Why spend £2 on a pack of sponges when you can spend 2p? And why spend a tenner on a dish strainer when you can get a perfectly decent one for £1 max? In these hard-up, borderline financial depression times it pays to be frugal. So I go here for nearly everything. It may be cheap, but it does the job and I'm not complaining; although my broom did break into three pieces after its third use, but hey, whatever, that kind of stuff is expected when you only paid 40p for it. I am, unabashedly, The Big Discount Store's number one fan.

The woman who runs the shop has good taste, but a terrible attitude. When I walk in I can feel her eyes pummeling through my shoulder blades. When I turn around her ferocious gaze locks into my eyes with unrelenting force and all of a sudden I feel besieged by uneasiness and I don't want to shop in the store anymore. I want to flee. If you're courageous enough to brave the ferocity of the hawk-eyed charity shop general woman then you're in for good vintage bargains. The clothes, especially the shoes, are worth the possible threat of attack. Unfortunately, the shoes are in vintage sizes, meaning that they generally run quite small. If you have monolith feet like me (size 10 or more) you may be out of luck. The hats are hot though, and unless you have a gigantic dinosaur head (which would definitely be sad to say the least) you may find a fedora cool enough to make the Rat Pack quiver in shameful defeat at their cool-factor downgrade.

They only thing that fails is the price, £15 skirts, £17 for dresses, it just seems a little steep for a second hand store. Also, can you haggle in a charity shop or is that rude? I went here with Larissa D and we questioned this as the skirt she wanted to buy was missing a button. Anyway, it seems to be that Brixton's hipsters have forgotten about this gem as it stocks some awesome 60s and 70s clothing, leather bags and quirky shirts. I just wish it was a little cheaper!

But when you go in there? It's all just the same. Hint, though: Hit the branches in posher areas of town, and they're filled with new/tagged suits and much nicer stuff. This is definitely noughty-Lambeth-style shab. Which is OK. I just want the store to live up to its claims.

Their layout feels quite empty, with the odd clothing rack and stock shelf littered about the shop floor. Search around though and you're bound to find something good: I found several FCUK and Guess tops for a real steal. To be fair, you will never know if something dodgy happened to the people wearing those clothes, summated in the fact that their clothes now lie in a charity store somewhere. But even if you never wear them you can always take pleasure in the fact that you're helping someone who needs it way more than you need Guess clothing to begin with.

Maybe I'm spoilt by the Dalston Oxfam, 99p per record and an abundance of Country gems. It's not bad, it's just not a bargain. The selection is better than average but it's not worth a trip out here. I love chazzers I really do, they're all about reusing and recycling, both things I love. If you are looking for 80's and 90's pop vinyl, you'll find it at cheaper than music shop prices here.
