I grew up in this church!!! Staff is nice, but some of the staff can be annoying at times. Communion Sunday is done by the pastor, and very spacious room for service. The church choir is very loud, and proud with their singing. Old hymns is often noted. They always welcome newbies in the morning, they do have Sunday school in which I don't attend (I never liked Sunday school). This is a real black church, and you will love it. Sometimes they have guest speakers, and famous pastors and gospel singers come. Also, church service does end late like 1pm or 3pm. So come prepared. All of my Houston family goes here, and its really fun. You will love this church!!!! Parking is tight, so come early. This church is located in the hood, but its not anything too scary. I am used to the hood, and the people are friendly too. When my mum used to take me, my sister, and brother here back in the 90's we always parked behind the church, always sat together, and after church we would always go and get some Churches fried chicken and go to my aunt's house to eat it. Those were the good ol'e times. Now back in Houston, I sometimes go here.

MY 1,000th YELP REVIEW goes to......... WHEELER AVENUE!!!…read more It feels only fitting that my 1,000 Yelp review honors a place that celebrates generations of leadership, families, and community. I had the privilege of attending Troop 242's Court of Honor at Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, where eight outstanding young men earned the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, bringing the historic troop's total to 229 Eagle Scouts. That is an achievement worth celebrating! I truly appreciated that the Court of Honor was held in the church's original sanctuary, which added a sense of history and tradition to such an important milestone. After the ceremony, everyone gathered in the event space across the parking lot to continue the celebration with family, friends, Scout leaders, and alumni's . It was wonderful catching up with members from my son's Eagle Scout class and seeing the lifelong bonds that Troop 242 continues to create. The ceremony was inspiring, filled with stories of their journeys (mainly not wanting to be a part of, or either didn't know what to expect) and appreciating their parents for giving them something they didn't know they needed, with so many life skills. From perseverance, leadership, and service to others. The reception was just as memorable. The decorative Eagle Scout-themed cookies were absolutely beautiful, almost too pretty to eat. The lunch was delicious, with both the seafood pasta and chicken pasta being the families favorites. Every detail reflected the care and prided that went into honoring these young men and their accomplishments. HISTORY FACT: 1974 is the year Scouting becomes fully racially integrated. Troop 242 is a historic Black Boy Scout troop in Houston with an extraordinary legacy of developing young leaders of character, service, and integrity; since 1967 founded by late great Rev. William A. Lawson (May 2024). Who started this troop so that Black Scouts would have a place in scouting, during an era in America where all other troops were for white scouts only. Congratulations to the newest Eagle Scouts, their families and the dedicated Scoutmasters, volunteers, and mentors who continue to invest in the next generation. Thank you, Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, for providing such a beautiful and welcoming setting for this unforgettable celebration. I couldn't think of a more meaningful event to commemorate my 1,000th Yelp review.

The temperature was comfortable inside during the services, the aesthetics were great, you could clearly hear the service and the music. The priest did a great job with the baptism immediately following the 1230pm service. I love the fact that their services were timely. They started immediately at 12:30. Parking was wonderful, across the street in the lot. Services started and ended on time which allowed people to get to their cars and on their way. They had crossing guard, which helped with traffic flow. What a great way to start the week.

I am sharing my personal experience with the LAMP Project and the individuals I dealt with, including Deborah (Debbie), Anne, Brandy, and Joseph. I am extremely disappointed with how my situation was handled. My personal belongings, including two pieces of luggage, still have not been returned to me. I am also deeply concerned about what I believe was a serious breach of my privacy involving the disclosure of confidential medical information to members of my family. I want others to be aware of my ppexperience and to carefully consider how their personal information and belongings will be handled. I have repeatedly tried to resolve this matter and have asked for my belongings to be returned to me, but I am still waiting for a resolution. I am posting this review because I feel that my concerns have not been adequately addressed, and I believe people deserve to know about my experience before deciding whether to trust this organization with their personal information and belongings.

Pros: - great looking building - love the coffee shop setup - alot of families and kids - love the sanctuary setup - the living room family areas in the sanctuary - seem to be involved in missions - pastor seemed very knowledged in the word - looks like they serve nearby shelter, and some unhoused. - looks like they are busy with activities. Cons: - no welcoming greeter when I entered. Felt really cold and distant. People greeted those they knew. - worship felt like i was sitting at a coffee bar listening to live music. People stood because what they were taught but no real engagement but from a few faithful. The sound could be a bit more clearer for the singers. - wanna present as a cool church, but it felt more like a neighborhood social club with middle class to wealthy families. Not mad at all the families, that's just what I saw. (To be fair the neighborhood is mostly middle class to wealthy, so that's expected. ) It seem to be a great church especially for families to get involved throughout the week, but the worship service itself is a no for me. It seem kinda surface level with no real engagement. I would need a great balance of meaningful worship/ word and the community which I think they have a great grasp on the community part.
