I was recently given an overlocker as a birthday present. It was bought from Ebay to save money but may have been bashed in transit because when I finally got round to finding threading instructions and cranking it up something inside was stuck fast and it wouldn't do a thing. No! It was too late to try to send it back to the seller so I bussed it into town and managed to carry the heavy box down to Sewing Machine Co. Despite the nice chap in the shop seeming a little confused by my overlocker's unusual malady he seemed confident he'd be able to sort it. He did...by the next day! I was very impressed! Unfortunately after a couple of days I realised there was still a problem, but due to the fact that repairs come with a 3 month guarantee I took the machine back and he quickly fixed it free of charge and was very apologetic. As I know from experience how mysteriously temperamental sewing machines of all kinds can be I didn't hold this against the repairer and was just grateful to have it back and working...and for £30 I thought it was definitely worth it! Sewing Machine Co. also sell machines at reasonable prices, and sell a range of sewing essentials such as thread, needles, scissors and other bits and bobs. They also sharpen scissors - there's nothing like a freshly sharpened pair! On top of this they also have an amazingly impressive looking embroidery machine and can embroider clothing if provided with a design...large and complicated designs can be rather expensive but small motifs or words are very affordable. Overall I think Sewing Machine is a great little shop and essential back up for all sewing machine owners who know how temperamental the things can be!

This shop has some quite fun fabrics with fluffy animal print, neon chunky fur, gingham, spots, stripes and a large stack of net in a rainbow of colours. M K Fabrics also has a neat little wool section with a room of its own tucked away at the side. Fabrics aren't really organised into types so a browse around this shop may require a bit of a dedicated rummage, but prices are reasonable and the staff are very helpful.

B&M fabrics also earn bonus points for keeping their stock well organised and neatly displayed, which allows for easy browsing - other fabric shops in the market can have rolls of fabric stacked in slightly chaotic piles. Rather than just a counter you can actually step into the shop and browse the fabrics more closely enabling customers to get a good feel of all the fabrics on offer. The staff always seem to be very helpful but are also happy to allow you to browse. The prices here are probably about average for fabric shops in Leeds. If you don't find what you're looking for at B&M fabrics there are at least two other fabric shops nearby.

I explained my idea to the fabric lady and she took the time to discuss and demonstrate how I could make a wrap-around skirt and how much material I would need to do this. Anyway, it is quite a large store... I didn't even make it upstairs because I had already spent so much time downstairs. There are a couple of clearance sections starting on the right wall near the tills. And... fortunately the first clearance section is yarn (or knitting wool). Unfortunately the yarn isn't labeled properly so it is difficult to figure out how much the yarn costs. That wouldn't have been a problem if there had been some staff to help, but there was only one lady on the tills who may have been training and I'm not sure where everyone else was. One of the reasons I took off a star. However, the selection for any craft you happen to be undertaking is amazing. They have supplies for baking, knitting/crochet, model building, felting, cross stitch, sewing, art supplies, etc. This could be a very dangerous store for my wallet ;). The other reason I took a star off is that the yarn section was a bit bare. It looked like a 3 for 2 sale, so probably why the shelves were bare, but still it didn't provide much for variety. And it was difficult to figure out what was part of the 3 for 2 sale, but again, there was no one to ask. However, the one item that I was quite impressed with and will have to investigate on another visit is the "yarn" made out of jersey material called Boodles. They also had a nice selection of books/magazines for crochet. Typically there are loads of books/magazines for knitters, but not crocheters... so this was a nice surprise. However, there were not a lot of choices for crochet hooks, especially for Tunisian Crochet, but I will probably inspect the online inventory to see if I can order some of these. When I did go to check out, they had added another staff member to the tills because there had been a line and what I really appreciated was when the staff member checked the lot numbers on my yarn and asked if it was ok that the lot numbers were different. Those of you who crochet or knit know how important lot numbers can be, however, because this was off of the clearance shelf and I did have a look and as far as I could tell there wasn't a huge amount of difference, but it is a variegated yarn so I think the changes in the colours will actually be hidden. Overall it is a great stop for crafters!

They obviously haven't discovered Bon Fabrics in Urmston Town Centre- perhaps one of the last of a dying breed. This is a proper material shop where reams of cotton and voile are cut to order in front of your very eyes. And there are buttons!! Now, buttons are the bane of my life; I don't know why but if there is a button around, you can guarantee that it will pop off in my presence. Maybe I am the David Blaine of the haberdashery world? Perhaps I just magic them off clothes by mind control and without laying one manicured finger on them. Well whatever it is , I ALWAYS need buttons and Bon Fabrics comes to my rescue. There is something strangely comforting about standing around yards of fabric and bales of wool. It might be a latent repressed memory of being a contented baby stuffed into home- made matinee jackets and bootees by my talented Aunty Joyce. Who knows? It is certainly not my intention to patronise the older generation at all. Knitting is now a Hollywood craze and a birdie tells me that Gwyneth is a bit partial to a knit one pearl one. Bon Fabrics does not just cater to those in the twilight of their lives, it has a whole array of fancy-dress outfits for children and adults. You can barely move in this shop at Christmas and Easter time when harassed mothers are forced to make outfits for their little darlings' school plays and Easter Bonnet Parades. I particularly like Bon Fabrics at Halloween when my inner vamp ( or vampire) starts bearing its fangs. Whether I require a wig, facepaints or other accessories, this shop will have it. Service can be quite slow as the ladies who run the shop like to give their undivided attention to their customers for as long as it takes, and no disrespect, but it CAN take a long time. This can be a touch frustrating when all you need to buy is a yard of ribbon for 50p. I would not say that the owners are brimming over with amicability either. They are serious sewers who rarely crack a smile. However, I have returned here again and again- well I always need buttons. P.S. try saying haberdashery when you have had a few drinks- I seem to say have a daiquiri. Odd that!

This a gem of a shop wheither you are totally hopeless at sewing(like me) or a real expert(nothing…read morelike me!) you will get fantastic service, great advice(if needed-never forced on you) loads of fabric and patterns to choose from and a very friendly welcome. I am rubbish at anything crafty but occasionally need things from here. The level of service and welcome is exactly the same wheither you are buying something like wunderweb by the meter(I do this a lot!) or fabric and pattern for a dress. The lady that owns it is really helpful and listens to what you want rather than trying to sell stuff that you don't need. For a few years they have also had fancy dress items to buy such as hats, chest wigs(!) funny wigs and wings. That side of the business seems to be expanding but the fabric side of the shop is still going strong. This is a friendly, well run business with a real interest in helping their customers.
