Your print was definitely smaller and I have to assume that was done on purpose. I will not be able to renew my subscription to this paper if it continues to be so unintelligible. We've been getting The Villager for several years; we even subscribed for a few years, but since it…read morewent free it's easy to find in a street-corner box anywhere in the neighborhood. I see from the first two reviews of The Villager that their editorial policies don't please everybody. I don't think full-page tobacco ads are appropriate either, but I know they have to keep an eye on their bottom line, and the advertising revenue pays for publishing and distribution. The paper has clearly been successful; for my neighborhood, it's now spun off into the "East Villager;" they also publish the "Downtown Express," "The Gay City News," and "Chelsea Now." What I'm mainly responding to is they've kept their finger on the pulse of the neighborhood, so to speak. They have features like "Clayton's Page," run by videographer/photographer Clayton Patterson, and the paper is full of slice-of-life photos that other publications don't have time for. They've been around since 1933--longer than the sold-out VOICE--and have managed to stay topical and in touch with their readership.

Name changes cost $35 and you have to endure talking to a super rude Irish lady over the phone. She doesn't care about wasting you time and will tell you things that you already know over and over again. In my particular case, the paper "misplaced" my notarized affidavit that they needed to send in the mail AND the rude B didn't inform me that I can pay $2 and get a replacement and she made me wait 3 weeks until it came in the mail prior to getting the replacement. As you can guess by my anger, it never came and I had to make a trip to pick up the affidavit myself. Here's what I did; I called the bank and cancelled my payment to them because they didn't provide me $35 dollars worth of service. Pick a different newspaper for name changes and save yourself the trouble of this unprofessional establishment.

The Greenpoint Star is what I might call a fakepaper…read more It's a weekly, granted, but it shares some content with the Queens Ledger, Brooklyn Downtown Star, Glendale Register, Queens Examiner, and several other papers -- which means that each week's edition is a melange of neighborhood-specific news reporting and shared content. I've been getting the paper by subscription for free for ages because I responded to a photograph-identifying contest they held: What is this bit of graffiti? Tell us, and win six months for free. Six turned to 12 turned to however many, and I'm happy to still get it in my mailbox. Seriously! Despite my reservations, the Star is worthwhile for several reasons. It often breaks uber-local news before the Manhattan dailies. Its Brooklyn and Queens politcal analysis and commentary is spirited and spunky. And it has several outstanding features. The Christa Cuts column, penned by a young woman who seems to have recently moved further down Long Island, is full of attitude. The "Been Mugged Recently?" clip-out response form seems to yield few responses. And the "Back in the Day" offers a slice of historic life unparalleled by other area papers. I can understand how the Ledger/Star Newspaper Group wants to capitalize on interpaper synergy, but I can't help but feel that half of the paper isn't intended for me. That said, I still read it every week, and if you live in Greenpoint, I still recommend you pick it up. You'll make a better citizen and resident.
