So after a…read morequick nip into town I realised that M & Co is McKays rebranded and renamed; silly really as I have walked past it dozens of times and even brought a couple of tops! So why the change of name and what's different? Well Mckays used to sell Ladies fashions, children's and baby selections of clothing too; which made the ranges smaller due to floor space. The new look M & Co in Selby has concentrated on ladies fashions, and rightly so; ladies wear needs far more space to give a decent selection. Personally I would have liked to have seen a separate children's wear store in Selby as there is a dire need for one. The children's and baby clothing can be found in the larger stores. The Selby branch offers ladies separates, dresses and coats in sizes 8 to 18 with its plus size range from 18 to 28. There is a good range now in casual clothing, work wear and evening dress. There is a fair selection of bags, belts and costume jewellery. M & Co offer very competitive clothing making them probably one of the cheapest brands on the high street.

A bachelors dream and situated in the centre of town right next to the Abbey Vaults so with the money you save you can treat yourself to a couple of pints! Although not as big as some Home Bargain stores its still a fair size and the prices really do have to be seen to be believed, its like a Wise Owl superstore! Anyone remember Wise Owl?

The store replaced the indoor market which was called the In-shops that never really took off. There is no parking for the store but there is a fair sized Pay and Display car park just around the corner. The store is light and spacious. I would describe Home Bargains as a bit of an Aladdin's cave as they seem to stock just about everything from toiletries, toys, baby essentials, stationary, household, foods and drinks. The stock is usually branded good quality products but significantly reduced. The toy section is well stocked and many of them are below half the retail price. I use the toiletries and food sections the most as they must be a good 30% cheaperer than the supermarkets. I have to say I rate this store really high as I have now cut my main shop in the supermarket and replaced many of the good with Home Bargains. I shop here weekly.

Bensons are a second hand shop that sells just about anything you can image, my Husband call it an Aladdin's for boys. So you won't find ladies fashions, shoes and hands bags, it more like fishing equipment, DVD's, video games and consoles, house hold appliances and spares, Hoover's, TV's DVD players, Bric-a-brac.like I said you name it, they probably sell it. And with being second hand the prices are always worth a look. The only problem you may have is loosing your husband for several hours while he browses:)

I would say that Greenwoods Menswear is aimed at more distinguished men with ranges in day, formal and office wear. I think the thing that sets Greenwoods above the rest is their formal hire wear, which has now been re-branded as the 1860 Formal Hire. As a family we have Hired suits for two weddings where my husband was Best Man and required top hats and tails. Not only where the suits of excellent quality and a reasonable price but fit well too.

A Wetherell & Sons is a family owned store that prides its self on its personal service and good customer service. Quite recently the store has benefited from a major refurbishment which to be honest was desperately required to take it out of the 'Grace Brothers' look to a more contemporary one. The new look store is fresher, brighter with new modern fittings and decor. The window displays are greatly improved as it the signage. I had a look at the clothing the other day and the brand names are quality ones as before but aided by the modern surroundings fit much better in the store. The Cafe has always been really good, much like the whole store but only now you can see it.

The company already have 90 stores and are planned to open many more during this recession. Definitely one of the winners. There is a large free car park. B&M are very similar to the fabulous Home Bargains, which we are lucky enough to have in Selby too. The store is a large one selling everything from toys, non-fresh foods to shampoo all at hugely discounted prices. There is also some stock left over from Au Naturale Interiors, so you will find some furniture and interior knick-knacks. I visit B&M weekly along with Aldi and have managed to save pounds on the shopping bill :)

There are over 250 stores nationwide now with an online website. The store stocks ladies fashions in sizes 6 to 18, with a 'Inspire' range from 19 to 26. In addition there is a teenager range called 'Generation 915' with up to the minute ranges for those fashion conscious youngsters. Recently the Selby store started stocking styles in taller ranges and a limited maternity selection. You will also find a good range in sleepwear, underwear, socks and accessories. There are ranges in everyday evening and shoes, with selected styles in wider widths. The prices are surprisingly reasonable and the quality is quite good.

I would describe Heaven and Home as one of those little shops that is full of interesting and unusual knick-knacks, ideal for treats or gifts alike. The shop is run by a husband and wife team, who are very friendly. If you wanted something that is not in stock they will order it in from several of the catalogues that they carry. Heaven and Home stock a wide range of quality pottery, money boxes, small furniture, branded children books, pens, pencil cases to, glassware and some lovely hand-made cards. I took my friend there as she wanted presents for her bridesmaids and was delighted at what choice there was. This really is a pretty shop that is well worth a visit.
