This one, published by the Houston In-Town Chamber of Commerce,…read morehas an inner-loop focus, plus they host lots of networking events at area bars (even breakfast events - not at bars). The articles tend to be about local events and personalities, and the party photos are kept to a minimum (two big pluses). I actually find this magazine somewhat useful in determining good contacts/events for the central area of Houston. Another plus - no nasty cosmetic surgery ads!

I am not a fan of this magazine, primarily because it does not appeal to me, but they insist on…read moresending it to me anyway and will not stop despite my requests. They used to be delivered via white fans, which would enter private subdivisions with signs prohibiting soliciting, handbills, etc., and then simply throw their magazines onto our lawns. This was highly agitating, and I'm glad they have stopped doing that. However, their solution now is to use carrier route saturation to have USPS simply put them in everyone's mailboxes. Again, it's better than my lawn, but still poses the problem that I don't want it, and am being told I don't have a choice. No, it's not too much trouble to throw away, but simply another thing I have to pick up and deal with. And it does take up space in my rather small mailbox and sometimes causes other mail pieces to fling out when I open the door. That said, its leadership team is friendly enough in response to my requests, but simply unwilling to help.

Yes people complain about their ads, but their ads are of restaurants that I actually enjoy. Their articles are usually the most ground breaking as far as trendy things to do. What Cosmo is to New Yorkers, this is to Texans. This is where we get our latest fashion tips on how to properly display our handguns. This magazine is full of ads, but pay attention to those ads- they're often the fanciest and up and comers of the Texas scene. Don't expect to see people California-ing your Texas up in here. The articles sometimes slant towards the scandalous, and they do some in-depth, hard hitting reporting about things going on in the Lone Star State. The most popular editions are always the Bum Steer Awards, where they call out Texans who have either been done wrong, or are doing wrong. Generally, you don't what to get that call that you've been nominated. Then, there's the BBQ list. This coveted list is often quoted, and if your BBQ joint has made this list, then you've made it. This is THE authority on Texas BBQ. Don't listen to the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal's list. What do they know about mesquite smoked brisket? I always enjoy the pieces that're written by Kinky Friedman. He's such a delightful author.

As I've watched many of my favorite magazines wilt over the years, Texas Monthly keeps to its high standards and if anything gets even better. Great listings to goings-on around the state, fascinating and unique feature articles. Some of the best writing anywhere, and it's all focused on the Lone Star State. And the guides are a great reference. I've kept their Best BBQ issue in my trunk (and replace it when the new one comes out) so I can find the best BBQ joint in whatever tiny town I find myself in.

Some reviews of restaurants and nightlife as well, and I think I saw an article tucked in somewhere. A strong Gen Y focus. Published by Modern Luxury magazines, which only publishes for a handful of cities...consider us...lucky?

The magazine resembles W Magazine but is regional to cities like LA, Chicago, Atlanta, Honolulu, Dallas, etc. You can find great reviews for restaurants, new boutique openings, national and local adverts. Their target demographic of readers mostly consist of yuppies. The magazine is found at high end restaurants and retail shops. It's the go-to read for Houston.
