I really wanted to learn about the haciendas of Yucatan and visit one as well while we were in Yucatan, and Hacienda Yunku really blew me away. Haciendas henequeneras were extremely important to the history and culture of Yucatan. They were agricultural estates for the growing and processing of henequen (a variety of agave that yields a fiber suitable for rope and twine, similar to sisal). Much of the wealth in Merida (those mansions on Paseo de Montejo) was from haciendas henequeneras. The hacienda owners lived in Merida and traveled to their haciendas for business, while servants on the estates lived as indentured servants on the estates. For a host of political and economic reasons, the haciendas declined by the middle of the 20th century. Many of the haciendas are now hotels, venues for events and weddings, or used for other purposes. Hacienda Yunku is a hotel, but you can also visit for the day (our tour guide arranged this). Our visit was wonderful, because the hacienda has so much to offer. There's a beautiful restaurant, where the staff served us a wonderful Yucatecan meal of Ensalada Xec, panuchos, and dulce de papaya. We also had a couple of beers. Then we wandered down to the cenote (natural sinkhole or pit of groundwater for swimming) on the property. The cenote was accessible by a series of staircases and completely covered on top by rock. We swam/floated for an hour or so, which was a wonderful experience (we had never been in a cenote without other people swimming nearby, so this was such a unique, special, private experience). Then we wandered up to their pool, which is gorgeous and dried off by laying in the sun by the pool. The grounds are gorgeous and worth exploring as well. The staff at the hacienda were lovely. So too were the attractions at the hacienda. It was a wonderful, relaxing place to spend a few hours of an afternoon on a hot day.

It n the lower section of the hacienda the rooms are converted sisal factory rooms. We enjoyed swimming in the lovely pool and unique underground cenote. The bat in the pool cabana area served several brands of beer and a limited range of cocktails. Our meals were prepared by the unfailing efficient and pleasant staff. The dining area under the portico lent a lovely atmosphere to the tasty Yucatan regional meals. Checking and check out were easy and uncomplicated. In sum, the Hacienda Yunku is a very comfortable place to stay.

It's quiet since we were the only guests for our last 3 days. We enjoyed the Bohemian Lair suite which had a full kitchen, nice seating area, king bed and huge bathroom with rain shower. There is a community kitchen and large dining area downstairs. The hosts were extremely accommodating since our flight landed in Merida at 8am, we arrived at 9:30am and were able to drop our luggage and headed for brunch. Alyssa texted at 11am and our room was ready! This is definitely a place to stay while in Progreso! Thank you, Alyssa and Christopher, for a wonderful stay. We are planning to return soon!

Phenomenal place!…read more My wife and I stayed here twice in September 2019. We came back because there's nothing better for the price in Progreso and it is SO peaceful and comfortable! My wife had to stay in the local hospital for two nights due to salmonella poisoning that she had gotten in Cancun two weeks earlier. We had already spent three nights here before things went sideways, and there was nowhere better for her to recover than here. Alyssa the host/owner made sure a room was ready for us and had someone meet us at the door for an early check in. The hotel is beautiful and tranquil, and Alyssa speaks perfect English and Spanish. It's almost like she grew up in Southern California. (She did, lol.) There is one large studio apartment style room and several regular rooms. The rooms and grounds are in the style of a large Merida home. The attention to detail is astounding. The entire place is maintained to U.S./Canadian standards. The fixtures, the decor, the inner courtyard, the pool. Plus, it is essentially an art gallery as well, with high quality art done in every medium and decorating everything. And it's all hidden behind an attractive low key building front. What a find! We paid $75US (off-season) through the hotel website. No TV's and no bathtubs. (But bathtubs are virtually nonexistent in Mexico anyway. Shame.) A/C in every bedroom and hot water always available. In this area those two things are NOT guaranteed. The hotel is away from the craziness of downtown Progreso, if that's what you like. No bar and no restaurant. Full access is allowed to the coffee area and kitchen. But restaurants and bars and tiendas, etc., are all within easy walking distance. The beach is one half block away. One more thing: The sounds are part of the stay! Soft classical or jazz or Sinatra is playing indoors, while a fountain tinkles and birdsong is played outside in the courtyard by the pool. (Oh ya, and the landscaping in the courtyard has flowers and plants all meticulously maintained.) Even though most guests are out early and all day exploring everything there is to do around here, if you get stuck like we were, this is the place!

The crazy thing about this particular one of the haciendas is that the food is also world class. Pro tip: don't miss the steam engine and note that the boiler is being lifted out of the old boiler room by the tree that grew under it. The boiler is so big that your mind might miss what it's really going on with it.

Calling itself "luxury" is a stretch. If you want the vibe go for a meal and view of the pool... tho it's not exactly the easiest place to get to. The road off the highway is rough and full of potholes. The restaurant is good however and the staff is friendly. The pork tacos are delicious. The place tho is odd. I'm not sure about the other Haciendas but this one could use a LOT of TLC. There are so many open spaces they could make way more interesting with landscaping, seating areas, and at minimum some lightening. There are a ton of very old areas... unused, and that's really the only thing to do to walk around and wonder what is all this old stuff for? But no context is offered, no history, unless you do the tour. It's frankly quite bizarre. If you want to completely disappear and feel a little rustic, and know you basically have your room, the restaurant facing the pool, and seating area facing big empty entrance to hang at - than ok, but I wouldn't necessarily call it tranquil and definitely not luxurious. The pool was dirty on one side, I never Saw one person in it, the hot tub was not hot, and we tried to walk to the secret cenote but there wasn't signage and ended up in a loop back to hotel. The spa service was top notch, absolutely 5*, thank you Fatima! It was in a room not in the cenote that gets advertised, as we were told right now there can be lots of bugs and even rats! The bedroom suite was huge with a hammock and an outside bath they filled for us that was lovely, the living room was pretty barren, they can use some art. The bed is comfortable I slept great. If you have kids please for the love of God don't come here. I cannot imagine how you would survive. We saw so many kids and cannot imagine what they possibly do with them at this property. If you are a writer and just need to go hide and write for a few days in the jungle then this could work. Otherwise I would not recommend. I'm Pretty open and flexible and have stayed many places... I just can't in good conscience tell people to go to this particular Hacienda unless it's for a specific reason.
