Located in the center of the Dorsoduro sestiere, Campo S Magherita is a crowd favorite especially among students from Venice's only two universities which flank both sides of the square. Because this square is away from the popular Rialto-San Marco route, you won't find many tourists so many shops here are catered for locals. Here, you will find cheap eats like the cheap takeaway Pizza al Volo (https://www.yelp.com/biz/pizza-al-volo-venezia?hrid=6EHlifDxdG7FjFQZoRQZwQ)! But even if you do not intend to eat here, take a detour here to people-watch. Here is perhaps where you can see the authentic Venice in working, and fortunately Campo S Magherita has uncharacteristically many benches for you to enjoy the scene. Ships were docked on either side of the canal, for a picturesque viewpoint. Even better: a quaint, lovely park was on the other side of the bridge! This park was the Campo San Pietro ("campo" roughly translates as "fields"). A rare open expanse of grass in Venice, beautifully lined with large shade trees throughout. Convenient benches beckoned to us, and as it was midafternoon, we plopped down and enjoyed a relaxing snack. This mid-September day was hot and humid, and the shady park bench was just the restorative we needed. A few locals were on the other benches, one stretched out and napping. Campo San Pietro abuts to the impressive Basilica San Pietro, which we took time to visit after relaxing in the park for a while. Should you desire a quick return to civilization, a vaporetto stop, Via Canale delle Navi S, is on the east side of this small island. If you're looking for a serene, cool and shady place for a picnic Campo San Pietro is a solid choice.

During the early development of Venice, Castello was one of the first districts to be inhabited, due to its proximity to navigable waterways. The district later became a hub for commerce and industry, where artisans' workshops, shipyards, and warehouses characterized the economic landscape. Unlike the crowded Grand Canal, Castello features less crowded waterways where visitors can unwind and enjoy historic palaces and resident houses peacefully, which we can recommend.

Ever since seeing that movie brand new in the theaters, I've always wanted to stand in the same spot. My ten year old son and I even got matching authentic WWII surplus satchels (the British MkVII from Magnoli if I remember right) so we could feel as authentic as possible. All of this buildup was fun but, in the end, it's a large plaza that a neat movie was shot in 30+ years ago. The church itself has been turned into some sort of DaVinci museum, which we decided to skip. Lots of food in the area (no, the outdoor cafe pictured in The Lost Crusade isn't real nor is the manhole covering Indy popped out of). It's still beautiful and it still made my own and a ten year old's dream come true.

One of these roads led us to the open seafood market, filled with the hustle and bustle of fishmongers selling their freshly caught and hauled in seafood. There are numerous stalls selling a vast variety of seafood of every kind! The ambiance is high energy and excitement. Mixed in with some locals buying seafood are wide-eyed tourists taking in the impressive selection of fish & shellfish that would delight any seafood lover. This made me want to return to Venice next time and stay in the heart of the city so I can buy some of the seafood to make a dinner or two during my stay. As I didn't buy anything, I can't say much about the service, but every fishmonger there seemed friendly from what I can see. This was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon in Venice and I can't wait to be a customer the next time I visit Venice.

Further, the guide didn't seem to care much about the quality of our experience. She literally said "this is a group of younger people, so we can do a chill tour" -- I took this to mean she would be informal, but it turned out to mean she put minimal effort into educating us about the city or the ensuring we were getting to see the sights. There were people in the tour more interested in taking pictures, but instead of making sure that we stayed on track the guide just sat in her kayak while they took selfies. It was fun to paddle around in a kayak, and doing so at sunset was absolutely beautiful. But overall, this "tour" is definitely not worth the price.

She had a friend with her--Andrea--who was also a local and SO NICE and KNOWLEDGEABLE! When I could not hear Anna, Andrea would relay the information back to me. As well as ask her in Italian really fast if I had any questions. She may become a guide as well so if you can somehow request either of these two girls you will get your full money's worth! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and will 100000% be back next time in Venice!
