Never mind the coffee…read more You are here for the garden. * * * Cafe Bravo is the museum cafe for the KW Institute for Contemporary Art. The KW Institute is small, so changing shows means shutting down the whole museum. But the garden stays open and that is all you care about. Don't expect fancy flowers and don't expect sculpture. Expect sunlight on whitewashed wood, greenery throughout, and the kind of gracious entryways that make for good watercolor paintings. The paintings in the institute itself might be nouveau-nouveau. The indoor restaurant for sure is nouveau-nouveau. The courtyard itself is old school. I spent hours there soaking up the rays and soaking up the visuals. The coffee was decent enough not to be a distraction.

Der uerspruengliche Kommentar: We went there yesterday, Sunday afternoon. Within 45 minutes we could not get a glass of wine and a ginger tea served. Waitress works totally unstructured, she takes orders from last arrivals and forgets the rest. We ask her several times to take our order. The busser was busy to flirt wit visitors instead of doing his job. Total lack of supervision. At the end we left without consuming anything because we did not got our beverages. Would I return? Certainly not. Service-free environments have little attraction to me.

Built in 1887 it is a witness of the amazing history of Berlin - from Kaiser Wilhelm to WWI, the first democratic German government in the 1920's, the Depression, the rise of the Nazi party, WWII, the East/West divide of the city, and unification in 1989. Throughout the years, the Wintergarten kept on playing and hosted famous actors and artists ever since. Putting history aside, what you can expect in this traditional Berlin theatre are variete shows, and the usual magician also stops by every once in a while. All shows are in German but if you focus on something more dance-oriented you should be able to follow even if you don't speak the language. The venue is small and intimate, with a table area near the stage, and an upper seating area. You can get dinner downstairs while the show goes on, and the upstairs areas are being served by waiters. Should be. When I was there service was lacking. No waiter showed up, apparently they were understaffed. Shows are quite expensive (50 Euro plus). Hit or miss, I would probably not be back.

We had registered on the guest list and another friend had bought bottle service and invited us. Naturally, we were excited. However, when we got to front of the line (which is split in two for some reason) the younger bouncer told us we "looked too young." Confused, we held out our IDs. We are all of age in Germany. We asked him what the age was for entry. He asked us how old we were. One of us said 20. He paused, and said the age was 21. We weren't poorly dressed, we were registered in advance, and were going to be joining a friend with Table Service. After that, though, I doubt I'll ever want to go to this club. Pretty lame and rude.

It's hard to give a rating here as it's a very a-typical place. The tavern space is very cool and worth the visit alone. But don't go and expect American food- it's definitely German food (bratwurst and potatoes etc). I wouldn't go against but it was interesting to see. Apparently on their evening shows it can get quite rowdy.
