First, I'm astonished that Yelp has hardly any reviews for Tewkesbury, and when I searched for an Italian restaurant, the closest it could manage was Cheltenham. And then there's the fact that on another well-respected review site (begins with Trip, ends with Visor) more than two thirds of 160 reviews rank Salerno as excellent. That's odd, because while there's great atmosphere and the staff are efficient and welcoming, the food is really, sadly average...and grossly over-priced for what you get. I have noticed before that expensive restaurants tend to get better reviews, and know from experience that in England especially (I'm just back in the UK after more than 30 years in the USA) you often don't get what you pay for, but people are reluctant to admit they were robbed! In this case, there were nine of us in our party, and no one had food to rave about. Worse, it took almost an hour for our orders to reach the table, and the excuse we got (after a while, apologies tend to wear a bit thin) was "One of our chefs is in Italy"! My seafood pasta (£15 and worth maybe half that) was overcooked, over-sauced and skimpy on all but pasta...and the lasagna two of us ordered (£9) was a disgrace. As I said, great staff, good atmosphere, and the place was packed on a Thursday night. But no one pays for smiles and buzz in a restaurant, it's good food at a fair price that makes us want to go back. Salerno's off my list, for sure. Disappointing. read more
