Visiting my daughter in Oregon, we decided to stop in while traveling through Corvallis. At first glance in the window, it looked like it would be clothing for more my age, not her, shes 30. We popped in anyway and boy are we glad we did!! She scored so many great items and I even found a blouse that I didn't know I was looking for! The staff was helpful and very friendly. I just popped in with my sister and niece, bought a pair of sunglasses, paid cash and walked out. Once I got outside, both lenses (glass lenses) had chips in them. I went back within 2 minutes of the purchase and asked for a refund. The girl said no. I must pick another pair. But I don't like any other pairs I said. She said sorry but no refunds. I had a very bad experience at Second Glance. Before going in there last week, I didn't know how consignment worked, and no one told me anything other than to "read the contract". I made sure to make them promise that they wouldn't put anything up for sale without first calling to let me know when they had appraised the items so that I could agree to sell it with them, considering I only get 40% of the value they sell it for. I hadn't heard from them as to what they priced my clothes at, so I called the other day and they said that they had already distributed my clothes between their stores, and they were up for sale. I was furious. I felt like they went behind my back, and since I don't know how much they were pricing it for (and they told me some story as to how they didn't know and would have to mail it to me), so I told them to pull all my items and I would pick them up. Then, when I went just in the last hour to go pick up my clothes, a lady with a condescending, judgmental attitude asked me why I was so cautious and made a motion for me to look her in the eye when I was talking to her. I now feel like I'm being interrogated and extremely insulted. What is it to her? They're MY clothes, among which is a very nice Guess coat that I don't want to be screwed out of money for. I told her my issues, and they made no attempt at an apology, and just told me that I should be more freaked out about Halloween tomorrow than her store, which she has had for 30 years. I can't believe how I was treated. I am so livid, and would never recommend anyone to do business with these people if they want to be respected. When someone is uncomfortable, you should do your best to put their fears at bay, NOT make them feel like they're the ones doing something wrong. They didn't go through with their promise to let me know what the prices were before they put them out, so it is THEIR mistake. I'll never set foot in their store again. read more

I've been a loyal customer of Nancy's for years and have watched her business grow from one to two shops. Just this evening I bought a cute white jacket. Let's face it - in this economy every penny counts and at Second Glance you can look good and save $ at the same time (my husband likes that). If you are not familiar with re-sale you might think that the clothes might worn or outdated but not so at second Glance! Nancy only takes clothing in good condition that is hot now. I love this store, but it is fairly expensive for a used clothes store. And really a lot of women are very sweet that work there but there is one employee that seems to help me EVERYtime I am there. And I think I may be giving her too much credit when I say she is 'helping me'. She is very rude and passive aggressive. And I try to be friendly to her, I ask her how is her day is (guess what--she never will ask you) generally she gives me no response which I don't understand because I am the only one in the store. I try to have small talk (basic conversation skills/manners) and some reason her computer or cell phone seems to be more important. She is the older blonde woman(older than the college students). If she is there either leave or be prepared to be inflicted with a bad mood. read more

This is probably an ok place to shop, but I will never consign with them again (or shop here again, for that matter). Years ago, Second Glance had a policy that if you consigned clothes with them, you had a window of time when you could come back and pick up the unsold clothes. If you didn't pick them up, they would be donated. I imagine many people never came to pick up their unsold clothes, so the owner decided to forgo that policy. Makes sense. This review is a long time coming - I first went to Second Glance with my mother when I was a little girl. I've bought many things there, and we consigned a number of items as well. The last time I consigned things was when I was a student at OSU, about five years ago. I left a review on "Now Towns" regarding this experience - not long after leaving it, it disappeared but not before I received an email in response from one woman saying she too had a similar experience (I received a total of two emails from people and have all the emails saved). So I am reviewing again here, where hopefully it will reach a larger audience. It's an ordeal that still makes me bristle to think about, and which I remember with clarity. I took in some clothes to consign. Since there were some nice pieces of clothing (a new Bebe shirt; a Ralph Lauren top with $50 price tag still attached), I asked if it would be possible to pick up my unsold clothes rather than have them automatically donated. I was told I could come in on such-and-such date and search the racks myself, but that they would not go through and separate out the clothes for me. This was fine with me. I returned on the given date, and according to the printout I was given, seven items did not sell. I perused the racks and was able to find four of the unsold items on the racks. Three were still missing. I asked a sales girl for help and she looked through the racks with me, to no avail. Strangely, the three clothing items that did not sell were the three nicest I brought in - the aforementioned new Bebe shirt (this was in '06, when Bebe was still hot stuff); the new-with-tags Ralph Lauren blouse; and another name brand top. I asked the salesgirl what could have happened to them. She shrugged and referenced the contract all consignees are required to sign, which states that Second Glance is not responsible for lost or stolen items. In other words, her attitude was "Too bad. Not my problem." So...of the three most expensive items of clothing I bought in, zero of them sold, and all three went "missing," meaning a) I received no money for them, b) they were no longer in the store, but c) had no been donated? Interesting.... My mother stopped by the store several days later and spoke with Nancy to see if my missing clothing items had reappeared, but she had no luck. I find it hard to believe that either a) they just "lose" a large percentage of consigned clothing, thus not having to pay the consignee, or b) their theft rate is really that high and limited to only the most expensive items. I gave up pursuing this, as I figured I signed a contract acknowledging that Second Glance was not responsible for lost/stolen items and, thus, had no recourse. It is worth mentioning that I spoke with a lawyer friend not long after who said that a contract like that is not all-binding and does not excuse them from dishonest practices. If I could go back, I would have better researched my legal options, if not for getting my clothes back, then for the principle of the matter. I haven't been back since that day and never will again. I'd like to think that no one else has had a similar experience, but would like to add that if anyone has I would be more than willing to detail my story or sign a statement for any investigation or legal complaint. read more

Terrible experience. I brought my beautiful, dry cleaned $220 prom dress from Nordstrom (worn only once) here. I only received $20 when it sold. If I would have known I would only get that much money, I would have kept the dress. I definitely feel cheated here. My bad I guess for not clarifying what price they'd be sold for. I have been shopping at the Second Glance for a few years now, and have also recently started consigning. Shopping there is a pleasurable experience, the girls working there are friendly and helpful and the shop has a calm, relaxing atmosphere. They usually have a good selection of clothing, although in the larger sizes of pants and dresses (10s and higher) the pickings can be rather slim. They generally have nice accessories, although there isn't always much to choose from. I am disappointed that the Annex does not carry athletic wear; in my opinion, it would be profitable for them and a nice option for the shoppers. The prices can also be a little higher than they should be. Like I mentioned, I also consign at the Second Glance. So far, I have made a little under thirty dollars. It doesn't seem like much, but it was for a small amount of items. They pay you 40% of the selling price, which to me is a good deal. If your clothes don't sell, they donate them to charity, which I think is really great. I was just at the Annex today, and a dress I am consigning was in the window. Great to see! DON'T EVER CONSIGN WITH ANY OF THE SECOND GLANCE SHOPS!!!! I have know many people, most recently my sister, who have taken very nice, expensive, brand name clothing items in to put on consignment. My sister just recently took in 3 bags of clothing and accessories and when she went back to see how many items had been sold Second Glance gave her $20. It's disgusting that they care more about their bottom line profit then helping out their consignees. If they continue to do this they will lose all of their business. You're better off consigning with the other second hand shops in Corvallis like Revolve, or selling your stuff online. read more

I had a similar experience to a few other reviewers I've seen, where I took in a bunch of items years ago, they only kept a few, which apparently didn't sell. I wanted to find out if they had sold, to get my money or the items back, but they said they didn't sell, so they donated them. I can't remember their exact policy or what happened exactly (it was over 10 years ago) but basically, they kept a few items, and I never got any money. If it was after 60 days, it was "sorry, we donated them." If before, well, you can look for them if you want them back - but good luck finding them. It left a bad taste, and feeling like I was cheated. Even though there's a "contract", so they can get away with it, I don't know how this is even possible. Of course the bad taste has lingered for all these years, and then seeing other reviewers with the same experience, I know this is part of their business model. I walk by the newer store sometimes, and if there's something cute in the window, it's hard to resist...but if I even mention it or them to someone that knows the story, they say don't go there, they're just a bunch of thieves, etc. And after thinking about it some more, and the other similar experiences...I don't know how this business model is even legal. Basically they get a bunch of free merchandise, that they don't have to pay for unless it sells (and even then, judging by my and others experience, that's questionable), and they don't even have to do anything really, just wait for people to come in with their merchandise. And if it doesn't sell, well they didn't pay for it anyway, so they're not out anything, and can just get rid of it and put out something else that someone has just brought in, that they didn't pay for. They basically have zero losses - and what other business does? Every other business has to buy what they sell, and if it doesn't sell, they have to lower the price until it does - and therefore, lose money. So by receiving a bunch of free merchandise that they don't even have to go out and get - and only have to pay for if it sells (sometimes) - it's basically all profit. No wonder they've been in business for decades, when many other business come and go. (Because they all have to pay for their merchandise, not knowing what will sell or not). So like I said, it doesn't even seem like this should be legal. But I guess that's a matter for government. I don't think, or know anyway, that this is the case with most people, or that they deliberately cheat their clients to save money - but if not, then I think it's another consequence of the f$@%&$ up business model. I imagine it would be a lot of work to keep track of everyone's items, contact them if they sell, pay them, and contact them to pick them up if they don't. That's why it's hard to tell if they actually screw you out of money or they just lose track. But either way, like I said - it's their crappy business model and policy that's to blame, which I don't think should be legal. I think they should have to pay, upfront, (either in cash or store credit), for any items they want to try to sell. Which would eliminate all these issues, and the work of having to keep track of people's items and contact the sellers. Because really, they only keep items that they think will sell anyway, and I'm sure most of them do...it even says on their website, items "must be a label we know we can sell" - so to not pay someone for their items, on the pretense that they don't know if it will sell or not, is crap. If they take your items, it's because they think they can sell them. And if they can't - well they should still have to pay for them. I'm sure most items sell, so if they have to lose money on some items - well that's business. It can't be all profit. Except for this store, apparently. I think they should have to pay for everything they accept, upfront - and if they did, I doubt they would be as profitable. Or maybe even in business. :o But, with all the students (and their moms) coming in and out of town, that come in to buy or sell a few items, and aren't around long enough to realize or even care that they've been swindled - well, I guess that's another key to their success. As others have said, it's also a bit overpriced. They have racks outside which I look at sometimes, but everything seems to be around $14 or more - even for American Eagle. Like I said, they have some nice things that are tempting even though they ripped me off, but at their prices I'm unlikely to buy anything anyway. Also notice how most of the positive reviewers are from buyers, not sellers. You're probably better off trying to sell your stuff online. Or just donating it to a thrift store. Because that's really what you're doing if you bring your things here - donating them, in the hope that maybe you'll get some money back. Which you probably won't. :/ read more

I have shopped at many nice consignment stores and I just feel like this store isn't up to snuff. The prices aren't all that great and sometimes there doesn't seem to be a good selection. I know they carry designer brands, but, some of their non-designer brands are priced a little too much. 7/12/12 My first and ONLY experience here - I brought in a brand new, expensive Max Azria dress and a couple of other items. Just like the previous reviewer commented, they "lost" the expensive item, or hadn't credited the sale to my account. If I hadn't had shown up within the 60 days and asked for it back, they could have just said they donated it. As it is they threw a little bit of cash at me to get me to relax, not anything near the value of the dress though. I feel like I was taken advantage of. To top it all off, the woman behind the counter was being condescending and completely unapologetic. This company either has a habit of "losing" top shelf items or they are a disorganized mess. Second Glance completely saved the day for me! The girls there are so sweet and helpful. I needed to put together an outfit for a party; they pulled tons of great items for me from around the store in no time. Their picks were honestly way better than mine! I found a gorgeous outfit, shoes and accessories in less than an hour. The most amazing part is the price!! I don't know how anyone could complain about their prices, especially when all the clothing is in excellent condition. I've shopped and consigned here several times, and there are pros and cons to this thrift store/consignment shop. The pros: They have a nice selection, the staff is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. The cons mostly have to do with consigning here. It's a different experience each time, so it's always feels like the "system" they use is just disorganized. For instance, sometimes you walk in with a bag of items, hand them over so staff can go through them, and they just get your account name and say "thanks." As if ... that's it. And then I might say something like, "Oh ... how will I know what you took? Can you go through the items now, so I can take back what you don't want ... or can you let me know when I can pick up what you don't want?" And sometimes that's met with a little hesitancy, as if *I'm* being odd. And the time they leave your sales items on the floor varies greatly from what they state in their contract. I once double-checked my balance with them, and they let me know my balance and that I had still had a few items on the sales floor. That was really unexpected, because I hadn't brought anything in for about six months, which is way longer than their contract states things will be for sale. Of course it's not necessarily a bad thing something gets longer on the sales floor, but it was another sign they're just not organized or consistent with the way they handle your consignments. Finally, since they have multiple locations, confusion has come up on more than one occasion when I've checked my balance. When you ask your balance in one location, for instance, they only tell you your balance for THAT location, not for Second Glance in general. So you have to make sure to ask that they separately look up your balance in each store to really know your balance. In short, I'll still shop here (and I'm so glad they have a men's store, which is great for the community), but I like consigning elsewhere better. read more
