Walking (or taking the furnicular) up Schlossberg is definitely a must when in Freiburg. Beware an exhausting walk up there though. And the lack of signage will make you wonder if you've chosen the right path up. And there is seemingly a gazillion paths to chose from. But it seems like every one leads to the top, so don't fret (like me, constantly chatting with myself in Swedish like a lunatic since I thought I'd gotten lost with noone around to ask directions from).
Finally I heard lots of voices and realised I'd reached a viewpoint. Which turned out not to be the highest point, but still a great plateau to rest a bit and get some truly glorious panorama views of Freiburg itself but also the surrounding Schwarzwald mountains. I then continued up to another viewpoint, which I'm still not sure was the absolute highest point. But great enough so after that I ventured down on another path feeling very revived and grateful for a beautiful few hours spent.
And meeting lots of panting walkers on their way up, while I practically jump skipped my way down the mountain.
Nb, there is no castle on the Schlossberg no more, it was demolished hundreds of years ago. But still, it's a royal view and walk up there. read more
