The Seward Mariners Memorial is a distinct lighthouse structure that is located in the small boat harbor area. It was erected to honor the memory of Seward mariners who have lost their lives at sea or contributed to our local seafaring history and maritime history. I love historical monuments such as this and a short side walk will be well worth your time. The interior views inside the memorial are interesting and sobering, and are well accented by the stunning exterior water/mountain views from the plaza. read more

I found this monument while walking around Seward. It's next to the Alaska SeaLife Center. There a…read morestatue of a musher and a dog. There's also a sign explaining the origins of the Iditarod dog sled race and where they go. Incidentally there another statue of a musher with some sled dogs 200-300 feet east of here in the park parallel to the street. I thought this place was cool and worth checking out.

You can see blue color shining through from the high density of the ice. It takes around 400 years for snow from the top of the ice field to make it to the sea.

The downstairs museum is a must stop for first time visitors to Seward and gets you immediately up to speed with the history and pivotal events and figures who helped to shape what this town has become. There are a few onsite movies you can watch and also a community center downstairs that was well in use by a gaggle of children when we dropped in on a Saturday. If you're wandering around town in the cold and possibly in need of a public restroom, this is a warm haven you'll appreciate! Upstairs features internet stations, charging stations for mobile devices, and private booths for taking calls (SUPER useful if you're working remotely or while you travel). The book selection is well maintained and ample enough to likely have something you're interested in picking up.
