countryside, studying and performing three plays in the converted nineteenth-century barn that is our theatre. A spring semester version of the course is offered on the UT campus, with performances at Winedale. Camp Shakespeare provides a two-week experience of learning and playing Shakespeare for 10-16 year-olds. Our Outreach program brings Shakespeare into the classrooms of elementary school students throughout central Texas, and brings those students to Winedale to perform. Our program also includes a medieval nativity play performed by children from the Winedale area, a summer course for teachers through the UTeach program, visits by British Shakespeareans to the Winedale theatre barn, and special performances in other venues, including an annual tour to England.
