Have you ever eaten something and knew you would never taste anything that delicious again? Well last night was that case for me. The food was beyond phenomenal. Every course seemed to out do the prior and every time I thought that would be impossible. I For the appetizer I had the endive stuff with blue cheese and blackened on top, the scallops for dinner and the cheesecake for dessert. This restaurant is incredible. We went here twice over the weekend while staying at a nearby hotel and both times it was superb (the first night we ate there, we loved it so much that we booked reservations to return two nights later). The food is absolutely delicious, each dish better than the last. We loved every single thing we had - flat bread, shrimp, carrots, falafel plate, lamb, duck and the sticky chocolate toffee cake. Back in May, my parents hosted our engagement dinner (small dinner for 22 people who all had an amazing evening!), and we honestly could not have had a better experience. I'm Persian, my fiance Armenian, so Serevan was the perfect gem nestled away in a beautiful town, for the joining of our families. All the servers were beyond attentive and accommodating - our eldest guests were in their 90s! Serge curated a customized menu for our evening that pleased everyone - mixing both cultures, cuisines, and tastes. It was perfect. You must go. I don't see what all the fuss is about. I've heard everyone rave about Seravan for years and decided to try it to see if it lived up to all the hype. At the end of the night I was disappointed for several reasons. Some of the food was mildly interesting (I enjoyed the meatballs and the labne), but most at our table weren't impressed: the spaetzle was bland, the rack of lamb was recommended to us as a good option for someone dairy free but they failed to mention that it's served with a yogurt sauce which when left off the plate leaves the entree a bit unexciting, and the meatballs, while flavorful, were tough, dry, and crusty. But looking back it was the service that made me not want to return. - My entree was left off the ticket, so after everyone's dinners arrived I was made to wait while the kitchen rushed to prepare my food. - We had an 8:30 reservation but the dining room began to empty out at 9 and the loudness and rush of the wait staff scurrying to prepare the tables for the next day (especially rustling of the paper tablecloths) made us feel uneasy and unwelcome to relax. - Despite a food allergy being specified to the waiter, one entree came out on a bed of allergy-laden sauce so the entree had to be re-plated. These are small things to pick apart, but small things add up to an experience. I'm afraid the experience was out of sync with what they charge you to prepare and serve you a meal. I've been dining as a weekender in the area for 10 years, and I've got many favorites I'll go back to. This is not one of them. read more

Stopped into Serevan on a weekday afternoon to look at the dining room, ambience and a menu to see if it might be a good fit for a family Thanksgiving dinner. As I entered, the owner brusquely told me they were closed. I explained I was not there for a meal but to make an inquiry. He repeated, WE ARE CLOSED". He could not have been ruder or more unpleasant. I nodded and left. I always thought it was called the hospitality business but in Serevan's case that would not be true. read more

Their Valentines menu was actually quite a bit more costly than the regular one (for the same food) which is very strange. Also, they absolutely do not care to come up with vegetarian dishes and serve inhumanely harvested foie gras. The food is incredible, the service warm and super friendly, and Serge, the owner and chef is a delightful human being who greets his guests with such warmth you feel like you were dining in his own home (which, I suppose, in a sense, you are!). The dishes change frequently and the only constant is the delicious combinations of flavours the chef and team manage to creatively pair. One of the best meals in recent memory. I've eaten here at least a dozen times in the past six years, so this review is based on experience over that length of time. While the food is generally interesting and well prepared, the service has only ranged between indifferent and incompetent. It seems as though the dining room staff is consistently inadequate (2, maybe 3 servers seem to have to cover all of the tables), and inexperienced. We have never had a server knowledgeable about the food, or about wine. We don't bother to ask anymore. Another strange feature of the place is that the chef makes rounds in the dining room, and doesn't seem to be aware of the inadequacies of the service (he hasn't done anything about it, at least). As he makes his dining room rounds, he goes to some tables and skips others; maybe he doesn't want to hear any criticism. As more options for fine dining appear in this area (No. 9, White Hart Inn, maybe others), I hope Serevan responds by getting its act together. read more

Outstanding service, outstanding drinks, outstanding food. Very gracious and generous chef. One of the highlights of the evening was a perfectly seared scallop on a bed of peas, fresh ramps and fiddleheads with mint. This was only one of the many highlights of the evening filled with creative, perfectly seasoned, and beautifully presented dishes. I would have to agree with Bret I. 100%. We went as a family to celebrate Fathers Day early with a reservation and were seated right away but things went downhill from there. After waiting for ever for our drinks a 2nd round was not an option nor was a refill of water. Yes we had our friendly greeting from the owner who seemed to have Restaurant ADD and was more concerned hob knobbing the NYC regulars. My first trip to Serevan was excellent the 2nd started to slide and the 3rd was it. My Hangar Steak meat was raw not cooked medium and in order to pay the check we had to take the bill to the bar as our waitress went "Poof" and disappeared... read more

A wonderful place with a wonderful chef owner. Very flavorful food, this is not your typical place and we are lucky to have it here near Millerton. We've been to this restaurant a number of times over the years. It used to be called Xe Sogni and it was very good. Re-opened as Serevan after an interval of a year or so, the standard of the cuisine is as good as before but the service leaves a lot to be desired. The restaurant falls apart when busy. Large groups mean other diners recaeive scant attention. They will take too many reservations and not allow enough time between seatings. On our most recent visit we were hustled towards the end of our meal as the next guests were arriving. Not a pleasant experience and not the kind of respectful service one expects from a resetaurant in this price range. read more

After the many times having passed Serevan while driving to and from the Salisbury School, my mom and I finally had the chance to experience this delightful restaurant. We arrived around 6pm on a Friday night and were seated right away (no reservations) near the fireplace...what a treat on a cold January night. After having our drink orders taken the waitress asked if we had been to the restaurant before, which we had not, and told us Serge would stop by to say hello. He came by a couple minutes later to welcome us to his place and chat...a very nice touch which made us quite at home! The food was delicious and very interesting, as I believe Serge's Armenian heritage played a big part in the menu creation. I had the diver scallops with brussel sprouts which were seared to perfection while my mom had the rack of lamb with herbed labne. The lamb really blew us away! It was juicy and flavorful...we couldn't stop soaking up the labne with our extra bread. Our meal ended in true perfection: warm rice pudding with rose water and figs....I swear this meal was heaven sent. And the coffee...it was strong and bold, a great start to our trip back home. Aside from our meal, Serge stopped to speak with me about culinary school for almost 20 minutes during a full dinner service. He is so passionate about what he does and was excited to share his experience with me. Thank you Serge and the team at Serevan...we will be back! read more

Here, you come can come and enjoy a cucumber or watermelon martini while you peruse the wine list and wait for a server to tell you the specials for the evening which is literally like having poetry recited to you. Serge searches local markets for the best produce, decorates the restaurant with heirloom tomatoes, pumpkins, herbs growing in small pots and whatever beautiful things he can find. But make no mistake - there is nothing small town about Serevan. read more

We went on a recommendation and this is a total find in the area. Amazing setting and food that cannot be beat in any major city. Interesting combinations and flavors, lots of fish choices. Many of the ingredients were locally sourced. The prices were a big higher than what we would spend for an average date night, but it was worth every penny. Very romantic. We had the falafel plate (some of the best we've ever had, and we are falafel snobs) to start. We had spare ribs and a pork chop special - both of which were amazing. For dessert, we split a flour-less chocolate cake with pistachio ice cream. The whole meal was amazing. We would definitely recommend it and we will definitely go back. read more

Serevan sits neatly on a little knoll on route 44 just outside of Amenia in a nicely refurbished old house with a large parking lot. We arrived just as they were opening for the evening. My initial feeling was a little uncomfortable, you know that look you get when you walk into a place and everyone turns to look at you as if to say......"hey, we've never seen you here before". But that quickly dissipated as we made our way to the bar and was greeted by the bartender, Barbara. The front room hosts a small bar and a handful of tables, there is another dining room in the back which I unfortunately didn't check out on this visit. We ordered our drinks, a glass of wine and the Serevan Martini which is made with a cucumber water that turns the drink an electric green color.....a beautiful elixir of the Gods. I was, unfortunately, on a restricted diet when I visited.....What the hell was I thinking! I went back-and-forth over that menu and tried to figure out the best possible option that would get me in the least amount of trouble but I finally caved a little and ordered the Falafel Plate. It was totally worth it! The falafels were perfect and all of the side accompaniments were delicious. My dining partner ordered the Oysters and the Soft Shell Crab, both were specials on the nightly menu and both were top notch. The chef/owner, Serge, came out after we had finished our meal and asked how everything was, which is always a nice/personal touch. He came across as a very friendly yet serious gentleman who is obviously in love with his profession; and that showed in the presentation and the excellence of the food as well. The ambience is country fine dining with a hint of Mediterranean influence. I will definitely be going back, but I'll make sure I am not on a restricted diet when I do! read more

This place is a treasure! There is something for everyone here. Vegetarian, steak, poultry, fish, cheese tart, and you can bet it's all good. Whether you stick with a tried and true dish or decide to go for something different for a change, you will be very very happy. Even with things I would never ordinarily order or like even I have to say it was delicious and cooked to perfection. I hope you fast throughout the day because the flow from appetizer to dinner and then dessert is truly an experience to be had. The courses complement each other. If you do not have the required room it's sufficient to enjoy any one course in and of itself and be full if you do it right. Have a few cocktails with your app. and call it a night. A glass of wine or beer along with your bread with dinner and you WILL be stuffed. Or simply come for dessert: I personally love their jasmine tea and rose water infused creme brulee but you can come up with your own combination. I tend to overindulge. I begin and end like a champ and I really must stop. But I make the exception for Seravan. Simple and quaint, country style house. Small garden in the back and outdoor seating if you love to be outside. Indoors is very charming. Bar is very welcoming and warm, feel like you can saddle up with no problem if you'd like a less formal evening. Main dining room is wonderfully simplististic yet still retains that rural accent. Bathrooms are lovely and the staff has always been sweet. Everything on the menu is worth a try. Everything is made with the intention of natural flavor being brought out. Another truly wonderful meal at Serge's "Persian meets Hudson Valley" farm to table- type restaurant. We had the White Salad- a nice fresh jicama cauliflower wonder, and the warm squid appetizer which was perfectly prepared and tender. For entrees my wife had the salmon which came prepared with ramps, unripened almonds (which turns out to be a nostalgic Middle Eastern treat), rhubarb, fiddleheads and asparagus. My entree was the trout, perfectly crispy with a wonderful humus and chickpea sauce. Dessert was baklava. The service is notable, always warm and inviting. I've had wonderful meals at some of America's top restaurants including Per Se, French Laundry, and La Bernadine, but have never enjoyed the personal attention from the chef like from Serge. He brought us some Chervil after clipping it from the backyard garden and explained the menu. Nice work! We'll be back. read more

Been meaning to try Serevan for a while and finally got there tonight. Outstanding. There is no other word to describe it. The staff & chef are super-friendly & attentive. Cucumber-flavored martini was exquisite! I'll be dreaming about the sea bass I had. Dessert was some kind of Armenian cake which name eludes me right now with Turkish coffee... Delicious. My wife and I recently had dinner at this spot, one long recommended to us but the opportunity only now arose. The chef/owner is very dedicated to making the meal and the evening as pleasant as possible. We experienced none of the service glitches others have noted but could discern some inexperience with the waitstaff when it came to understanding the basics of the wine list. The owner visits all the diners and you can hear him, sotto voce, giving encouraging and timely advice to his colleagues. The man attends to details! And that is true for the food as well. I can't remember when both courses served to me struck me as the best of their kind I'd ever eaten but that was absolutely true of the starter of Cape Cod steamers in a luscious both that included, improbably perhaps, small sausages and citrus. The flavors were glorious. For the main, I had the rack of lamb served Middle Eastern style on a rich puddle of labne and accompanied by basmati rice with dates, nuts and herbs. Rack of lamb is one of those default dishes served to large numbers at galas and weddings, so it rarely benefits from the kind of culinary bespoke attention that this one did. Plus, the fact that the supplier was a trusted New Zealand source (a rare departure from the otherwise strongly locovore nature of the restaurant's offerings) of the chef's guaranteed as did the grilling, the tenderest and most succulent results. Also sampled were the beet salad, fresh and well composed featured pistachio nuts and oil and the Iranian beef stew that offered a symphony of aroma/flavor where it was virtually impossible to pick out each separate ingredient but they worked beautifully. The few but tasty desserts covered the gamut from light to rich. As I can sense the owners search for perfection, and would not miss an opportunity to help him on his way, I offer a small non-cuisine related improvement. The tables are covered with large squares of butcher paper exactly the size of the tabletop. For gentlemen wearing jackets, admittedly an endangered species today, this paper was forever getting caught on one's sleeve as it went from plate to mouth or glass. I suggest doing away with the paper, making the pieces longer so they drape the tabletop, or clamp them somehow. So much for withering criticism--Serevan is absolutely worth the detour and deserves maximum praise. read more

I'm not one who usually writes reviews but I had yet another truly exceptional meal at Serevan and am moved to do so. My husband and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary and knew we wanted our special meal to be at Serevan. From the cozy atmosphere to the personal attention that chef and owner Serge bestows upon you, to the amazingly flavorful and elegant food, the whole experience left us in a giddy mood. I had the thinly sliced cauliflower salad appetizer with mint and cilantro, incredibly fresh. As my main course I had the chicken Bastille, a delicious combination of dark meat chicken and spices wrapped in a pasty shell that is unlike anything I've ever tasted. I heard so much about this place. The garden outside is its strongest feature, it all goes downhill for me once I walk in. The seating is cramped and the rooms are noisy, so noisy. First and LAST time to dine at Serevan. After finally trying the restaurant after driving by for years, we were disappointed at every turn. The food was just okay especially for the prices charged. Clams we're "slimey" with several broken in the bowl, certainly should not have been served. The Chef was by far the rudest and most unprofessional we have ever encountered. Barking at the employees in front of guests, which I guess he must think is impressive, just shows lack of leadership and NO understanding of what's expected when people go out to dine. This restaurant is a classy wonder... and very unusually veggie friendly. I came with a party of Four for DINNER and was wowed right away by the friendly atmosphere and setting. The food was even BETTER. We ordered 3 vegetarian appetizers and the Eggplant on Labne was OUTSTANDING. Everything Fresh and Super Tastey. The main courses were beautiful to look at and even better in the mouth. The BASTILLA was an unusual interpretation of a Moroccan favorite and a very good take on that classic. My wife and friends picked me up at the Wassaic train station and we drove the very short distance to Serevan in Amenia. It is located in a small, comfortable country house--as is fairly typical in these parts. The food was solid and my halibut entree was very good. One of my friends ordered the duck and loved it. Last night...Oh, boy...this time the place was not as noisy. I planned to have the beet salad & chicken entree when I arrived...plan changed. Sat in the bar area as last time it was too noisy in the back room. They were, also, understaffed last night but didn't seem to be a disadvantage to me, personally. The steamers clams (the special) were good....I post "good". $18.00. Had the beef stew special $30.00 (definitely a rip)...yikes...should have asked the price before ordering. The broth/soup, itself, was way too salty for my taste; I never add salt when I cook & leave that for whomever to add for themselves. Another patron told me, it was too salty, as well but not too bad...palatable. Another patron said the beef was tough. I found some pieces tender & some tough. Another patron said he likes salt so it was good to him. Rice was served on the side which I thought odd since there were potatoes in the stew...whatever. Creme brulee ($10.00) was ok but did NOT taste any "rose water" at ALL. I, too, use rose water to make desserts. The size of the ramekin was a small oval...I post the size 'cause I have had creme brulee at other restaurants that use the larger ramekins & they charge $8.00, Serevan's size (at other restaurants) are $5-$6. The good thing about the creme brulee was that there was a good contrast between the "custard" & the caramel "crust". I do not like when the caramel & custard are at the same level of sweetness...so I'm glad the custard was not too sweet. Had a glass of Lillet rouge; they were out of blanc. Had a glass of some kind of red wine, suggested by the bartender. The first one suggested, I did not like...at least, he permitted me to do a taste test. That's cool. Moved to the bar for dessert, espresso & "Irok"; tastes like anisette...used 1/2 (if even) of the Irok in my espresso, got up to speak to someone, went back to the bar & the rest of the Irok was gone....!!! I said to the bartender, "You took my anisette away...??!!" He said he thought it was empty, do you want more. I said, "No, I have a bit of a buzz & I have to drive." Charge of the Irok was $9.00, ya think, I might have been charged half since he threw out more than 1/2 of what I was served...??? But it was my decision not to have the other (more than) 1/2 serving given back to me. Don't get me wrong the food is good compared to other places but the prices are steep &, to me, not worth it. Got the bill...including tip of $18.00 (I do NOT tip on tax.), I paid $120.00. This time, I'm pretty sure I will not be back...maybe I will, just to get my Irok....SMH... read more
