The Sentient Bean is just alright. I think it gets a lot of it's popularity from it's location and target demographic. The food, for what it is, is pretty overpriced and limited as well. The interior is alright, though it gets better at night. (high ceilings that stand out a lot more when they turn their lights on) Additionally, visiting at night gives you a little more peace and quiet. The Bean in the day can be a bit of a circus, inside and out. As far as the coffee goes, it's alright. I've only been impressed with a few brews over the years and theirs didn't do anything to wow me. read more

What's most important for me to say about the Bean, beyond the good coffee, tea selection, and food (Mm! Don't miss the Greek panini!), is that it has a culture of its own. I don't mind my coffee houses just serving coffee, but what I need is a place where I can feel comfortable just working on my laptop or reading a book or showing up and an awesome event is going on. The Bean is probably the only coffee shop in the area that does everything from film screenings to poetry readings, and does it well. Spent some time here on Saturday afternoon when the rain ruined the walk I planned. Cute place! Love the location - on the back edge of Forsyth Park and right next door to a health food store. Good amount of seating, and several comfy chairs and couches. Plenty of places to plug in your electronics. WiFi was decently fast for a public location. People of all ages (from students to retired) were spending time, some playing card/board games but most of their computers. Felt very casual and I enjoyed my time. The music was current (a change from almost all the other places I visited in Savannah, which seem to be trying to keep the 90s alive) but not loud enough to overwhelm my earphones. I got hot chocolate that wasn't very sweet, and my partner got "lovely" hot tea served in a loose leaf, hand tied bag. Note: they do have a "If you sit, you must sip" policy. read more

I prefer to eat/drink at locally owned or "inde" establishments whenever possible. That is not to say I don't indulge in a Starbucks now and again, but especially when I'm traveling I prefer to enjoy the local flavor-- why travel 400mi to go to a Caribou Coffee? That being said, Sentient Bean is like THE inde coffee shop. I absolutely loved it there. I like iced/frozen coffees and their frozen mocha was delish. They are enviro friendly and have recycling bins. I did feel somewhat out of place because although I am a hippie at heart, I don't own hemp clothing or wear dreds. I was pleasantly surprised to see at least 2 parents teaching their children to play chess!! I sat outside on the patio, quiet, secluded... but the chairs and couches inside appeared clean and comfy! They charge extra for "to-go" cups (only like 20 or 25c). Bagels come with a LARGE wedge of cream cheese. and WIFi is available. It's very convenient if you are near Forsythe Park. Biggest drawback in my opinion, is the fact that they don't accept credit cards. read more

Loved the food here; the coffee was not so great. I got a Tofu Scramble and my girlfriend got a salad with many interesting items in it (Heart of Gold salad) and they were really both incredible. I got an iced Americano, which may have been the wrong thing to order there, because it tasted like water. And she got an Iced Chai and it just wasn't good (bland and spiceless). Moral of the story: either don't go there for drinks, or get drinks other than those. But absolutely get some food. The atmosphere is quite cool. Very "indie" place, and an interesting intersection of different lifestyles: small kids with their parents, businessmen, runners, art school kids, etc. I saw them all. This was a good find. Super quick service, friendly staff, and a comfortable atmosphere add up to a nice place to enjoy a drink. Their food looked good as well, but I was only stopping in for coffee. I had a mocha, one of the best I've had (not quite on par with Foxy Loxy, but WAY better than Gallery Espresso) and my wife had regular coffee, which had a nice smooth taste. One thing I thought was awesome: they use trophies as table markers. If you order food, you get a trophy instead of a number, and the staff finds your table by looking for the trophy. A REAL coffeehouse. WIFI, good coffee and GREAT location for out of towners. Parking is tough in Savannah but the public tennis courts are just across the way and at off-hours there are many spots (free) to park and walk around Forsyth Park which is gorgeous. Whenever I'm Savannah, this is my first stop! My favorite thing is the big cups you can order! The variety of organic teas is perfect for me, as I own a teahouse myself. I love the trophies for locating your table. This is my fourth time in Savannah andeating here. I ordered the bean chilie with a side of avo. My husband ordered two salads and side of avo. The soup was perfect for a cloudy day! We ordered tea of course and chilled there for awhile before walking back to our hotel. Savannah is amazing for walking, and we love to leave our car parked at the hotel and walk to all the little parks. We then go here for a nice meal and cup of tea. We haven't made it for the open mics but hopefully next time. This is definitely a place to visit while in Savannah. read more

Exactly what you'd expect. I walked here from my hotel easy enough, there are so many places to get breakfast/coffee in the area it's hard to choose! This was my first, I will be checking out others for the rest of my stay as I found it pretty underwhelming. They do have great vegan and vegetarian options and a good size space to sit inside as well as some outside tables. Staff wasn't very engaging and whenever I try a new place I like to have them talk to me! Tell me what makes you known and walk me through it! We came to savannah for a long weekend stay and this was our first place we went to the morning we got there. We were all highly annoyed and disappointed. The food was not good, the staff was so rude and sassy. We had a party of nine people and we stayed right around the corner and were happy we had a near by place to go to each morning before starting any of our activities but after being treated so rudely we refused to give them our business for the rest of the trip. Every other place we went to in Savannah had the most amazing customer service but this place was just horrible and flat out ignorant. Who knew asking for ketchup and directions to a gas station (which was literally a block away) would just be too hard for an employee to answer. read more

I came here looking for a place to get away from the heat and gnats that are at work in Forsyth park. They change their iced tea menu daily and the chalkboard sign says to ask what they have. Today they have apricot black and coconut rooibos. The apricot black tastes like potpourri air freshener. (The kind you hang from your car mirror)including a cardboard aftertaste. I'd say slightly less than averagely dirty for an independent coffee house. I'm not sure why coffeehouses in particular are dirty in the US. Restaurants aren't. Starbucks aren't. Decided to try this place since it's near where I'm staying. First thing is there service isn't very friendly which is points off in my book. Second, food is mediocre. You already know what you need to about this place. I just wanna bump up it's overall rating since I think the place is doing the best with coffee and culture possible. It's not too cheesy, you don't have to deal with awful open-mics all the time, and the food makes for the perfect breakfast or afternoon snack. Normally I can't wait to get out of a coffee shop and feel wildly uncomfortable as soon as I open a book, laptop or notebook, but the Sentient Bean allows me to chill out for as long as I need. Just a suggestion, but when you're tummy is full, the caffeine has hit your bloodstream, and you're ready to go home, stop by Brighter Day (the market next door) for some good treats to take home with you. At first glimpse Sentient Bean looks like your typical college town coffee shop. Worn in mismatched sofas, check. Quirky artwork on the walls, check. Fair trade coffee and a glass case containing baked goods, check again. Art students, down at the heel hipsters, and hippies milling about, check x3. The Bean distinguishes itself in several ways however. First off are the food offerings, which are far above what is offered at most coffee shops -- anywhere. Instead of the standard array of saran wrapped and slightly wilted sandwiches and baked goods, everything is freshly prepared, flavorful and nourishing. They always have a small selection of super-tasty, inexpensive and vegetarian soups and sandwiches, including some rotating options. I'm partial to the BBQ tofu wrap, which is served with Sriratcha vegenaise (!) and a bit of salad greens on the side. The Bean's baked goods, especially the cookies and scones, are outstanding, chock full of whole grains and delicious flavors and textures. They also have a great breakfast/brunch on the weekends, but come early, because the place is jammin' by 11am. The coffee itself is also very good. I almost always drink my coffee black and strong, the Bean does it better than anywhere else in town. Great loose tea selection too. Come summertime I always look forward to having their limeade, which is squeezed fresh right before your eyes, and is more tart than sweet with just the right amount of sugar. Regarding ambience, look closer and you'll actually see a wide range of folks hanging out beyond the hipster/college element- parents with strollers, neighborhood kids taking a break from their basketball game across the street, professorial types, people of all ages and colors. The Bean's reputation for excellent food and coffee, and its prime spot on the South edge of Forsyth park, draws everyone in. It's rare that you see such a mixed crowd gathered together anywhere in the historical area of Savannah. Come weekend nights, there is live music, poetry readings, and art events. The Wednesdays screenings of odd and rare films (courtesy of the Savannah Psychotronic Film Society) are especially great. All around, the Bean is just a very special place and Savannah would not be the same without it. read more

Two options for outside seating -- front: see and be seen -- back: off the beaten path and relaxing. Local art on the walls. When ordering food you are given a bowling trophy to take to your table so they can find you without yelling your name. Nice touch. This is the more granola coffee house choice in Savannah, as are many of the regulars. Lively and busy. Vegan options of course -- a few non-vegan options w/eggs. Bring cash (or pay to use ATM) as they don't do credit! Coffee is decent but not memorable.
