I booked a trip for our group with Senior Excursions called Trains Across The Mountains based on the original announcement, which was very impressive. I questioned how we would accomplish 12 attractions in 4 days. I was told "I will make it work and I can assure you we will get everything listed on the itinerary.". That NEVER happened. We saw 5 out of the original 12 Attractions. After venues were being deleted I was told "typically we stop the first night; coming home we drive straight through", which would have been about 15-16 hours if you add food and comfort stops. How could a company called SENIOR EXCURSIONS expect mobility and visually impaired people to get off and on a bus at night. They tweaked the schedule by replacing two train rides with one. I was told the Hobo/Winnipesaukee would not accept a charter for less than 100 people. I contacted that railroad ... after the fact, as I believed what I was told ... who stated minimum charter was 45. We had 45! How the fiasco played out: first of all, Easton Coach, who they contracted, advertised Wi-Fi on their Coach but it was not available. Older bus with no overhead coverings and non-working seat belts on several seats. Driver stated he was not given driving directions by the tour company.
DAY 1: Travel day to New Hampshire but changed to Comfort Inn in Latham
New York. Flyer stated 3 nights in Laconia New Hampshire area, which I was told had a health issue (bed bugs). Hotel had NO BAGGAGE HANDLING after I was told "all venues had been paid and luggage included". Four of our passengers had to unload luggage and take to rooms. Dinner at Ninety-Nine Restaurant & Pub was excellent! Ice cream at Guptill's was a very good replacement for Billings Farm on original itinerary.
DAY 2: Photo stop at Quechee Gorge was more like a NONEVENT as had to briskly walk to bridge for a picture. NEVER saw Quechee Village or Scenic Route 100. Next was Cog Railway replacing the original two railroads. BARELY made it but just did thanks to our driver Bill. Had 5 minutes to get 45 passengers, some with mobility issues, off bus and board train as could not change our scheduled time and no refund if we missed train. POOR PLANNING! Cog was an exciting experience. Very cold at top of mountain but we were prepared. Getting there definitely was NOT! Next stop Gilford Country Store for 45 minutes to shop. This was the ONLY shopping stop as two others were eliminated. POOR PLANNING AGAIN! T-Bones American Eatery was delicious! Depart for Fireside Inn & Suites in Gilford NH. AGAIN NO LUGGAGE HANDLING available and our fellows had to unload and deliver. This time hotel stated baggage handling was NOT INCLUDED!
DAY 3: Brief photo op at Franconia Notch...nowhere near the direction we were headed for Castle in Clouds which our itinerary showed we were scheduled for 9:30 am....Castle did not open until 10 am. VERY POOR PLANNING AGAIN by company that claimed they have done these trips before. Wright WW II Museum was very informative. Dinner at Taste of Italy 23 was very good. More bus time back to hotel in Latham NY. OF COURSE NO BAGGAGE HANDLING AGAIN! Senior Excursions called hotel that morning and told them about 4 people needed assistance with luggage. Seriously, when I was told it was included!
DAY 4: travel back to Pittsburgh with food and comfort stops....close to 11 hours.
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED as this was PROMISED to be an EXCELLENT TRIP even with changes. VERY, VERY POOR PLANNING by company claiming they have been in business 30+ years and have run this trip from Pittsburgh PA in the past.
CHECK INTO EVERYTHING IF YOU CHOOSE TO BOOK WITH SENIOR EXCURSIONS......Do not believe what you were promised! NEVER, NEVER will we travel with this tour company again and I NEVER would recommend them to anyone. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!
