The folks here are always friendly. I don't shop there often but it is my go-to for last minute items I need (produce, recipe ingredients, wine etc) rather than trekking it back to a larger grocery store. The store is decent sized, clean and organized. Prices are higher than big grocery stores but that is expected of a convenience grocery store. I've been to this market a few times out of necessity/convenience and each time the woman at check out has added $15-20, essentially made up an inflated price, hoping I wouldn't notice. When Ive asked her to show the itemized list to me, she has pretended like she just made a mistake then adjusted the price down to what it should have been, only cause she'd been caught trying to swindle me. Incredibly disappointed that I was denied entrance with my service dog who had his service vest on and unobstructed and I had his badge and paperwork with me. Even after politely saying after I was stopped (which I technically don't have to) that he is a service dog, and I have his paperwork the clerk just kept shaking his head NO, telling me to leave. This is literally illegal: you can not deny access to someone due to their disability. I was following every protocol that we do when I go anywhere, through TSA, to restaurants etc. It's humiliating and downright illegal to discriminate like that. One thing I liked about searchlight is that they were open earlier (7:30 am) than a lot of the nearby stores that had produce. And the fact that the nice lady behind the counter helped me tie my bags better in preparation for the long trek back to the hotel. However the Produce was not on point. Bananas were soft. Grapes were bruised, some smashed, some had "fuzz" on them, strawberries were bruised some smashed. I walked a mile almost all uphill to get to this place and to get there to only have access to the subpar fruit was disappointing. The people here are very sweet and go out of their way to order unusual products that neighbors request. For example, someone requested a unique soft drink from Austria called Almdudler. Its like a European version of Sarsaparilla. There are other unique items by request from Korea to the UK, Pretty cool and manager Oscar does his research. I have come here pretty frequently since moving to SF. I will admit my first time in I did freak out over the high prices- but I have to remind myself these store owners are just as subject to high rent as the rest of us. They gotta make a profit too! For a corner market, I'm actually pretty impressed with their selection...down to the gluten free cookies! They really have everything one would need to make a pretty decent home cooked meal- produce, grains, bread, some packaged meat like sausage. Good quality stuff too! Not just ritz crackers, Campbell soup, and dusty condoms like a typical corner market lol. I read a lot of reviews about the bad attitude but I've personally never experienced it. I was working across the street and stopped in for a cold drink (hot today). Saw the sandwiches and figured why not. $6.29 for a premade sammie is steep but they still looked good at 1:30 PM. I live a block away from Searchlight Market. While it's wonderful to have such a great store so close by, it's the owner, and staff, that make the experience so quintessentially "neighborhood". Months ago, I bought some excellent, locally-sourced, kimchi there. The owner had just that day started to stock the brand, so was happy to see it selling. Now, if I stop in and she is there, she always brings up kimchi. This morning, there was no kimchi. A Monday, after all, and she apologized. And, asked me why, as an older "white" guy, I liked kimchi. An interesting conversation ensued. That's why I love local businesses, and will continue to support them. read more

One of the employees in this store brings new meaning to the word stupidity. While I think it is unkind to insult the less intelligent, it is fine to berate the unintelligent and rude. I was recently shopping in this store and I am forced to dock its only star. After ringing up approximately twenty five dollars in groceries, probably an apple and a box of cookies at this extortionist haunt, I noticed that I forgot to get milk. I quickly made my way to the back and grabbed a gallon of milk, when I was told by the idiot Searchlight that there was a ten dollar minimum for credit card transactions. I didn't want anything else, so I asked him to make an exception considering I had just made a purchase. He demurred and told me that he would have to ring my milk up for ten dollars, owing to their policy. I was not about to pay ten dollars for a carton of milk, so I again asked him to make an exception, considering that I am a frequent customer. Again, he refused. Angry, I told him to refund my groceries that I had just purchased and rering the entire transaction. He refused to do this and told me that he did not know how to do that. Really Searchlight? He was clearly not that idiotic and merely being a jerk, so I insisted. He told me that I would have to return the next day to return the groceries and speak to the owner. Heck no, I proclaimed. You can call the owner with dispatch. He called the owner, who told him to refund my groceries He was able to refund the transaction, which is odd considering he told me he didn't know how to. What a quick learner! I asked him to rering the transaction, I was hungry, and he looked at me with confusion. So much trouble to save five dollars and prove a point? While I will not detail the verbal exchange that took place between me and said idiot, I will say, that next time I will starve before shopping here. I now hike four blocks and over an enormous hill to get my convenient groceries to avoid patronizing this establishment. Is everyone who works in this store devoid of the capacity for independent thought? Dictatorship of the proletariat. I think not. Marx was a fool. Look at the fate of the Soviet Union. Just lucked into this shop while walking around the neighborhood & man - what a treat of a store! All kinds of basic groceries & this place is extremely well-stocked for being so small. I understand why small mom and pop shops have to mark up their prices but the prices here are absolutely outrageous relevant to similar stores. This is what I would like my corner store to be. After a million-calorie feast at Ghirardelli Square, what better way to work off the energy than to climb Russian Hill? Along the way, as we became a little thirsty, we stopped in at the Searchlight Market. It was clean, spacious, and well lit. The clerk was courteous. In the back they had real champagnes (Veuve Clicquot, Jouet Perrier, Moet Chandon the original), Brianna's salad dressings, Ceres fruit juices, coffee beans with a grinder, fresh vegetables, gummi bears, baguettes of bread, and much more. Looking over the prices, I found them to be comparable to any supermarket, so I don't know why some other reviewers had complaints about that. We were on Russian Hill, not the TL. If I lived here, I wouldn't bother to go down the hill to Safeway or Cala. This would be it. read more

After reading some of these reviews I can't help but write a review myself. For a small business (corner store) they have a great selection of basics. Remember this isn't suppose to be a super market - If you want low quality and a large variety go to Safeway. As for customer service, they're extremely nice and welcoming. Then again I do treat them with respect and kindness. If I can't find something I ask nicely and they are incredibly helpful. In fact, today I went in for tea and tissues because of a cold and the owner was caring enough to provide holistic suggestions on how to how to help a cold/sore throat. I can't say that I disagree about the prices....it is not cheap, but hear me out... I have lived in SF for a few years now, and have had my share of worthless corner stores. Some of my frequent complaints include 1) variable pricing, depending on their mood, 2) inability to go to said corner store and put together a dinner other than mac and cheese with mini sausages from a can, and 3) extreme attitude problems bordering on the psychotic. And here's the worst part: their prices are not that much better! You are still getting screwed to the tune of $2.50 for a hangover-curing Gatorade and $7.99 for a six pack. That's where Searchlight comes in. Again, it's more expensive, but what do you expect?? You are in Russian Hill in San Francisco and are walking 100 feet from your house to buy a six pack! If you want to pay BevMo prices, stop being lazy and go to BevMo. And I defy you to find a corner store in the city with a better selection. The place is clean, they are friendly, and they have things like fresh meat, and veggies that most sh*tholes don't have. Bottom line: you pay more, but at least you get more. However it's so expensive that the extra blocks might be worth it. My gatorade and can of soup came out to almost $8 the other day, which seemed near impossible to me.
