Boy, where do I start with this place? It was recommended by a local who told us we can't go wrong at The Sawmills. He was right! We are 5 Retired Firefighters from Los Angeles on a multi-day bike ride in the area. We noticed that the parking lot was full but upon entering we were able to find a table which was the only empty one left. That's always a good sign if the locals go there meaning it must be good. We were greeted by one of our waitresses, Kandy, who could not have been nicer and sweeter to us out-of-towners! She made us feel at home! What a great personality and sense of humor she has! Large menu has so many choices and when I asked Kandy about several items, she offered to give me samples! Who does that anymore? No one but, this place does! The food and ambiance could not have been better. What a blast we had! One of the best experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. Just when I thought it could not get and better we met Mabel. She was a hoot too! We were in good hands with those two memorable women taking care of our needs and entertaining us at the same time! Those two women made our trip to NC a very memorable one we won't ever forget. We still talk about them and what great time we had. We've been going here for years, but we were disappointed in our last visit. We try to support local businesses, but not sure we'll go back anytime soon. I ordered two pancakes and sausage patties this time. The pancakes were cooked to perfection, but the sausage was a little black from being overcooked. Be that as it may, the real issue for me is how they served the syrup. They put about 2 ounces in a small bowl, which was barely enough for 1 pancake, let alone 2 large pancakes. I had to go up to the counter to request more syrup (waitress never came back after dropping off our food). To our surprise, they changed 50 cents more for a little more syrup, otherwise I'd be eating pancakes with nothing on them. Just nickel and dime customers to death. I'd rather them be up front and charge more for pancakes so you at least get enough syrup! I did mention it to one of the owners, but should not have to. Just disappointed they did this and we are not planning to go back for a while. read more
