Growing up Polish-AmerIcan in northeastern Pennsylvania, smoked kielbasa was on the dinner table for every major holiday, be it Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and even some everyday dinners, just because. And, while there are many meat shops in the Scranton area, my family's choice for kielbasa has always been Schiff's even though it's about 20 miles from their home. Now, having moved away from Pennsylvania decades ago, I haven't been able to find kielbasa that is as good as that from Schiff's from my childhood memories. So, during a recent trip "back home", I stopped by Schiff's to stock up on kielbasa. Our daughter also requested that we pick up its necessary accompaniment, horseradish. My family loves both the regular white horseradish (spicier) and the red one that is prepared with beets. Schiff's also has an excellent selection of other meats: a deli with sliced meats, cheeses, and specialty salads; fresh fruits and vegetables; ethnic foods such as pirogies; and more. read more

I purchased 6 lobster tails from Schiffs for the holiday. It was quite expensive, but a family tradition to have lobster for New Year's Eve. After cooking the tails, and beginning to eat them they had a strong ammonia smell. It was the most disappointing dinner experience. Luckily we did not eat enough to get sick. read more

I avoid a carnivore diet with a strong proclivity towards plant-based, but Schiff's has the world's best kielbasa IMHO. Originally from Scranton but now residing in our Gettysburg address ( I love saying that!), I've been ingesting kielbasa from Schiff's for as long as I remember. I was in the environs for family business and decided to pick up some "basa" and a few other items, thus dropped in. Be advised that the parking lot is straight out of Hades, is locked in and of insufficient size, and devilish to maneuver within and a challenge to pull out. You'll likely bump into other people or be bumped into, and navigating your shopping cart night not be easy if a Babci brigade had descended on the store prior to your arrival. The check out isles are a free for all, but cashiers are quite friendly for the most part, and hard-working and somewhat frazzled employees will offer assistance if asked. The prices are fair, the produce fresh, and the selection large. 4 stars doesn't mean I had a major problem with Schiffs, but just the parking lot knocked it down a star. My preference is for the fresh kielbasa, btw, and get some white horseradish and poppy seed roll while you're there, yum! read more

If you're not from the Scranton area or don't know about Schiff's you're missing out. This place has everything. First off it has one of the best kielbasa ever. Then add all the great deli items plus a great assortment of every day food items. Need a whole block of cheese? They have that too. Oh and some really great Kolache. They have Lekvar, Poppyseed, Nut and apricot all with and without raisins. Whenever I'm in town I always make a trip to Schiff's. This last trip I also had orders from my brother and daughter. Two years in a row we received food from the deli that was not prepared correctly. Last year it was a pan of penne in vodka sauce, how we received it was penne in the pan and the sauce what little there was, just dropped in the middle of the pan, not nearly enough to cover the penne. Had to find a store open on Christmas day that had vodka sauce to make it edible. This year we had a pan of the butter and garlic chicken strips, which are usually very tasty, well not this year. The chicken strips were like rubber, no taste of garlic whatsoever. Looks like it just had butter or oil on them. I've learned my lesson, for years we have been a steady customer of Schiffs for all or get togethers and party's, that ends! read more

If you eat as much red meat as I do, Schiff's is the only serviceable butcher in NEPA. Buying whole tenderloins and rib cuts here and butchering it yourself, it is affordable to eat top-quality red meat three times a day, which I regularly do. Schiff's has the absolute best prices and selection, whether you're looking for USDA Prime for a special occasion or just regular top cuts to get you through the week. I was there this morning and pressed the buzzer for a butcher. A lady came out and I asked for some beef liver. She said they were out and won't get any in for weeks. I didn't realize there was a huge surge on liver. When she said none for weeks doesn't add up either because they had severing else there in beef. I came in there last week to go to the deli and buy some chicken. When I walked over there was a guy standing there. He started to complain. Why do people keep coming? I'm a regular customer at Schiff's. It's basically a restaurant meat supplier that has a shop for the public. Really nice quality meats and poultry, really affordable prices, some interesting bags of frozen odds and ends, and a pretty rockin' hot/cold prepared food section. It's not perfect, the produce section is pretty ho-hum and it is NOT a supermarket, so you can't find a bunch of things that you kind of expect from grocery shopping. (tin foil, cling wrap, newspapers, etc.) That being said, it's not a grocery store and they sell all kinds of plastic and disposable stuff...like pretty affordable chaffing dishes and cans of sterno to fuel them, or plastic serving platters or those paper boats that you get fries served to you in. It's a bit different, a little out of the ordinary, but a great place if you're buying some meat! read more

This was a must stop on my childhood favorites culinary tour of North Eastern Pa. I fondly remember this place growing up. You could and still get nearly anything you want/need by way of food. This was where we got our Veggies, Minute steaks, Perogies, Fried Chicken, any type of cheese you could imagine and Kielbasa and real hot or sweet Italian sausage. The real stuff.. the good stuff. Not full of fillers and things you can't pronounce. Recipes that go back for what must be generations. My day was made even brighter when I got to the cash register and was informed they will ship!! I don't have to wait years for someone to come visit or a trip home to get quality meats. I will stock up before I leave the area, but this was a great sampling of what I get to take home and now know I can get with a phone call. read more

I love this place. My mother in law used to stop here for kielbasi and sometimes she would take me along. The prices ar good on some things and not so good on others. I love their raisin tea biscuits, chopped cole slaw, "yesterday's" fried chicken and frozen pierogies. They carry a big selection of produce, meats, baked goods, deli delights and general groceries. We usually have to control ourselves and spend between 50 and 100 dollars. read more

Good variety of food, fresh and prepared, but no better than a hundred other places and prices average to higher than normal. Salads (cole slaw,potato etc.) was bland at best. If you're in the area, stop in and judge for yourself but, don't expect any bargains. read more

When I am in Scranton, it is a must for me to visit Schiff's. They have great prices on food but, I go here for 3 reasons. The smoked kielbasa, cheese bread & cole slaw. I love their cole slaw so much, I get a big tub to take home and a small deli container to eat in the car. Im not sure why the slaw is so delicious, but it is the best I have ever eaten. Schiff's is a pretty decent market. They had homemade kielbasi samples for tasting, and I have to tell you it's very delicious. As is their pork & sauerkraut, fried chicken and sauteed mushrooms. All of which are cooked in-house. Other than that, Schiff's is your standard market with an extra abundance on butchered meat, which I haven't had the pleasure of buying or trying. read more

My wife and I discovered this store after many years of searching for someone that can supply good quality meat at affordable prices. We sought out wholesale butcher's, even had Amish farmer's provide us with meat. Schiff's is the only selleer that we have been to repeatedly. The quality of their meat is not good quality; it's outstanding quality! In the year that we have been shopping for meat there, we have not had a bad piece and I swear the meat is PRIME not Choice. There are other products there that we were not able to find elsewhere and we will CONTIINUE to by our meat there and no where else. read more

i am a small fast food vender in the Dunmore area. I have been dealing with schiffs for at least 30 years on & off. while it's true they have great meat products, I have to say, their service sucks and always has!! at least for the 'small' fast food owner. I was spending approx. $600 - $700 a week with schiffs for ALL of my business needs- not just meat! as a business owner time is of the utmost importance and I either had them deliver or had them pick the order and then I would simply pick it up. all of the staff there SUCKS! from the people at the front desk to the people in the back office!! EVERY TIME I ordered there would be problems: eggs broken, pizza boxes soaking wet, forgetting this forgetting that. I asked for $15 worth of corned beef & $15 worth of pastrami - they sent me $45 worth of each -$90! for 2 pieces of meat that I couldn't use in a whole year!!! I bought a mandolin slicer for my tomato's & lettuce. when I got the thing, I couldn't cut radishes on it it was so small!! I wanted to return it and was given the hardest time I ever had returning anything anywhere!! I was buying food there ALL OF THE TIME and when I returned the thing the lady at the front desk called the manager and said 'the guy from Dunmore sub is here to return something.' very sarcastic even though she knew what my name was!! everytime I get their onions their ROTTEN! I told them one time if they didn't want me shopping there to just tell me. when I was very angry about the hussle with the corned beef and the pastrami, billy carwtright approached me and asked me why I was always angry everytime I get an order. I explained everything above. he told me I can always shop somewhere else. so while I have to do everything twice because of the poor service at schiffs - it's my fault! i guess if i were spending thousands a week, they may have paid more attention and would have served me better. so- while they are 5 STAR for their meat they are also 5 STAR on their shitty service and arrogance!! they will NEVER get another penny from this business again - but then again I think they treat me that way because they think I won't survive in business anyway! whatever!! Do not buy the seafood they sell over the holidays the lobster tails were spoiled two years in a row. Last year all three had a foul ammonia taste and smell and this year one of three had a foul ammonia taste and smell. An ammonia smell and or taste in cooked lobster tail means it is spoiled i.e. it sat too long prior to freezing or it thawed and was re-frozen. Unfortunately this smell is undetectable prior too cooking the tails and thus you will have wasted your money as well as have a spoiled New Years celebration compliments of Shiffs' read more

had a recent fluke experience with a product there and messaged them to let them know and didn't ask or expect anything in return but was offered something Adam and today i went to pick it up and was told he wasn't there and that they would mail it to me and i went home and an hour later Adam from schiff's was at my door with way more than what was offered and i was in shock that he/they would go above and beyond as to go to someones house to deliver this-who does something this cool anymore? probably nobody. i was extremely shocked and impressed. thank you schiff's and Adam for you most generous offer, it was way more than enough. this is great and exceptional customer service read more
