You should really try a different fruit juice every time you go to Big Bi! They have many of the local fruits, like the maracuja (relative to passion fruit). On the negative side, burgers do not come with fries. Very few juice bars will have fries for the same price or will offer fries for this price and charge less with no fries. I would walk around and compare. SOME ADVICE (for Big Bi and other juice bars in Rio): [ ] Read the menu that I posted in the pictures BEFORE traveling to Rio. I did not do this and it was frustrating to order and most of the time it was a guess. Pastry names would be ideal. Employees at Big Bi and other juice bars spoke little Spanish or English and knowing what you are ordering before traveling to Rio will make your like and their life a whole lot easier! [ ] Use credit card. Most USA banks have a 3% foreign fee per transaction. So you only loose 3 cents per dollar vs. the average 20 cents that are lost when exchanging money. I used my credit card wherever offered (~50% of businesses accepted Visa) and saved a lot compared to my friends. [ ] Based on the prices at Big Bi, budget how much you will spend on outside food. Keep in mind that corner juice bars are probably the most affordable meals in Rio so this is a minimum. That's it! Hope you like this place as much as we did!

They can understand English but even if they don't they want you to shout your order to them in your best Portuguese. They know what you want even before you open your month. When my turn came up to order, I asked for a drink with strawberry and they said they only come in banana flavor. I was confused by that because I saw on the board they had strawberry (morango) as a flavor. But I went along with it since maybe they were out of strawberry? I got my banana drink and went outside with my friends, only to see that one of them got a strawberry drink! What the heck?! And unfortunately, my banana açaí drink was not the tastiest. I'm not sure if it was the açaí I didn't like, the banana flavor, or the mix of the two. It's also the fact that I didn't get what I wanted even though a friend got what I had clearly asked for just fine, and that left a bad taste in my mouth!

My favorite dish was the Tacaca, an intensely-flavored soup made with tucupi (a sour yellow sauce extracted from manioc), boiled tapioca starch (with a chewy jelly consistency), (very salty) dried shrimp, and jambu (an Amazonian herb that gave a numbing sensation, similar to Sichuan peppercorns). The counter includes bottles of lemon juice, Arabian pepper sauce, and molho de ajo(garlic sauce), or in my case, all three. Tips: practice your Portuguese. All of the workers are monolingual, but I was happy to push myself and get my orders right.( I did make one of the counter clerks laugh when I said não sei.) If you eat at the counter, you'll rub elbows with locals as they enjoy a quick lunch. Tip 2: no food photos. I didn't get a pic of our meal because I would have been the only person pulling out my phone.

Service is just OK, with the kids who work here looking more glazed than a torta de limão at all hours. I recommend walking 2-3 blocks northeast towards the lagoa instead where you will find some fairly nondescript lânchonetes and padarias that are cheaper and of better quality. After all, this is a chain next to a metro station! Keep expectations low. At least it's 24 hrs.
