If you are looking for a unique gift or keepsake which was "actually made" in the area you visited…read moreJobi Pottery is a great choice. As one previous reviewer said the company was started in 1953. Two men started selling their pottery next door to the Highland Lighthouse. The business is now owned by Susan Kurtzman who not only sells the pottery but creates the current pieces with help from family. I first saw the pottery being sold at the National Seashore gift shop and later viewed an exhibit of vintage pieces on display at a local museum. At that point I decided to visit the Jobi studio. The Jobi Studio had a much larger selection of pottery with multiple patterns. More importantly, Ms. Kutzman herself took the time to explain the uses for various shaped pieces and the history of each pattern. She patiently waited for me to select an item. While the store closing time was quickly approaching I was not rushed. Although gift boxes were not available she carefully wrapped the pottery in paper, inserted the item piece, along with a company history card and brochure in a gift bag which was topped with tissue paper. She providing this extra service knowing "the gift" was for me. In closing please note the studio is on rt 6 but is set back from the road and hidden from full view.

What is produced now is vastly different in complexity of design and color from the original Jobi Pottery. These new functional pieces (do not put in dishwasher) are brightly colored with a simple, repetitive, hand- painted design of a fish. They are striking and whimsical and are priced at a moderate to expensive cost dependent upon size. It was good to stop and see. Did not purchase due to cost vs artistry.

That is really missing the art of throwing the clay ! The owner Gill was so friendly and puts so much thought into his pieces. I was impressed by the variety of pottery pieces offered. Then as you walk around the store, you can see pottery at all stages of its production. Bonus for me: the day I was there, Kevin was talking to his high school art teacher who inspired him to go into this field. It was so nice to see the mentor/mentee relationship, and from their conversation is sounds like Kevin is paying this forward with some youngins. The pottery is lovely, but the best places are all about the people behind the art, and Barnstable Pottery is one of those places.

Now I, being a fan, enthusiast and novice artist myself always have a special place in my heart for a pottery studio. When I walked in with my two partners in crime, we found the studio owner sitting at one of 4 wheels trimming pieces and enjoying the wonderful sunny day. There was a basset hound lounging on the floor and a charming woman keeping him company. Walking in you are immediately at ease, listening to the fountain made of thrown pieces and other parts as it playfully blows to each part. There are combination pieces making castles of all sizes in addition to other functional pieces. Mugs, vases, bowls, other little jars and containers. The castles themselves were impressive and obviously he has a considerable amount of time vested in each. I had even seen a bowl I was sure was hand build slab work but low and behold it was a huge, shallow bowl that had obvious signs of thrown work. There were even small oil lamps he had thrown and built. I almost regret not purchasing anything. Then we got to talking. He was welcoming and laid back almost as you would expect anyone to be who enjoys cape life. He was full of knowledge about all sorts of other things and even directed us to great lunch spots and a coffee house he raved about in the village. We had to have chatted for over an hour while admiring the style of his art that surrounded us. As we were hurrying out the door to get to the coffee shop before it close, we promised to be back. And next time I am NOT leaving empty handed.
