The new fence around the church campus

Nothing is more inviting than a fences around the church. Yes, that was sarcasm. And now the church looks like a jail. I have been going to this parish since I was a child. Ever since this new pastor came in, this community and parish has changed and for the negative. Fr. Bart would always preach of how we are part of this community so we should all have a say. But everyone I know have made suggestions. But all of these suggestions were met by Fr. Bart with "no that's not a good suggestion." When we try to explain and clarify a bit so that he can even consider the suggestion, he would say that "no, my decision is final. I'm the pastor and you are not". How can a leader of a faith community say that line? I almost left the faith entirely, but thanks to Jim Soltau and Fr. G who convinced me to stay. Now I heard Fr. G is leaving???? He hasn't been here a year and I heard Fr. Bart requested his reassignment. (This is hearsay, but the fact of the matter is that Fr. G hasn't been here for a year yet and his last day with us is the end of June.) Something needs to change because I cannot find myself supporting this parish and its leader any longer (though at this point, Fr. Bart is not a leader, but a boss of the community) So many friends and family have left because of him. And soon, my family and I will be like them.

More of 2.5 stars. It pains me to give a church such a low rate because of one visit. I just find the whole experience leaning towards watching a show with a overbearing ring master rather than a church which is celebrating a baptism. It was part seeing a scene in Lion King's "circle of life" where the monkey had to carry the cub for the whole animal kingdom to see but here its a baby who was more of being brandished by the priest to the whole parish. I felt offended for the child and awkward for the parents unless they were in that sort of thing. There were two priests officiating the mass however, the parish priest over shined the presiding priest by taking over the homily, which by the way discussed how to use the new app of online giving by the parish and somehow failed to discuss about the baptism which is what the mass is about. But enough of the priest who spent about 15 minutes just to garble something incessantly during parish announcements. The nice church building and the calming mural along side the resurrected statue didn't feel genuine because someone seemed to be more like a showman than a man of the cloak. Nuff said.

It started before I could remember because my parents came to COTLR back in 1980 (the year I was born), but I honestly can say that my journey had to start then! No doubt about that. I was 5 years old when I received the best gift that I could ever receive--the gift of the Holy Ghost. I just remember wanting to be baptized because I loved the water. But through that desire, the Lord saw that I needed something more. It was a weeknight service, and I was sitting in the second row by the band because I love to sing and hear the music. The sister I was sitting with began to see I was really singing the song and asked me if I wanted a friend that would never leave me. Being five at the time I could relate to friends, I wanted that more than anything! She began to tell me to call on Jesus, and I did from the bottom of my heart! ( that's all it really takes is calling on Jesus from a genuine place) before I knew it, something happened! My little hands were in the air, and I had received the Holy ghost! It felt sooooo good. I will never forget it! To think that there was an environment for me to be able to experience something from heaven from God himself was amazing! Then to top it off, that same night, they were having a baptism, and I was able to get baptized that same night! I will never forget that! Some 41 years later, I'm still thankful and striving at the Church of the Latter Rain! I have been through many things in my walk with the Lord. I'm grateful to say because of the dear people and the church and the Lord; I came through everything Stronger and daily I can say I'm changing for the better! If you're looking for a Change, looking for Love that comes from a real place, I Admonish you to try Jesus and come and see for yourself that God and his people are real! I'm just thankful to be a part of something so great! I have so much peace and joy! I had to share!

Amidst the lockdowns and social distancing, it was difficult finding a local church community when I was accustomed to that kind of support within a collegiate fellowship. After reaching out to a middle school teacher, he recommended Risen, a church plant that was about a year and a half old. The first time I visited, the church was meeting outside at the staff parking lot area, with everyone spaced six feet apart. After I was handed a radio with some earphones, I sat on a folded chair while seeking shade from the school bus. The sermon that morning was on hospitality and the transformative way that Jesus frees us from our selfish passions, changing us to be more gracious and compassionate towards others. I can attest that I've experienced this firsthand as I look back on the last four years here. I was not the most approachable person and was quite guarded and reserved. I even had some disagreements with people while bearing much bitterness towards them. Instead of being open and honest, there were a few times that I considered leaving this church in order to run away from those problems. However, people still went out of their way to invite me to late-night dinners and hikes, allowing me to share life with them. Despite the hesitations I had, I ended up staying time and time again, being able to fully experience that transformative power of community. God gave me the courage to eventually meet and talk with people about some of my issues. What catastrophic expectations I had before these talks dissipated as I really started to see in my fellow church members the Imago Dei, the image of God. Once I began to notice this bitterness dissolve after a couple years of attending Risen, I pursued membership and later started serving with the Connections Ministry (welcome team). Rather than being a consumer who was only taking what was being given, I was able to start giving more of myself and pour into others. Although it is not a perfect church, my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ really embody that sense of hospitality that was preached about during my first visit. As our mission statement is to "Know Christ and Make Disciples," I have seen how God has really changed their lives as they seek to glorify God and use both grace and truth to truly love others. It has truly been a blessing to witness the growth and milestones our church has experienced over the past few years. We've gathered in many places--from the pastor's house to the staff parking lot, the Student Union downstairs, and later to the multi-purpose room upstairs. What began as a church plant has now become a particular church, marked by the ordination of elders last year. Looking back, I'm grateful I stayed through the discomfort and the hurt, because it is through those very moments that I experienced some of the deepest healing and growth.

Looking for a church and committing to a church isn't easy. So when I was prayerfully looking for a…read morechurch to commit to and live life with, I was looking for a church that: 1) preached the Gospel and 2) lived out the Gospel in their community. I've been at Risen for 7 months now and I am thankful that God has called this church into existence. First, Risen teaches and preaches the gospel. It's all about the gospel. The sermons usually go through a book in the bible or a topic that is centered around one of their Core Principles. Risen's 8 Core Principles are: Scripture, Sabbath, Prayer, Community, Gratitude + Generosity, Compassion + Justice, Calling, Mission. Second, Risen is a community of believers who live out the Gospel. The people at Risen are passionate about Sharing Christ and Making Disciples. That's our church's mission (I can say "ours" now). So there are all kinds of ministries that make it easy to Share Christ and Make Disciples - from our Community Groups that are extremely welcoming and unintimidating to our relational building fellowship events. So you can invite your friends to multiple different avenues depending on where they may be in life. If they're ready for a Community Group, there's quite a few to choose from where they'll be extremely welcomed, cared for, taught and encouraged with the Scriptures, and prayed for. Risen is a community that has your back, prays for you, and is there for you. If they're looking for something a little less official, there are several fellowship events that they can check out. For example, there is a Run Club at 8pm so parents who want to come out, after putting their kids down, can come. Our pickleball and park hangouts are family friendly, not only limited to pickleball players or "young(er) adults". We have hikes for those who want 'more of a challenge' in terms of exercise and incline, and also family friendly walks to encourage families with babies and toddlers to come out. At the end of the day, Risen is thoughtful about having biblical fellowship that considers people of all life stages. As an adult with no kids, I feel like I belong when I hang out with families with young toddlers and babies. I also feel the same when I spend time with other adults who don't have kids or are not married. But all of this is extremely intentional. It's all intentional to Share Christ and Make Disciples. Also, as a newcomer to the church, I appreciated the effort made by members to serve the church. Most people here really care and love this church. This was very encouraging and refreshing to see, which stirred up my heart to serve. A couple cherries on top: Risen has a good form of communication at all levels. The leadership cascades down really clearly why they do everything that they do-in their newsletters, Sunday announcements, to their ministries, and informal conversations. There's trust because there's clarity, and everyone is on the same page. Risen incorporates a good mix of hymns, christian contemporary music, and newer christian songs (thank you, David)! Risen does a real good job of blending the historic Christian faith with the modern world. If you're reading this far, I'm not sure what you look for in a church. Come check us out and worship God with us. By God's grace, I felt like this was a safe place for me to be myself, open up and be vulnerable with others. God calls all His children to worship Him together as a church - so come through!

It is such a joy to see the pastors put so much time and care into preparing God's Word for us each week. And even more encouraging to see them living out the Word so faithfully. I have so many great things to say about NLCC, but I'll try to narrow it down to a list of things that I have personally been blessed by: * Discipleship - It is strongly encouraged at this church. I have been discipled for over 2 years now, and it has been such an edifying experience. * Community Groups - Every Friday we are able to spend time with others over dinner and a Bible study lesson. This has been an amazing way for us to get to know other people in the church much more intimately. * Men's Ministry - Every month I have the opportunity to spend time with the other men in the church. We usually go over topics/struggles that pertain specifically to men and discuss how we can strive to grow in these areas. My wife would say the same for the Women's Ministry as well! * Serving - As a smaller church, there are tons of opportunities to serve and get plugged in. I have had the privilege of serving in the AV (Audio Visual) Ministry and the College Ministry extensively. On top of all these ways to get plugged in, I'm also always so grateful for how much this community cares for and loves one another. It has overall been a tremendous blessing to be a part of this church!

Well, for starters, Sundays begin at 11am and our Church is a non-denominational self-functioning traditional Christian Church, or part of the E.F.C.A. We believe in God, Jesus as His Son and the Holy Spirit as the Trinity and the death and resurrection of Jesus on the Cross for our sins and eternal Heaven and life with God for the saved. There are light refreshments available on campus at Church on Sunday mornings (lemonade, water, coffee, tea, donuts) and three main buildings A, B, and C; B having a recently renovated children's unit. The English ministry is in building A, and it usually goes a little something like this: 1. Praise and Worship, 2. Sermon by the Pastor, 3. Prayer and Announcements, 4. Excusal and buildings C and B also include Mandarin, Filipino, Deaf, Telugu, and youth services as well as Special Needs Bridges Crew. I personally love going to a Church where all are welcome, no matter your walk with God, whether doubting, fledgling, there is no clear-cut Christianity in my book! You either are for God or you're against Him. Because God loves me so much He sent His Son Jesus Christ, born of Mary who was a virgin and the Holy Ghost's power and He really is my Savior, Messiah, Savior, Light of my Life, Light of my World, and God gives me the strength to carry on in a burdensome world. We can ask for anything in Jesus' Name and if it aligns with God's will for us, He can make it happen! God loves you!! There is nothing you have done, said, thought, nothing at all that can't be erased at the Cross at Jesus Christ's blood on the Cross, He defeated death and rose again 3 days later so we can spend Eternity with Him in Heaven! That, my friends, is the good news of Christ Jesus. That is our Gospel and our Good News. Thank you, community, family, for fellowship, for loving and praying to Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, Jesus, let's keep us all accountable and dig into God's Word, the Holy Bible not because we are forced to but because we want to. Thanks for the grace, mercy, compassion, love, faith, thanks for everything! See you Sunday!

The kids ministry is awesome. My kids absolutely love going to church every Sunday (which was not the case with me growing up!), and have special bonds with the teachers and friends they make here. Most importantly they learn about Jesus every week and surprise me with how much they learn. It should be noted that there is no live preaching here.
