You know the story. You leave the club with your friend after a great night of dancing and flirting. You walk home full of laughs when suddenly you pause and turn to each other and say: "Is that a naked man running?" And viola you are lying on the ground and when I came to my friend was passed out with a bloody mouth on the street. Thankfully some good Samaritans took control of the situation. The ambulance man was fantastic and so where the nurses and doctors as they got a great kick out of the fact that a naked man ran us over. The receptionist was awful, extremely rude, unpleasant woman that got an attitude with my dazed friend because she had the temerity to spell her last name for her: "I can spell you know!" Of course I lost it with her and told her to learn some manners. A fascinating insight into the Irish psyche as the place was populated with mainly drink related incidents. Something very socially vacant about that. I wonder will Diageo pick up the bill? My friend is grand yet my ass has a huge bruise on it which makes sitting rather annoying. Beware of a naked lunatic running the streets of Dublin who has a tiny package. Complete eejit. read more

This hospital is desperate I thought the Mater was bad this is worse, The wait times are a complete joke you could be waiting 24 hours or even longer and waiting all night. Myself and other People needing urgent care left sitting there for hours on end falling asleep on the seats. Junkies using drugs in the toilets you could get the horrible smell of it in the waiting room. Came in suicidal etc they gave me prescription for useless depressant tablets and told me to get on with it, refused to diagnose anything, Sadly I won't come back here the level care for suicidality and obvious mental health issues is incompetent and useless. The staff can see people sooner there often sitting in the office doing nothing anyways. The mental health services in this country are so bad, been in hospitals all over dublin and even discharged either given a prescription or or help lines sheet and thats it thanks to fine fall and finnana gael ruining the country, All in all very disappointing, clearly government is at fault. Won't set foot in here again the wait times are terrible. read more

Absolutely horrifying. My 24 year old son went to the ER because he had lost feeling in his feet and the numbness was moving up his body. He was released twice. The doctors said it was stress! We flew him back to the states where he was hospitalized at Mass General for a full month and diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a very severe condition that could have ended very different if we had not gotten the help we needed. Not only did the staff misdiagnose him but they were beyond disrespectful. He was disciplined for taking an ambulance (although he couldn't walk) and was told that he was "25 not 95 and he needed to walk out" when he asked for a wheelchair. I could go on.... but do not go to this hospital if your life depends on it! PS I had to leave 1 star to post the review. read more

Following an unfortunate accident in college one day, I had to accompany a friend here. In an ambulance, which was cool, though my joy and raging through the streets of Dublin with the siren blazing was tempered somewhat by the condition of said friend. Either way, considering her arm was ballooning out to the size of a hockey ball, they did see her fairly quickly and took really good care of her. However, James' is located in such a lovely area that the waiting room tends to fill with drunks and homeless people fairly quickly of an evening. Not that I have an issue with them per se, but when I'm trying to avoid the puddles of vomit on the floor, I start to get a wee bit grossed out. read more

Thankfully I've just been here as a visitor rather than a patient, but James has been really well redesigned and refurbished. I got to know it quite well as my granddad was here for over a year. They have quite nice areas in the entrance Atrium for food as well as a newsagents and gift shop, which at least acknowledges that sometimes people spend a lot of time here as 'visitors' and need access to some amenities. I have to stay my experience of the staff was very positive and they were extremely helpful and good. Can't say the place is perfect. Granddad did get the MRSA bug twice! But how much of that has to do with the hospital and how much of that has to do with the nature of viruses I couldn't possibly say. the nurses and doctors are great, well most of them. But the HSE is a bloody disaster and a drain. Its like they throw good money away after bad. Heat on full and windows open yet no money for surgeries, equipment and lives saving drugs. The cafe's are over priced as is the parking and the staff are charge extortionate prices for both. Where the hell they are going to park when the new children's hospital is built here. Not sure if there is a methadone clinic here but around the front door is a bit scary at certain times of the day. Even the staff advised not to go out there to sit. Im here a lot as a patient and will be for the next 2 years. read more

10 hours of waiting in the emergency room and we haven't seen a doctor... Staff couldn't care less you stay here waiting all night long, and there isn't even a place to drink water. When we asked after 8 hours of waiting if we should just go home and come back later they said it was useless because we should see a doctor shortly. As far as I can tell this hospital gets a bit of a bashing in the reputation stakes. I had to come here once for an x-ray and I have to say my experience was absolutely fine. More than fine actually. I came in with no appointment and a letter from my doctor and I didn't have to wait longer than an hour to be seen. The whole thing was painless (aside from my minor injury!). They contacted my doctor subsequently with the results and that was it. Having said all that, a friend of mine was at the A&E here recently and had a pretty awful time. The hospital itself is great but the Accident and emergency department is a disgrace, came in with an abnormal heartbeat, spent 8 hour waiting and in that time only saw two nurses and no doctor, I was told there were 3 people in front of me 6 hours in and 2 hours later there are still 3 people in front of me. considering I was well past worried as it was the horribly rude receptionist made me feel 10 times worse, that said after another 2 hours the second receptionist was much more helpful read more

I made an account just to rate this place. Absolutely terrible and unacceptable service. If possible pick a different hospital in need of an emergency. We arrived to the EMERGENCY at 11pm, only to be left as two fools to sit around and wait throughout the night with ~10 other people for 8 and a half long freaking hours before getting any kind treatment. Be WARNED - you will have to pay in advance 100e. After that you probably won't be willing to "just leave". After that, the doctor disappeared, we asked for something for pain because it progressed throughout the night quite a bit. The doctor simply put a smile on his face and said "fine". Of course they had a shift change at 8 so the doctor went away and we didn't get any painkillers for the next 2.5 hours. We again sat and waited and nobody seemed to care even one bit. After asking a dozen more times, we finally got a pleasant nurse to give us some painkiller (probably after a doctor finally approved it). If they think this is an acceptable behaviour and service for an EMERGENCY I urge them to try and experience something like this on their own skin. Joke of a hospital as all the Irish health system in fact. After waiting almost 16 months to get surgery done for my inguinal hernia I finally get a date for 25th of May , 3 weeks before that I receive a letter from the hospital informing me that my appointment has been cancelled and the new date for the surgery is Friday 15th of June. I say to myself ok no big deal , things happen, unexpected situations do appear , at least they gave me enough notice time to arrange things at work. Finally the big week arrives , very excited to get this thing done as is interfering with my personal and professional life , got things prepared at work for my recovery period and so on. So here comes the unbelievable part , Thursday 14th of June at around 5 o'clock in the evening (just 15 hours before my surgery appointment) I get a call from the hospital informing me that my appointment has been cancelled again due to an emergency . I was assured that I'm going to get the surgery done by the end of this week and will get a call Monday to confirm the exact day and hour. Of course I haven't been called by nobody from the hospital on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and not only that but nobody answers the two phone numbers for the day surgery centre. Now I'm stuck at home , can't go to work because they already have an replacement for me for the next 3 weeks and without any update from the hospital. Also would like to mention that due to hernia complications, earlier this year I have been taken straight from work to A&E in ambulance, where after 6 hours spent there on paracetamol I've been sent home because I wasn't an emergency and there was no need to operate me yet. They even suggested that some "tight undewear" and "a pair of socks" placed in the spot where the hernia comes out might help keeping it in place and diminish my pain..... St. James Hospital - March 2011 I went to St James with a friend who had a serious ear infection. The reception staff at A&E were brilliant however when she was called to the nurse we saw a different light. My friends broken English described the pain best she could. The nurse was fast & led us out the door back to the waiting room and said a doctor will be with us soon. 5hours passed & the place got fuller where it was obvious other patients were seen to first. My friend was furious & knocked on the nurses door & explained she was waiting 5hours. The nurse ONLY at that moment said her illness is not serious enough to be seen, so it could most likely be another 5hours or longer as everyone else will be put ahead of her! Appalled and VERY upset to only getting this information now - we left very very upset. Had she had known (by the nurse staff) this information that they were not going to deal with the situation by thinking it wasn't serious (but not communicating with us about it-yet having us wait serious length of time) -It might have been a little MORE PROFESSIONAL & COMPASSIONATE approach with communicating with the patient long before the 5hours had passed. Regardless of the medical issues for patients coming into an A&E...EVERY INDIVIDUAL should be treated with respect, dignity, & equality. There were people behind me who appeared in pain & confused as to what was going on and were waiting 6hours and no one came to inform of an update. I wonder was there compliment not serious either?? Either the doctors were dragging their heals from the other end however the nurse's might have informed some patients of their illness not been serious instead of taking up an person's entire day sitting in a waiting room. Perhaps there needs to be a refresher course for these nurses, on learning how to communicate with the patient properly, serve the issue with some compassion at least and NEVER carry a patronizing attitude towards the patient. All patients can feel vulnerable regardless of the extent of the injury/illness etc. read more

While traveling in Ireland with family, my mother had a heart attack during the early morning hours, around 1:30 or 2 on Monday. The ambulance personnel were wonderful. She was taken to A & E. & was well treated. The rest of us were in the waiting area where a large sign informed patients that there was an 8 to 10 hr wait for minor problems. Several people with whom we spoke had been sitting there for hrs. The place was dirty with no restroom. We were told to return to our hotel & they would call us. They did at 6:50 am & we returned. She was still in A & E. She finally was moved around 7 pm to the coronary care unit. When we visited on Tues. afternoon she was still in the same clothes that had blood on them, I assume, from the IV lines. We asked that she be given a bath & a hospital gown. When we returned at 7 that evening, nothing had changed. We finally asked for a gown & cleaned her up ourselves as best we could. On Wed., she was transferred to a 6 bed ward. I really could see no difference between these 3 locations within the hospital other than the lack of monitors on the ward. Absolutely no privacy since there was only curtain dividers in each of them. The last ward was mixed, so my mother was in there with 5 men. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning. Also her buzzer for the nurses station did not work in the ward. She had to rely on the other patients if she needed anything. After a discussion with the finance office we discovered we were paying 1,075 euro a day for just the bed. I realize our hospitals are also very expensive, but you at least have a private room. It was not a good experience at all. The personnel seemed indifferent & unattentive. It just felt dirty & unkempt. I used the public restroom in the lobby just once. It smelled nasty. If this is national health care, I don't want any part of it. read more
