San Diego Night Market - Opening ceremonies

San Diego Night Market

I visited the San Diego Night Market around 5:30 pm the first night, and there was not much of a…read moreline at all. At least this year they were able to rent out part of the SDCCU Stadium lot, so there's a ton of parking and no need for a shuttle to get there. There were a good amount of vendors, but the food was really just mediocre. You also really have to do your research on all the vendors before you go, because the one we decided to get was awful. The one we went to had these BBQ Squid Skewers which we ordered, and they were very undercooked. They were pretty much still raw. We took it back to them and they just cooked it a little bit more and the second time around the body of the squid was cooked better, but the tentacles were still very raw. Some of the vendors also didn't really plan accordingly because by 8 pm, before peak time, some of them were already sold out of items. Most of the main course type foods were just average, overpriced food. I think the better items to get here are the drinks and the desserts, so I would recommend getting something to eat before you arrive, and then wait in line for the drinks and desserts. There was absolutely no seating at all, so a lot of people, us included, just ended up sitting on the ground to eat our food. There were maybe like 5 tables that I saw in the entire venue which were obviously occupied very very quickly. There was a ton of open space, even with the amount of people walking around and the long lines, so there should definitely be a lot more tables than there actually were. I hope that next year they really rent out way more tables and chairs because this year it was just not enough. Like I said, I arrived around 5:30 pm, and I was glad that I did, because by 8 pm, some of the vendors would run out of certain items, and the lines were just so ridiculously long, which led to a ridiculously long wait, for ridiculously mediocre food. When we left around 9:45, the line to just get inside was so long that it reached the concrete border at the lot and had to make a bend in order to not go past it. If you're planning on coming here, I highly recommend going closer to the opening time because there is no way that I'd pay $5 to wait hours in line for sold out food. I went in early, so the wait times weren't so bad for me, which is probably why my experience wasn't as bad as others. It was still pretty bad though.

I find it humorous reading the one-star reviews from earlier tonight because the 2019 version of…read morethe SD Night Market was an improvement over the past years, especially the cluster that was on Convoy St in 2018. That being said, many of the critiques were spot-on and accurate. Here were my observations for the first night of the event... Pros: * There were many more parking spaces than in the Kearny Mesa area. A shuttle was no longer needed to transport people to the site. * Food vendors were more numerous this time (~32 compared to less than 10). * There was plenty of open space away from the food lines to walk around and not feel overcrowded. Cons: * The wait to get into the stadium parking lot was ridiculously long. The organizers needed to hire SD Police to direct traffic and override the signals which were useless. * There was a competing auto festival on the other side of the stadium lot so that added to the congestion on Friars Rd. * The admission lines should have been more efficiently managed especially for those who had already purchased a ticket on Eventbrite. * Some vendors really underestimated the customer demand and ran out of food early. * The food lines did take a long time as many of the booths seemed caught off guard by the crowds. Overall, I gave my experience 2.5 stars and rounded up because trust me, the SD Night Market has been even more poorly organized than what we have seen so far. PS: I heard the Fire Marshal had to shut down admission around 10 pm because the capacity of 5,000 attendees had been reached.

This is my 2nd time coming to this night market. I want to…read moresay it definitely has improved since last year. It seems like a lot more booths, they even had a stage for some entertainment. I did see a lot of the same vendors (food/non food) like last year. The prices might have come down a little bit compared to last year, but maybe only $1 or $2. Last year I got free tickets for admittance, this year I had to pay. Parking is free and it should stay free. I went during the night time and it was fairly busy but not jammed pack which I prefer. I did see from the freeway earlier in the day and the location looked insanely crowded. The things we tried: 1. Cane fusion- Mango/Guava sugar cane juice. They ran out of the good toppings and I didn't want what was left as available. (chia seeds and something else) I thought this was refreshing but not much guava flavor, the mango sweetness sort of overpowered it all. 6/10 2. Little Ding's- Gold N' Crispy Chicken- Popcorn Chicken and Mushroom fries Popcorn chicken was ok, I think I got a mix of regular flavor and spicy? I was hoping for more of the five spice on the popcorn chicken and this didn't have much. I should have made my order all regular since the spicy wasn't even spicy. I would say for this to be tasty, you always use dark meat for this dish or it will be dry. I would have given this a higher rating but TW popcorn chicken needs to be heavy on the five space. 7/10 Mushroom fries- I think these are enoki mushrooms? I have never gotten these before and they were super tasty. (a tad salty) 9.5/10 3. Lobsterdamus- Lobster fries- I wanted these to be so good, but they were not. Fries were cold, overcooked, just not good at all!! We had to pick out all of the teeny bits of lobster meat. I was sadly disappointed. 3/10 4. Honey Cones- If you haven't had these before, you should try them. They are super delicious. I want to say the outside reminds me of the cereal "Corn Pops". It's very light and airy. The ice cream part is sooooo creamy and delicious. I don't think I have ever seen a person take a bite and not say wow that's so good. But they are not cheap! 9/10 (knocking off 1 point for price) 5. Kanto's Fried tempura shrimp- Filipino Street food- This was pretty pricey and I was expecting full shrimp, battered with a tail attached. These did have the tail, but the middle was small bits of shrimp and it was way too much batter. Too greasy and no filling 2/10 6. Papa's Polvoron - shortbread and desserts- We got the traditional Filipino Shortbread cookies. 1. traditional 2. cookies and cream 3. butter Pecan These were pretty unique, I have never had these before. They are sort of made from fine ground powdery ingredients. You touch it and it will fall apart. I thought overall they were pretty good. 8/10 Sadly, like last time, there is only one place that has funnel cakes, it was sold out last night and this year too. I will definitely say this has improved from last year but still has a ways to go. 1. Maybe step up the live music line-up entertainment scene 2. Definitely needs new/different vendors that haven't been there before 3. Prices should be lower for the food, it would cause customers to make sure to attend each year Service: 8.5/10 Ambiance: 6.5/10 Food: 7.2/10

Not enough tables considering the bulk of the event is food. Adequate amount of portapotties with hand-washing stations. Parking in the surrounding mall area was generally available as people were coming and going. We weren't impressed and won't be back. The juiced drinks were really good though (Sunday Cafe). Sign said service dogs only, but regular dogs were in attendance. Crowd was friendly with kids and families.
