Was here waiting for the line to go down today for a coffee and was eating some snacks from my trip to Milford Sound. Staff informed me I couldn't eat food from outside the place. I said I was waiting for the line to go down. The staff member said "what line?". I said 5 minutes ago there was 8 people in line so I sat down. I was informed that I could not eat food from outside. So I left without purchasing a coffee and caramel slice, and won't be back. Classic kiwi hospitality at its best! Also! I am kiwi born and bred. ahah. I have travelled extensively. Don't care if the business responds with a comment or stating/standing by the "no food from outside" rule. I was going to buy a coffee and a caramel slice. I had some other food from across the road (the supermarket). Woman was rude, snarky at my response and told the kitchen staff. Popped in for a coffee on our way back to Queenstown, and the cafe was very busy! Although we didn't stay long, we were impressed with the variety of pastries and food available and enjoyed both our coffees. Would definitely stop by here again if we're ever in the area. read more

We ordered some coffee, scone, and focaccia with pizza toppings (I think). We decided to eat outside since it was a nice day. The food tasted good. Sorry, i was hungry and food was so good I forgot to take pic before I dug in. Eggs Benedict here with thick, flavorful bacon & it was delicious! I loved the toasty bread it was served on and the hollandaise sauce was definitely homemade. The cappuccino was perfection, and if you're able to sit outside under the fabulous tree--bonus! Prior to heading to Milford Sound, my group wanted a proper lunch. There are limited cafes in the area, so Sandfly was at the top of the Yelp list! We were immediately greeted by an employee who explained how ordering worked; first you order at the register, then your meal will be served. I got the vegan plate (unsure of the exact name, but it was one of many veggie options), which was filling. It came with grilled tomatoes, potatoes, and mushrooms - basic foods that were prepared deliciously! I do believe the pricing is a tad bit expensive, but it's a solid choice to carb up before a hike. The cafe itself was very cute and was decorated with NZ maps, mountain ranges, and quirky signs. Also, the main dining area has a BEAUTIFUL open window that allows for a gorgeous view while you're eating. read more

DELICIOUS food and drink, and despite the fact the place was packed and the line going to the door, we managed to grab seats and didn't have to wait long at all for our order. The Belgian waffle was incredible--the right blend of crispy and chewy and all that. Husband enjoyed the full traditional English breakfast, except wasn't a fan of that way of cooking the eggs (too fried around edges). The place was not terribly noisy, considering how many people were in there. And I loved sitting at the low table up against the window. (My tall husband, on the other hand, found it less enjoyable. Our innkeeper recommended this spot for lunch so we decided to give it a try. It's best described as a bustling cafe serving breakfast and a variety of sandwiches and meat pies. We opted for the chicken quesadilla and a couple of drinks. While not exactly a Mexican quesadilla, it was still very good with plenty of chicken and a nice pesto and was served with some type of sour cream-like stuff (a bit sweeter, thinking it was clotted cream) and some avocado and a small salad. Most every table including the 10 or so outside ones, were all filled. The food is brought out to you (order and pay at the counter), and it came out pretty quickly. A perfect spot for lunch. 2.75 Both dishes were bland. We got the steak sandwich- should have been cooked longer and sliced into smaller pieces. Each bite I took needed me to cut each piece w my teeth. Ladies if you're on your first date, definitely pick something else. I couldn't count how many times I had put salt on the steak to season it. Chicken salad- bland and dry. I first visited the Sandfly Cafe for lunch back in 2014. This month, I was back for breakfast. The food and service were just as good as I remembered it. I had a veggie burger last time (it was still on the specials menu). This time, I had the veg stack, also a very good choice. I will be back again the next time I'm in Te Anau. read more

Amazing breakfast at this little cafe! It's off-season, so a lot of breakfast options were closed, which made for a busy restaurant, but totally worth the wait. I had salmon Benedict and husband got the big breakfast - and big it was. Sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns, toast, and broiled tomatoes. He loved it and my Benedict was excellent - lots of fresh salmon and everything cooked perfectly. The lattes were top notch as well. They've also got lots of prepared sandwiches and pastries you can pick up to take to Milford Sound. Kudos Sandfly. We'll likely be back tomorrow! read more

Had veggie breakfast which was brown or white bread ( I preferred the brown) with 2 fried eggs on top, very flavorful fried tomatoes, pile of seasoned sautéed spinach, sautéed mushrooms, and 2 nicely crispy triangle potato cakes. We didn't get to spend too much time here but it looked like a super cute and locally owned coffee shop. Their breakfast looked pretty good but we were running low on time so we just ordered some coffees to go. My husband ordered a latte and I went with my usual Chai tea latte although I was tempted to try their butterscotch latte. But I figured it would be too sweet so I stuck with chai. And I'm glad I did because the chai was just the right of sweetness. Normally I order the small size but their small was really tiny so we both went with the medium which pretty much felt like the small sizes we are used to in the states. I also asked the employee for some utensils for the breakfast we had ready and they were sweet and gave us plenty to use. If we are ever back in this small town we will definitely visit this café again and make sure to make time to try their breakfast! read more

Gorgeous cafe, excellent coffee! This popular and atmospheric cafe has a very tempting display cabinet full of delicious looking home made goodies. Unfortunately breakfast was included in our accommodation and we were never around at lunchtime so we didn't get to eat anything but we went there a couple of times for coffee. Ok, stayed around here the last few days. This place is the best thing in Te Anau. The cauiflower sandwich with bacon is just out of this world. I got it with 2 eggs on the side. Very filling. Folks were super nice. Cherry brownie was heaven. Normally i stay away from all the calories but the brownie was just beautiful. Quite a simple menu with both all day cafe-style breakfast and brunch options. We had the Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon as well as the pancake stack with bacon and banana. The Eggs Benedict was very enjoyable - the highlight was the smoked salmon... super moist, flavorful, and super generous in terms of serving size! Highly recommend this. Stopped by on my way back to Queenstown from Te Anau Downs for coffee. I ordered a mochachino and an almond croissant. Their coffee and pastries were pretty good. Despite the fact that they were pretty busy, the service was decent and the order was ready relatively quickly. Seating seemed to be a little limited, but it's a good spot to stop at. read more

I had a very nice fruit smoothie for $8 NZ and nice cauliflower & bacon frittata w/ salsa (sounds weird, tasted great) for $10 NZ Wife had a beautiful tossed salad with very nice bread on side for $18 NZ - probably too much for a smallish salad (my only complaint). The food here is good but the service is incredibly slow. I went up to the counter and ordered corn fritters and two of the treats in the window to go. I got my two treats (obviously, because they are premade) but then I was waiting and waiting for my meal. About 10 minuted later the cafe started to fill up and they were getting busy. I had a bus waiting for me so I was getting worried about being left behind so I asked when the food would come out and they said "a large group came in before you so they are backed up". But almost no one was there when I ordered, it was only after I had been waiting for a while that the place started to fill up. But its fine, I waited another 10-15 minutes. Then I saw that my ride was getting ready to go and so I said "I will need a refund because I have to go" and they suddenly gave me my food. I just think its unprofessional to so that to people. The corn fritters were good but I thought the other treats werent and I thought the people were kind of rude when I just wanted to know when Id be getting my food. read more
