That old cliche is…read moretrue: You really could throw a stone on Mackinac Island and hit 10 fudge or ice cream shops. (Is that a cliche? It should be.) And if you don't like fudge or ice cream? Well, you're S.O.L., my friend. Luckily, my kids like ice cream, so we headed to Sanders because it was basically across the street from our hotel. They got a milkshake and a scoop of chocolate ice cream in a cup (their standard orders), and they were happy with their treats. But if you're looking for some other kinds of ice cream treats, they also have sundaes and things of that nature. Sanders also has a whole case of chocolate goodies, like peanut clusters, coconut clusters and pecan clusters (they seem to like their clusters here); chocolate-covered Rice Krispie Treats; truffles and peanut butter cups and toffee; caramel apples; and lots more. Oh, and fudge. But honestly, I would get fudge somewhere else that isn't a chain. There are lots of fudge places on the island. That's the thing: Sanders is a chain. But it's a Michigan chain, and originated in Detroit, so it's kinda local. Nevertheless, it's a good place to pop into to find something sweet to eat.

The popcorn looks decent, not sure if they would be good enough to last for my team next week though. Ended up grabbing a bite or of water and chamomile brewed tea with carbonated water in a can. $7.60

Doud's is a small market, but it has lots of stuff. As far as I know, this is one of the only markets on Mackinac Island. There actually is another Doud's down Main Street toward the ferry area, but it's a smaller grab-and-go convenience store, mostly with snacks and coffee. My hotel was right across the street, so I bopped into Doud's a couple of times during my stay, to grab a bottle of wine (they have a decent selection of wine), some candy for my kids, and some fruit because I needed to eat something fresh. The store is tidy and everything is arranged nicely. They also have self-checkout kiosks, so you can get in and out quickly.

Today, the store is known simply as Doud's Market and is run by Andrew Doud, the 4th generation owner. On Main Street, Doud's is the only grocery store in Mackinac Island's downtown, it's a beloved hub for locals and tourists. Today, Doud's is a modern grocery store, with a mom-and-pop feel, offering a wide range of food & household essentials. Shoppers will find fresh produce, fresh-cut meats, prepared items like whitefish dip, chicken pot pie, subs, homemade pizza, & salads. The cherry chicken salad & cherry chicken salad wrap are customer favorites. The store also features a variety of baked goods, along with a comprehensive selection of wine, beer, and spirits.

Delicious! Classic confection shop with that old timey feel…read more The store is located within downtown and is pretty large with high ceilings. Open area to see where they make their sweet treats. Staff are friendly and we chatted with one staff who said she has worked there season after season. Tons of fudge, ice cream, sweet treats, and freshy made waffle cones. I went with the pumpkin ice cream in a waffle bowl and it was heaven! The ice cream so smooth and rich. The waffle bowl was churchy and sweet. It hit the spot! Also got some fudge and it was just as delicious!

Kilwin's is a Michigan staple that I absolutely LOVE! I live closest to both their Ann Arbor and Plymouth locations, which are the ones I frequent the most, but often times they run out of their Mackinac Island Fudge flavor. I was so glad it was in stock on Mackinac Island AND that this Kilwin's was the largest Kilwin's I've been to yet! There are live fudge demos that you can watch, along with their entire "kitchen" area looking like it's out in the open so you can watch the workers hard at work! They have a massive selection of so many different sweets and treats - so many more offerings than I've ever seen at another Kilwin's too! It was a *treat* to see and always a MUST VISIT stop whenever you find yourself on the island! Love you, Kilwin's! :D
