Hot take: their pizza isn't great. Sure the vibes at Satchels are cool, everybody seems to be loving the vibes. Just because a building is cool doesn't mean the pizza is good! If you want a good saucy pizza, go anywhere else. If you want a sauceless, cheese heavy pizza go straight to Satchels. When Satchels used to own Satchels squared, I was quite shocked. Satchels squared was a saucy wonderful pizza, the perfect pan pizza one could say. The waiting staff is wonderful, no shade to them. I do have beef with some of the workers but that's personal beef!! Don't worry about it, because they are willing to squash the beef to provide some decent pizza. Overall: cool tables good pizza. The three stars are for the waiters sake, they don't deserve less than that and if I could separately rate the experience I'd say the waiters are 5/5 stars. One of my favorite places to go while I'm back in Gainesville. I introduced my girlfriend to this pizza joint, she's from Brooklyn, and she fell in love. The atmosphere is that good old Gainesville hipster vibe we love. They've extended a lot and really added to their location. Service is quick, even though the area is rather large. Pizza was delicious. Definitely worth a visit while we were in town. The dough was so good and the crust was perfect. We enjoyed sitting outside in the nice weather. Disclaimer: Parking can be very tight, extra parking can be found in the western Adjacent lot. Atmosphere is amazing, very artistically unique (especially the tile mosaic theme). Their signature Satch Salad was refreshing, and their pizzas were well-cooked with fresh ingredients. I had a table of 6, no complaints from any of them. I don't look to go to Satchel's very often, as I am really not a fan of their pizza, but it is close to my work place, so it happens from time to time. This time around it was for lunch, so I went for the lunch special of a salad and a slice of pizza, plus an extra slice because I was feeling hungry. One slice of jalapeno, the other with pineapple. Frankly, I should have just gone for the single slice with two toppings, because I was stuffed afterwards. The salads are quite good, I will happily admit. The pizza? Meh. Really, not a fan of this style of pizza and how they make it. However, the place is a definite college town kind of place, which is odd given how far away from UF it actually is. I would expect to find a place like this across the street from the university, not nearly three miles as the crow flies (which with Gainesville traffic equates to a 20 minute drive). read more

We ordered a build-it-yourself pizza, large, and there was plenty for the three of us--brought some home, too. Very helpful/friendly service. Then, we walked around the grounds admiring the mobiles and other artwork, the flowering plants, etc. Finally, we got into the gift shop which is filled with retro items! Top shelf ZA: bar none. After 50 years of eating pizza this one makes my all time top 20 globally....and that is a lot of pizza! A very tasty offering of local craft beer as well as large volume producers. A nice selection of toppings and lots of choices for both meat and veg heads. This is a Gainesville staple that my friends and I used to visit often while we attended UF over a decade ago. It's comforting to find out that it's as consistent as it was during our school days, when we had a chance to revisit. This place was hipster before it was popular. With amazing decor, a hollowed our VW van outside, and plenty of old car bench seats for waiting, this place is quite unique. They are known for their pizza, specifically, their deep dish. It's not a traditional Chicago style deep dish, more of a thick pan pizza. Definitely brings back nostalgia. The deep dish does take about 40 minutes to cook upon ordering, so patience is needed. Let's just start this off with the fact that I haven't had pizza this good in a very long time. It's a very artistic establishment with beautiful walls, corners and floors throughout. The employees were friendly and the bathrooms were clean. The slices are huge so you'll have your fill with one slice if you go that route. Affordable and lovely. I definitely recommend. They also have a covered garden in back that resembles a greenhouse almost! Being a huge art lover, I was in heaven. So glad I got to explore this spot. read more

You can't go to Gainesville and not visit Satchel's. Their pizza is the best in town. The salads are my absolute favorite. Mixed greens, apples, almonds, feta and more, topped with their homemade balsamic vinaigrette. So GOOD! You can even purchase a bottle in their store, which by the way is awesome! So we were told to check this place out and I am glad we did. First offI feel compelled to tell you it is CASH ONLY. They have an ATM machine on site that charges $1.50 and the fee goes to charity. The lunch special was great! $7.50 for a house salad and slice with 1 topping. The salad was wonderful. Red and green leaf lettuce. Cucumbers, apple, tomato, sunflower seeds, almonds, pecans, walnuts and house dressing. The pizza slice was a huge NY size slice that was filling. The atmosphere was eclectic! Stained glass, a bus with tables and even art. The dessert menu was brilliant. A price card and all the dessert pictures are on a view master. Great food and reasonable prices. After seeing a good flick, my son took me to Satchel's & OMG, we were seated immediately at a freshly cleaned table. We had our drinks served & our order was taken promptly. The restaurant looked so nice & the atmosphere was lovely. Being "VEGANS" is always EZ, he had salad & pizza with seitan while I ordered the MAMA calzone with black olives, mushrooms, onions & spinach. I think this place is overrated but might give it a second shot to see what the hype is about. Pizza lacks substance.. it was greasy and too much sauce in my opinion. Nothing to rave about and it caught me off guard because everyone seems to love this establishment and it's become a gem here in Gainesville. I've had plenty of pizzas everywhere and this one just falls short. The salad is pretty good and refreshing but I wouldn't come here just for that. Homemade lemonade was delicious though. I don't know if it was just that I came at the wrong time for pizza but was left dissatisfied. Also the servers have this complex of superiority where they just give off vibes that they are better than you. We were sat down quick but now acknowledged presence or friendly greeting . She just slapped the menu down quick and went about her way. Not once were we treated by our server other than taking our order and never asked how the food was or if needed anything. We had to wave another server from another table for stuff and our check as well. The apple crumble cheesecake was mediocre. I don't understand this super high rating people keep leaving. I am visiting from out of state and have heard about how great satchels is from multiple people. Sure, the building is unique and there was live music. Sure, there is quite the kids play area. But that's about it. The pizza was not great. I blotted a napkin full of grease off of my slice of pizza. The drinks were gross, I had a fountain drink and just poured it out and had water. I got a salad which was good but the box was so full it was difficult to mix the salad. It was so loud and so crowded inside. There were wild kids running all around unsupervised. The best seating is outside practically in the parking lot, which is also extremely crowded. It's like a grown up chuck e cheese with some alcohol and neat decorations. read more

3.5 stars. I like Satchels, I really do -- but I don't come here for the pizza. Don't hate me but I think their pizza is overrated. I enjoy the salad and the atmosphere. Their salad is the perfect combo of ingredients and you must add the feta to it. Their homemade dressing is addicting! The small is big enough to share which is nice plus. It also holds you over for the extremely long wait you endure for your pizza, even if its just a slice. I do really like that they offer a widespread of toppings that you can add to your pizza. But it seems every time I get pizza here its just average. The pictures always look better than what I receive eating here. I don't know if I just happen to catch them on a off evening(because I've really only gotten pizza here a handful of times), I've just never been impressed. I feel like I have given their pizza chances and unfortunately it's just not for me. The atmosphere captures creativity upon the use of recyclables, which I love! It's definitely a cool and unique place!! Great for kids because there is so much to look at. I like getting a beer and just walking around and looking at everything. There is so much to look at, you'll always find something next time that you've never noticed before. WOW WOW WOW! I tried both the traditional pizza and the pesto pizza and man am I happy that we were feeling a little experimental and went with the pesto because it was AMAZING!! I had the pesto pizza with bacon, sausage and ham and it was probably one of the best pizzas I've ever had. The pesto is homemade and it was so so tasty and the pizza dough was so crunchy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside and it was just amazing. We also tried the traditional pizza with red sauce, steak and onions and again the dough is perfect but this one was a little heavier on the sauce but STILL amazing. I unfortunately didn't have a chance to try to calzones but with the pizza dough being so good I can only imagine how good the calzone would be, so I will be back! two thumbs up from me!
