Ok, so you sometimes leave Self Service feeling as if you've been robbed blind because those tulips that seemed like such a fabulous bargain are in fact incapable of standing up straight in a vase when out of their wrapper. But for the cash-strapped flower loving gal, Self Service is a bit of a Northcote destination.
A greengrocer slash florist doing a fine line in slightly over the hill incarnations of both, Self Service sells a wide variety of flowers in a variety of states of disrepair. Let me explain. Closer to the front of the shop is where fresh, premium flowers are displayed but don't let this fool you. Progress further towards the back of Self Service and the flowers will get cheaper - and commensurately tattier - as you go.
There's the occasional bargain to be had here - I particularly like Self Service's cheerful bunches of gerberas at $6 a pop - but do check your purchases well before leaving. There's nothing worse than getting your bouquet home to discover it only works lying down. read more
