Not far from St. Mark's, you will find this lovely church. It is loaded with art. The interior is lighted by beautiful, tall Gothic windows, and the walls are lined with some of the most magnificent works of art found in Venice. Masterpieces by Tintoretto, Angelo Trevisani, Giuseppe Salviati, Giovanni Bellini, Antonio Balestra, Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, Palma the Elder and Van Dyck - just to name a few. The most famous painting is Bellini's last Madonna with child and saints, painted in 1505. The painting was taken by Napoleon to Paris for 20 years when he plundered the city in 1797.
We paid € 1.50 each to enter the Cappella di Sant'Atanasio, which has Tintoretto's Birth of St John the Baptist, while Tiepolo depicts the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt in a typically Venetian boat. Both hang above magnificently crafted choir stalls. Behind this chapel you'll find the Gothic Cappella di San Tarasio (also called the Cappella d'Oro - the golden chapel), with impressive Renaissance-style frescoes by Andrea del Castagno and Francesco da Faenza from the 1440s. Under glass you can see a section of the original 9th-century mosaic floor. The whole place smells really musty and no wonder. Make sure you step down to the eerie flooded crypt, which houses the bodies of eight doges. read more
