I want to love Sakura--I really, really do, since I'm a fan of sushi. However, Sakura always disappoints. Their sushi rolls are miniscule--I swear they've been getting smaller and smaller over the last four years--and you have to shell out a good amount of money to get full on them. The teriyaki is hit-or-miss; I've had an occasion where it was too salty to be true (honestly, it was kind of pitifully impressive). I have had some good cuts of salmon sashimi, though, so I'm quick to recommend that. One priceless tip: if you're a fan of sake bombs, grab a bottle of sake and a six-pack of Sapporo (Campus Fine Wines is just a block away), request a table in the back room as well as some beer glasses, sake glasses, chopsticks for everyone, make a dignified mess (while having everyone else in the room stare and smile at you jealously), and have a fantastic time despite the lacklustre sushi. read more

We came here for sushi on a trip to Providence, as we haven't yet found a place in VT that can live up to the crazy deep-fried, cream cheese-filled, spicy mayo-topped traditions of our Bay Area roots. Sakura. Honestly, I'm not sure why people love this place so much besides the prices are good. The sushi is mediocre and the service is just ok... They are often asking to take my plate away before I am even finished. I usually only go to Sakura when my favorite providence sushi place (ran zan) is closed or too busy. The floor seating is pretty neat, as well as BYOB, but it often gets loud in here... and doesn't provide for an intimate dinner experience... Overall, I give Sakura a 3.5. My absolute favorite sushi place in Rhode Island. Their sushi is not only delicious, but it can be inexpensive as well! I often take advantage of the Maki Lunch, where you get 2 maki rolls, 2 pieces of nigiri (tuna and salmon), miso soup and the house salad for only ten dollars. That's right, 10 dollars for all that food! It's definitely enough to share or for just one person if you're that hungry. The service isn't all that great but it's gotten much better in the past couple years. Also, their chef's specials are amazing. I really dislike writing a review after reading multiple negative reviews, but let's be honest, we all read up on restaurants before we go nowadays. In my opinion, I really was not impressed with the quality of the food, the level of service or the cleanliness of the establishment. I came here here for a group meeting, in which we had reserved a more private room, in order to spare the rest of the customers from our boring discussion. Upon arrival, I was impressed with the some of the atypical seating, the cushions and the low set tables. However, on a closer view, there was dirt, grimes, food wastes on the ground and no visible trash cans. The staff was very rushed, and constantly seemed overwhelmed and snappy. Even with a higher threshold of tolerance for Asian restaurant services, this was quite atrocious. As for the food, I was quite underwhelmed. The cost of each sushi plate seemed higher than normal, and the quality of the fish did not strike as the freshest the ocean state has to offer. We had eel, salmon and tuna rolls, as well as the shrimp tempura rolls. The shrimp rolls were ok, but too battered; the best rolls were actually the sweet potato rolls, which is quite disappointing for a sushi joint. Finally, the edame...which is hard to screw up was unsalted, tough and still lukewarm when served. Overall, I'm happy that this place catered to our event, but I do not foresee myself returning to this place in the near future. Sushi spots are like pizza joints to the common eater... they are all pretty great. But this place is not. The staff was so rude for no apparent reason. Then when it was time to order, forget about a typical conversational language barrier, the server and I couldn't even communicate over the names of menu items... and trust me, I was trying way harder than she was. She was actually visibly pissed I didn't speak Japanese it seemed. Finally the seaweed salad tasted like the seaweed that has been washed up on a beach for a week (and yes, I do know what that tastes like thanks to a few wipeouts in my time). Why is the service here so terrible?? I only went because a group of my friends were going. The sushi is average, better at Nami. BYOB is the only benefit and there is no shortage of those places around anyway. The staff seems so unhappy. When my friend made the reservation she told them we would need separate checks and they said ok. We get the check and it is all one check, but she divided it up to show what we each owe. That is NOT separate checks, because what happened is what always happens with a big group. We come up $13 short and no one knows where and then people have to add more money than they owe, because it was still all one bill. Cafe Zog or Coffee Exchange, Angkor or Sawadee, SAKURA or TOKYO... Seems like Wickendon/ Fox Point is the Noah's Ark of restaurant spots. It used to be a toss up for me when it came to my favorite sushi joint within walking distance of my humble abode. I've finally come to the conclusion that Sakura is the clear winner for me. Clean, great presentation, courteous staff, fresh food, and always inviting. You also can't go wrong with BYOB... Prices are decent and you don't get the overwhelming fishy stench and general grime factor you get with Tokyo. Don't just take my word for it... Head on over and try them out for yourself. Sakura is the best sushi restaurant I've had in PVD, hands down, and clearly my favorite so far. It's BYOB and if you forget to bring your own B, there's a liquor store down the street to ensure you can imbibe. The fish is always fresh and their menu is extensive. Highlights are the crab rangoon (which are always a good idea to start with), spicy tuna or salmon sandwich (cut into 8 pieces, instead of 4), tuna avocado or salmon avocado roll. The waitresses may not be the friendliest, but they get you what you need when you need it. Even though it's not the best sushi etiquette, their spicy mayo is deliciously spicy and sweet, I always ask for it on the side for an extra bite. Their specialty rolls are also good, but unfortunately I rarely steer away from what I already know I love! You can sit on the floor (so fun), booth, or table. There's even some seating on their porch. On a Friday or Saturday during dinner time, expect to wait a little bit! read more

In the wilds of Sakura Restaurant, there are no rules. Traditional reservations here are meaningless, as Sakura operates on the oldest reservation system in the book - The Caveman system, where you earn your seat by pushing through the crowd and plonking your Alpha hunter ass right where you want it. If someone feels you have taken their seat unfairly, you can settle the dispute with a technique called "a fight" wherein one of you renders pressure via fists unto your opponent's face until they either take your seat or go to sleep on the ground. But that's enough about their massively meaningless system for getting a table. Sakura is a great BYOB and I would surely return to this place if I find myself in Providence again. It makes sense that Sakura is very popular, as the sushi is great and it is extremely cheap for the quality. The Loveboat for Two is a massive amount of delicious food and it is at a price point that simply makes no sense. Bring your own booze. They give you complimentary tempura green tea ice cream. My boyfriend and I come here for sushi about once a week. The "Hot Babe" is to die for. The sushi rolls are consistently good and reasonably priced. The servers will ease up on the attitude once they get to know you. If you need to be doted on by your waiter, then this is not the place for you. Accuracy and promptness are what matters to me. I don't need the waiter to be my best friend. And seriously, can you imagine waiting on privileged college kids for a living? It would be enough to disgruntle almost anyone. read more

Here is the dilemma with Sakura...it's kinda dirty, the staff's manners are non-existent, and I'm pretty sure they don't have air conditioning in the summer (so stuffy!)...however, I can't deny they roll a nice piece of sushi. The menu is fresh and tasty with plenty of specialness like rolls including perfectly ripe mango, nicely done tempura, and a decent miso soup starter. Definitely better than Haruki. Just writing about it makes me want to forget it's only 4 in the afternoon and go get dinner early... So what's a girl to do? First off, gorgeous interior. Very peaceful and tasteful. Came here late the other night. The Hibachi was closed (closes at 11) but the dining room was open (open til 12 on weekends). The waitress was so sweet! Since it was a quiet evening the kitchen did us a huge favor by cooking our dumplings half steamed, half fried (I like them steamed, my boyfriend likes them fried). Thank you! I tried the Red Lotus which is a Vodka, Sake, Pomegranate drink- very good and a great price too (under $7)! I had the rice noodles with beef and my boyfriend had the pan-fried noodles with beef- both were excellent, excellent, excellent! These were also great prices- both entrees were under $10 each. It is possible to rate something on yelp with 0 stars? Worst service ever. I never rank anything on yelp unless I feel it is super good or super bad. There is no question where this place falls. A group of 6 of us went Thursday night and all 6 agreed this was the worst service ever recieved by any of us. Sat for 2 and a half hours before getting our food. Asked to put in our order no less than 7 times and was told "no". Apts came after 45 mins, completely cold- we sent back. We are not pickey and were find to hang out a while and drink- but this was WAY above and beyond. Once the food finally came, it was OK. We were greatful to eat, however were not intestested in ever coming back. A few of the people in our group were regulars. WERE being the key word. This place is NOT WORTH IT. Tried to speak with someone about the service, they did not care to hear any feedback. I have never experianced anything worse in my life. This place is great! They serve sushi that is excellently prepared and cheaply priced. I've been many times. Plus it's BYOB, so you can drink and eat cheaply. We brought in a box of Franzia once and ended up doing "Boxed-Wine-Stands". Anyway, the service is good. It's definitely not 'friendly' in the "Welcome to Chili's, my name's Debby and I'll be taking care you tonight!" way, but it's very fast and responsive. I had the Akira roll yesterday, and it was so good that Sakura warrants an updated review! The dragon roll I've had before was really good, but dragon roll is usually really good so i didn't think anything of it. But the Akira roll, man, that's the best sushi roll in all of Providence. Hands down! Shrimp tempura, avocado, and all sorts of goodness! Will have to try some nigiri and sashimi soon to try the raw fish, but I'll probably just get Akira again! read more

There is really only one reason to keep coming back here and it's the ahiru (duck) and cabbage salad appetizer. The dressing used in the salad is perfect and goes really well with the little pieces of duck in it. Easily made the meal for me and it wasn't even sushi! Imagine that! The sushi itself is not anything to write home about. And the service, as stated in other yelpers' reviews are in accordance during my experience. Waitresses with hawk-like eyes, waiting for you to finish your meal. I did however like the fact that we got to sit upstairs on their tatami mats. If you like sushi, you should really visit Sakura. Don't be shy and get intimidated by the curt service of the wait staff. The food at Sakura is much better than any of the other local Providence Sushi restaurants. Their specialty rolls are diverse and have something for every one. They have ample sushi options for vegetarians also. (their sweet potato rolls are to die for) Their prices are very fair. We have visited Sakura so many time that yes, we've had meals there that were so-so where the chefs were obviously having an off night. But we've also had some of the best sushi meals we've ever had in R.I. at Sakura. The positives outweigh the negatives at Sakura. And they have a BYOB policy too. A nice added perk. read more

Let me first say that sushi is like manna from heaven to me. If I could eat it everyday I would. I love it that much. And I really do feel that Sakura is a quality, solid sushi restaurant in Providence. Definitely no frills inside, and I would say that the service, while prompt, lacks in the personality department. But kids, they do have this...it is byob. I personally love being able to bring in a bottle that costs as much as a glass and a half of wine on most menus. It makes me feel somehow smugly practical. So there is that. They have the traditional, standard rolls, sashimi and handrolls. But they also have some speciality rolls that are pretty fantastic. While I am a purist to some extent and love the traditional - spicy tuna, yellowtail, eel, etc, I have to say that I enjoy the rolls they have with names like the Sweetheart Roll and the Rock 'n Roll. The last couple times I went here the experience has diminished each time. We had a few orders mixed up and/or come very late, and on 2 occasions my friend's portions were quite small, especially for the price. We always go in a group of at least 4 or more so that could be the issue. I have had a decent time when we were there with another couple but that was a while ago. The service really needs some work. On the plus side they have really great soups and salads that aren't too pricey and the sushi is pretty good. You can choose to sit at a table or go to the other side and you can sit on the floor which is kinda cool and different, but gets uncomfortable after a while. read more

I love sushi, it is my favorite food and I can be a quite picky. There is a ton of places that serve sushi within a 45 minute drive, but I only like a handful. Sakura is one of them. Let me hit you with the negative first - service is fast (impressively fast on a busy weekend night), but not friendly. I mean, straight up cold and borderline rude at times. Think Clint Eastwood in Sudden Impact - that vibe. Luckily I was hungry and the food came out crazy fast so I didn't really care. Now on to the positive - which is most important - the food.I ordered fried eggplant, a sushi roll special that came with a soup and a salad. My friend ordered some hand rolls, and some specialty rolls. Eggplant appetizer was very good - nice and crispy. Miso soup and garden salad were also very tasty - I liked the ginger dressing on the salad. I enjoyed everything so much I ordered some sashimi. Fish was fresh and flavorful which is already a huge win. I finished off with some green tea. I wish I knew it was BYOB, it would make my experience even better. It's good sushi on Wickeden at affordable prices. I hate those bougie sushi joints that charge $12 for rolls that should cost $5. Sakura is good about their prices and hopefully it stays that way. When I went to this restaurant with friends, they gave us a table that is too small to eat for three of us. We asked if we can change, but they refused at first saying that there is a reservation for other tables to be filled soon. But it was really small, so we insisted and finally moved. But the staff seemed really angry, and it was really evident. And we found out that only one table was reserved out of all of them. Sat at the sushi bar and had them throw me their favorites - can't recall what I had due to post dinner liver olympics, but generally say that I had a great experience, will return and will take better notes next time.
