Excellent for a fast food place. I forgot to take pics of our shrimp poorboys before we ate them. They were amazing and loaded with shrimp. The gumbo is good. I've never eaten gumbo with fish in it so it was a surprise but I liked it. I would definitely recommend this place and as all the other reviews say... don't judge the place by it being in a gas station! They have tons of amazing looking food. This is literally in a gas station convenience store. I read it on the reviews and I didn't believe it. There are bars on the windows and if you're a ditzy tourist like me, you may feel vaguely terrified. It's okay. There's delicious fried food inside. So, when you walk in, you see the regular register. Go past that one and go over to the display hung in the back of the store. Marvel at the sheer quantity of choices. It seems like pretty much everything is fried here, though they did advertise a crawfish boil or live crawfish when I went in. I ended up getting the 6 inch catfish po'boy and some hush puppies and I was pleasantly surprised. I don't usually like catfish and didn't expect to eat much, but this was seasoned perfectly on a baguette-style bun and I ended up eating most of it in the first 10 minutes. The hush puppies were also quite good. I'm glad I stopped by and if I'm ever in Meridian again, I may try the fried shrimp and the fried chicken because those also looked divine. Just a tip if you're in a hurry, bring cash. They take cards, but it's significantly faster to just pay with cash at the food counter, from what I could see. read more

Evidently management has changed since the last time I was at this place. The tip off should have been that there was only one customer before me at the window. Normally, there is a very long line just to place an order and the whole time that I was in there waiting (approximately 10-15 minutes) there was probably 5 customers to come in. I purchased a Catfish PoBoy on yesterday and was surprised that it looked nothing like it use to. What use to be filled with plenty of fish, lettuce,tomatoes, Mayo, and pickles (and a decent presentation) is now basically 2 pieces of fish and a leaf of lettuce and a slice of tomato on a large submarine bun. Seriously worth the stop for a quick bite to eat- the po-boys are way overstuffed with fresh fried shrimp and delicious. The locals were coming in non-stop while we ate, so it was obvious it's a local fave. Look for the big green maple leaf on the gas station sign. You'll probably pass it. read more

Seems the locals don't know what GREAT seafood is. I have been visiting Meridian for all of my life and each time I ask where I can get seafood I'm told Captains D's. I do not like the over breeding frozen tasting fish there but anyway. I went on Yelp and this came up. I ordered the 1/2 shrimp 1/2 oyster PoBoy and "IT WAS OFF THE CHAIN". Overflowing with flavor. This place is without a doubt the filthiest place I've ever been in for a long time. It's beyond me how this place passes any health department inspection, because the dirt and grim is from years of lack of cleaning. Saying all that it's clear people of Mississippi have very low standards with eating in dirty places, because this place is popular. Maybe it's the price or speed. The boiled shrimp had their shells still on and did not appear to have been deveined. Peeling the shells off these shrimp was difficult, leading me to believe they were undercooked or had been boiled previously and then warmed up utilizing a microwave. I do not know, only that it was an arduous task peeling the shrimp. I usually purchase three pounds of boiled shrimp a week at another establishment but with their constant expansion into various other enterprises, the quality of their boiled shrimp has suffered, thus I am looking for a replacement. This establishment met my requirements with regards to price and quantity, but it fell short, in my opinion, in the area of quality. In addition, their fried shrimp seemed to be more batter than shrimp. I had the 22 Piece Combo Plate, price was very reasonable and plentiful. I was surprised that you could not order boiled shrimp as a plate, only by the pound. Personnel at this establishment were knowledgeable, helpful and polite. Alright, THIS place is good ol athentic Mississippi Flavor, hands down! You wouldn't know it by the looks of it. Its what looks to be a standard family owned gasoline station. BUT the flavor that comes out of these seafood dishes has a real deal bayou flavor to it all! The Po'Boys here are truly overstuffed and the catfish here is fantastic to load up on! I'm pressed to say, don't waste your time at the restaurants claiming to be an authentic flavor... all you'll get is that watered down commercial flavor. There's nearly always a line (which is a hallmark of a good food joint) so expect to have a wait. Best po boy I think I've ever had. Got the shrimp po boy 6in, which is plenty big. Shrimp were spilling out and the fixings were perfect for this sandwich! I also got the fried okra, and this is some of the best. Extremely fresh, and very tasty batter. I currently live in Meridian, and am sad I've only just tried it now (moving soon). It's not really a sketchy area, as another reviewer states, but there are bars on the windows. During a nice spring day, it's not bad to sit inside and eat, but just depends on what you're looking for (it is a gas station). The crawfish there are also excellent. You can get them live or seasoned and cooked. A huge bagful! If you've never had crawfish, try them here. First time in Meridian, MS and after eating At Seafood Express, it will not be my last. This is a regular gas station with a lil restaurant inside. When I drove up I knew it was going to be good because you can see the line inside from the parking lot. When I walked in it was like heaven. Jesus told me to commit gluttony lol and that's what I did. All the food was good and I know that because I tried it. I had the fried chicken(GOOD) fried fish (VERY GOOD) fried salt water jumbo shrimp(GREAT) boil crawfish (GREAT) shrimp po-boy (GOOD) FYI the po-boy is not made with the jumbo shrimp but it was still good. LoL I even asked the lady for 1 fried oysters and it was (GOOD). Most of the sides was just ok not bad but just ok. Very disappointed! I stopped here and had some great food three years ago and couldn't wait to have it again on my next trip but everything was so under seasoned this time. The Mac n cheese was so bland. I actually think it may be the worse Mac n cheese I've had. The texture was great but it needed flavor! The crawfish tasted dirty and again very under seasoned. The chicken tenders were inedible and tasted powdery from the breading. The boiled shrimp is the only reason for the two stars! I travel frequently for business, and I planned on staying overnight in Meridian. I hadn't been to Meridian for awhile so I checked Yelp for up to date restaurant reviews. After a long day in the car, I chose take out from Seafood Express since I was staying at the nearby Hampton Inn. Yes, it is a kitchen inside a gas station convenience store. The selections were very impressive and many Meridians were waiting for their orders to be filled. They featured basically fried seafood as well as chicken. The prices are very affordable and the service was acceptable, though not overly friendly. I ordered an 8 inch oyster po boy and a large seafood gumbo. The food was well prepared and I got my moneys worth. I wish the beautiful oysters on the po boy weren't so overly crispy. There were plenty of them but I prefer them with the juices not fried out of existence. The gumbo was pretty good. It contained fish and a few small shrimp. I would like to try their fried chicken. They brought out 3 fresh batches while I was waiting and it looked exceptional. I would like to give Seafood Express 3 1/2 stars but there is no way to do that. read more

I easily give Seafood Express 5 stars because it's just flat out great food at a great price! I haven't had everything on the menu yet because I'm hooked on the Shrimp Po-Boy. A 6 inch po-boy is a meal for me and for 7 bucks, a great value. It's overstuffed with shrimp, mayo, onions and lettuce and delcious just the way they hand it to you. Yes it's in a convience store but as a life-long Mississippian, I've grown up eating some of the best food in places exactly like this so it brings back very good memories. The people are friendly, the customers are also, people are always in a good mood around great cooking. Go get a Shrimp Po-Boy, you'll be glad you did. I had to laugh at some of the negative reviews, because I've been to most of the towns those folks live and seen some pretty sketchy joints there, too. You know, the kind where they check you for a weapon at the door, and issue you one if you're unarmed. Bring your own cleaning supplies type places, you adults know what I'm talking about. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Now that we have that out of the way, the neighborhood isn't all that bad and yes, there are bars on the windows and yes, it's a gas station and yes, when they get busy they won't take time to pamper the over-privileged, but this is a working class joint run by working class people who work darn hard at what they do. And what they do is, mighty tasty as far as I'm concerned. Last time in, I got an 8" shrimp poboy, fries and a drink for less than ten bucks out-the-door, and the poboy was so stuffed with shrimp, I couldn't finish it all. Never mind the fries, they must have weighed a pound, couldn't finish those either. And, the food tasted good. For ten bucks, you can't beat that with a stick, and by the way, the place looked pretty clean to me. If you can do better than that in Meridian, I'd like to know where. read more
