I loved the chess tables and the super bright reds and yellows of chairs, benches and tables scattered throughout this miniscule one-half acre patch of downtown greenery. I saw two prominent works of art in the form of park statues today. Gossip is a 2004 bronze statue of two women, chatting over a short wall. This is the one I saw first and it really grabbed my attention. Mommy's Shoes is a 1990 bronze statue of a young girl sitting on a park bench, looking in a hand held mirror, and trying on shoes that are obviously too big for her. I loved the splashes of red in her shoes, blouse, and hat band that really popped against the dark bronze of the rest of the statue. The park was fairly empty this afternoon -I saw one woman sitting on a bench deeply involved in a phone conversation. And two Evangelical types hanging out on a second bench. They gave me a polite "hello" and thankfully didn't do any preaching. The park was neat and clean and very nice.

Just enough to check out Marilyn and some of the other sculptures in the area. Marilyn is huge. I barely stood up past her ankle. There did seem to be quite a few shady characters loitering around. But I've come to expect that in Stamford. This isn't a park I'd come to spend time in. But who doesn't love a giant Marilyn.

The few people on the board have advised us of the stringent process of the Superintendent of Education for many years. Scarsdale is also one of the most affluent suburban Westchester villages besides Bronxville, Rye, Chappaqua and Bedford. Back in 1981, Scarsdale was prominent in the news after the scandalous murder of the Scarsdale Diet Doctor, Dr. Tarnower remember? His longtime girlfriend, Jean Harris, shot the doctor at his home when she suspected he was having an affair with another woman. Poor Jean Harris was convicted of 2nd-degree murder & served 12 years in prison. Back when I was a kid the story made the headlines everywhere! These days we often enjoy the many businesses here in bucolic Scarsdale: the variety of restaurants, cafés, the reliable Scarsdale Post Office, and many lovely shops that line the square. The Vernon Hill shopping mall is great with a Trader Joe's, and lovely DeCicco & Sons for gourmet grocery shopping. Scarsdale is approximately 45 minutes train ride to Manhattan's Grand Central Terminal on Metro North. Thank you for reading.

The town is known for being affluent and for its great public schools. Friends and relatives have mentioned how competitive it can be - one of my friends scored a perfect math SAT and ended up going to an Ivy League university. Others started their own businesses. Nothing too exciting seems to happen here - locals may remember the Scarsdale diet doctor scandal but that was many decades ago. For entertainment, the town offers convenient access to Manhattan via train or car. Not many downsides to living in Scarsdale if you can afford it.

The scenic overlook offers a few view spots where you can see the sound all the way to Long Island. A fun little excursion after my visit to the Trolley Museum.

Road was closed to vehicular traffic, but the walk was nice and gradual, all of it on what seemed to be new macadam. After about 1.6 miles, road forks. To the right is a short walk to Judge's Cave. To the left, a short walk to the scenic overlook. Interesting story commemorated on a plaque on the cave. Very few other people, and almost as many dogs. Scenic overlook kind of blah....no water views, but at an elevation of about 600 ft. Overall, a beautiful day. Breezy, shaded by a nice canopy most of the way. Good way to stretch the legs, and learn an interesting piece of history.

The park has an inspiring story too; it used to be a dirty, concrete river channel but was turned into a lively green space. It even won awards like the American Planning Association's "Great Places in America." It has a modern carousel pavilion that's great for families, along with a sparkling fountain and an ice skating rink. There's lots of benches scattered along the path by trees. You can hear the water flowing over rocks or enjoy community events such as outdoor movies, fitness classes, or summer concerts.
