Located in a little alcove next to the Lord Aberdeen Hotel, the Lord Aberdeen Market is tiny but has a little bit of everything. Besides the usual items of milk, eggs, butter, OJ, condiments, coffee, toiletry items, snacks, chips, etc. they have a few unexpected items like soy milk, black beans (canned), nutella, various ethnic sauces, as well as fresh fruit and veggies (though selection is limited). The bread and cheese selection is also pretty good. Not surprisingly, the beer, wine and liquor section take up a healthy percentage of space here. I am somewhat embarrassed to say that we bought large blocks of butter here on at least three separate occasions, even though we started the trip with 2 lbs. for our group of 8 adults and 8 children. I suppose Julia Child would approve. Prices are on the high side, which is exactly what you would expect for the only market in a resort area. Service is friendly and personable.

I really recommend ordering the pepper steak pie. I heard they bring it in fresh almost daily. It comes ready hot and the steak is really rich and tasty, the pepper on top is the perfect seasoning. I also ordered a spiked hot chocolate which was great. I was able to sit by the window and sip on the hot chocolate that was perfectly portioned (booze to chocolate ratio). There's a good view of the fireworks on Saturday as well. The place gets slightly crowded during the lunch hours, but if you come in an hour past lunch, it settles down. Really enjoyed the market as well, they have everything from medicine, soups, candy station and food you can bring home and microwave.

The ice is very expensive, by the way. However, the store basically carries everything under the sun. If you're not on the ball, the bakery will run low or completely out of items, like the sticky buns. You're better off to shop earlier in the day rather than late afternoon or early evening to avoid long line-ups at the till and making tough decisions such as, what do I buy now that the sticky buns are gone? Also, if you need a break from the excessive heat, you know Askew's is going to have the air conditioning cranked.

Situated next to the Dutchman Dairy , this "Fruit Stand" is huge . Fresh berries to dehydrated goodies to fresh bread and so many sauces, it's a perfect spot to load up your groceries. Also, if I am buying multiple cases or looking for something outside the BC growing season, I know Fruit World will have what I need--and that it will be at a reasonable price. I also appreciate the rigorous sorting process. When you go there, you will see employees sorting through produce and picking out "subpar" items. (I put "subpar" in quotes because many of the picked-out items look good to me (and sometimes end up in a discount box).) I can trust that everything that is available for me to purchase is high-quality. At a grocery store, I would typically pick through items, but I never have to do that at Fruit World. In addition to produce, there is a thoughtful curation of artisanal products from BC (e.g., mustards, jams, breads, beauty products). I love asking the owners about the artisans they have discovered. The customer service is phenomenal. The dedication and love that go into Fruit World are evident in the smiles and customer service!
