It overlooks Nuremberg's old town. It is filled with historic imperial residences, museums, and the most beautiful panoramic views of the city. We visited just for the sweeping views twice. Once on our Guru walk and again the next day as part of our Viking guided walk. At one point in time, it was one of Europe's most important medieval fortifications. It also served as a royal residence for Holy Roman Emperors and German kings. The complex includes the Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle) and the Burggrafenburg (Burgrave's Castle). Its foundations can be traced back over a thousand years ago to the early 1000s. Amazing! A must see for the views and more in Nuremberg.

Once a residence of the Holy Roman Emperors, it symbolized both imperial power & the city's strategic importance. We are explored its fortified halls, learn about medieval life & imperial politics, and climbed up to the top of the Sinwell Tower for views over the old town. We stepped down into the Well (Tiefer Brunnen) and entered the Romanesque double chapel. We paid €10 and visit the palace, museums, climbed the tower, and explored the grounds. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon and there wasn't a wait. We saw armor, weapons, religious ornaments from this 800 year-old palace that survived World War II in about 2 hours. There were clean restrooms, a small gift shop & beer garden.

This museum only retains one of its old gates. The rest is newly built over several decades. They even integrated a church in the museum. This makes for tough navigation (just as one of the attendants for directions to specific exhibits), but also contains the different eras to different buildings and atmospheres. Gotta love Germany: the museum offers a family ticket that afforded us acces for about 10 euros. Cool works allround make this museum a pleasant place to check when in Nürnberg.

A slightly surprising find in Nuremberg is this museum of national importance: an expansive…read morecollection of German art, culture and history from the Neolithic to the present. If you want to understand the complex cultural history of Germany prior to its political unification in the 19th Century, this is the place to come. Set aside at least half a day to do it justice. The museum itself has its origins in the growing sense of pan-German identity in the mid 19th Century, around the time the forces of unification were in the ascendent. Some of these elements (such as frescoes and stained glass) were rather Wagnerian in their somewhat romantic appropriation of German history, though much was destroyed in the 1945 bombing. (The curation is very honest in explaining how it differs from modern understanding of German culture.) The building itself is very modern, but incorporates much of a previous convent - an excellent setting for some of the religious works. It's hard to cover the scope of the collection here, but it starts with grave goods, arms and jewellery from the Neolithic to the period up to the Roman invasions in the first century BC. There is then a huge (and I mean huge) collection of devotional Christian art from the Frankish period right up to the 18th Century: this includes sculpture and metalwork, but above all, a vast collection of religious paintings, the highlight of which is a collection of works by Albrecht Dürer. This is all supplemented by galleries on domestic objects, costume, scientific instruments and the secular decorative arts; and world-class collections of musical instruments, early mediaeval tapestry and mediaeval armour. It includes the first ever globe of the world (contemporary with Christopher Columbus - so it misses out the Americas!); and a self-portrait by Rembrandt. The displays are for the most part in English and German, but audio guides are also available. There's a lot of emphasis on level access but it's worth checking access to some of the galleries. The museum has a complex and rather sprawling layout, and we walked just shy of two miles around the exhibits in four hours. Afterwards, there's an excellent cafe to rest your feet (you'll need it) and a very educational gift shop.

And I love them even more when they share their passion with you!…read more What a fantastic event and great opportunity for young and new designers and vendors of creative "stuff" to introduce themselves to the people of Nürnberg! Basically, there were two different types of vendors/designers/etc: - the designers that had just started out and were riding the wave of "hipster"-life...most of their clothes were the same style and while I am sure they put a lot of effort in them, they just didn't do it for me - the ones that really blew you away because they did stuff for good reasons (fair trade, recycling, local products), or because they created something so different to what you would usually see, or just innovative and plain cool stuff (turning your old radio into a modern bluetooth-enhanced media station) or they just had a really cool style and got you hooked on whatever they were doing. You could not only talk to the designers and get to know their inspiration and ideas behind their concepts, but you could also buy everything on display that day! Ranging from frogs made by prisoners in Nepal (yup, we bought one of those!) to baby clothes handmade by Nürnberg locals, there was definitely something for everyone! Apart from all the designer/vendor stalls, there was of course a coffee bar, a food truck (Guerilla Gröstl, yum!) and other food choices - as well as plenty of stijlish spots to sit down and have a break! If I could, I would have bought all the chairs standing around, they were so unbelievably comfy! Bottom line: * Fantastic event overflowing with creativity * There were some epic designers & vendors with really cool ideas! * Great organisation of the event * Please come back next year!! ;)
