Spoke to the salespersons and store manager who kept ducking my calls, and they simply insisted that I had lost the item. I would have happily admitted it - after all, it was the smallest item and had no reason, being from London and holidaying in Germany to try such a cheap trick. So always check your items before leaving the shop!
