Spectacular castle in Schwerin. Only an hour from Hamburg on the ICE train. The castle was incredible and the gardens surrounding it were beautiful as well. It's a bit confusing inside because you start in the museum and not much English was spoken but we figured it all out eventually. Highly recommend this site. Probably one of my favorite places in Germany. read more

It was really easy to catch the train from Rostock Hbf to Schwerin Hbf. It's about 1:04 long ride. If you buy daily round trip it's 13.5 euros. Also, with train change in Rostock you can continue to Warnemünde. City is lovely and it's short walk less than 15 minutes to the castle. Out of the train station turn right follow Wismarche strasse till Arsenal strasse and you are already in downtown. From there is plenty of signs to the castle. Castle is outstanding and is joy for eyes and cameras. It's so pretty to walk around and enjoy scenery. Things change inside. Very bad signage where to start and where to go. Almost no one speak English to help you out. We paid for audio guides, but that work for only one floor. There is a major restoration in progress. Still worthwhile to see, but be ready to struggle to navigate through exhibitions. read more

Schwerin Castle is very beautiful, well maintain & a sight to behold! You will need to pay extra to be able to take picture inside the castle. But do yourself the favor & just pay. The details are magnificent! The castle's garden are spacious, clean & beautiful. It is a very nice refreshing sight! read more

Very nice castle, well kept. Don't expect to be in a Game if Thrones ambiance. I expect more in therms if history. Still, must go.

This palace is absolutely gorgeous and well maintained. It is located on a island in Schwerin and it is really easy to get there, in fact, you can walk there in 10-15 minutes from the train station (no need to drive). It is definitely worth a day trip to go inside the castle (totally inexpensive) and walk around and explore the gardens a well. I dont think its a tourist 'hot spot' so you dont need to worry about long lines or annoying crowds. I would reccomend coming to see the castle and maybe spend some time in the gardens and take in the view. read more

I really, really wanted to love it here. But by this point of my trip, I was a bit palaced-out and it was only okay. Having read that the interior of Schwerin was extensively modern replicas due to a fire in the early 1900s, we decided to forgo entering and to just enjoy the pretty exterior and the lovely gardens around. And to be fair, it is pretty and the gardens are very well-maintained and being on an island gives you nice vistas into the town. But was it worth the trip out of the way (we were actually in Warnemunde for the day, so we took 2 trains, spent €15 each, and over an hour of train time to get here)? No, probably not. But if you're there anyway, and hadn't already toured like 5 palaces in a few days? Sure, you may love it. I honestly believe that Schwerin Castle is better appreciated at a distance - up close the grandeur of the architecture and the stunning placement are lost. read more

Schweriner Schloss is definitely the tourism highlight of Schwerin. It's the beautiful former home of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and now the seat of government for the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommen. There's an entrance fee of EUR6 and a further EUR3 for a photography pass, which is entirely reasonable. Considering that the castle is situated in the former East Germany, it has survived in a pretty good condition, with a lot of the original furniture and artwork still here. Make sure that you go for a walk around the grounds as well There are some spectacular lake-views to be seen. read more
