Dropped by here on a rainy Saturday afternoon on my way back home to Los Angeles from Northern California cause we were craving some Vietnamese. A great spot to drop by! Street parking and a small parking lot shared with a few other businesses, friendly staff, and lots of seating. Boyfriend and I ordered the beef salad in lemon sauce, which was just the right amount of lemon in the sauce. It was both light and refreshing. And we ordered the chicken fried rice, which was delicious. It was not as heavy as your typical fried rice, and it was just what we were looking for and didn't even know it. Sweet lady which I think was the owner? Service attentive but food wasn't a five star unfortunately. House special noodle(pho) portion was really small--literally and it's called "regular" on the menu. Just put bunch of bean sprouts in mine to make up for the lack of portion. The broth is also much sweeter than a typical Pho. The pork egg rolls were fine, but hardly tasted any pork bits and had lot of shredded carrots. The Bahn Mi is great--and you get a lot for your money. A good value! My friend had a vermicelli dish that was delicious. I've tried the Vietnamese coffee and it was quite bad... tasted like it was made with water from the aquarium. May have been a one-off thing, but I'm too scared to try again. It's a quaint dining spot, and they've done a lot to make the inside pleasant in that way that older aunties do (think embroidered table cloths, little fountains on the table). For Bakersfield, this place is pretty good. It has a nice decor, with pressed bamboo waynescoating all around, and it is clean an well kept. Modern colorful spot lamps hang. There are nice pictures on the walls. The servers are polite and attentive, but not intrusive. There are no sauces on the table like you would fine in Westminster or San Jose. If you order Pho, they bring out the Sriracha Toung Ot and Hoy Sin sauce with your condiment dish. I asked for a small saucer, which is usually found in on of those all purpose stainless dispensers with chopsticks and soup spoons. Not here. This sort of lends a certain elegance to their approach. More personalized versus mass production. The Pho was good, but it was expensive, in the $6.95 to $7.95 range, a couple of bucks more than in the Little Saigon joints. The boba drinks are more typically priced. The ice coffee a bit expensive. I had Pho Tai Bo Vien and Iced Coffee, and it totalled $13.03! The best thing about this place is the beautiful colorful figurines in the middle left of the room. These are the 3 traditional ladies of Vietnam, one from the North, the Central, and the South. All with a different style clothing, accent, and food preferences. I prefer a Vietnamese lady to serve me Pho that is a little tastier, and a little cheaper, wherever she may come from. read more

It definitely looks like an afterthought. "hey, the restaurant is finished, we have a nice front door....what's missing...? oh yeah, a bathroom. Hey, we've got this closet back here, why not?" Why not? How about because of the window that awkwardly lines up with your face as you sit on the toilet? What does that mean, you ask yourself. The menu is similar to all the other viet restaurants across the country. What makes this place a 4.5 stars is the sweet older ladies that work here and the terrific food they turn out. I asked for bun bo hue without the bun. Perhaps its b/c this is CA, but there was no judgment. I told here I wanted the large, and she told me that it was a waste of money b/c I was not getting the bun. She said that it was enough food for me. Yes, m'am! I asked if it came with the pig feet, and she told me it wouldn't go over well with the locals. Too bad. Hubs ordered the banh xeo, the lemon grass stuffed fried tofu, and the chicken curry bun. Of the three, he liked the tofu the most. The curry tasted like how I remember and the banh xeo was good, too. I really liked my dish, though. She did not skimp on the herbs, which comprised the bulk of my dish. Honest, good food. That's really all you need at the end of the day, and this place serves it. read more

I wanted to like this place because our server (the older lady) was really nice. Her english isn't the best but, she tried. We came on Monday night after Saigon Bistro was closed. This place completely empty...hmmm... Salad - The lettuce was turning yellow and tasted stale. Wonton soup - Bland. Fried wonton skins - Good. Then again, how can you mess this up? Vermicelli with BBQ shrimp - Vermicelli was sticking together, lettuce was yellow, too many bean sprouts, great BBQ sauce on the shrimp, and the shrimp was slightly overcooked. The sauce that came with it was blah. Curry chicken - I recognized the flavor immediately - it's the box of pre-made curry mix that I use at home. At least I attempt to add my own touch to the mix. They didn't even bother. Iced Coffee - It came pre-made so it wasn't as strong as I would like it. I realize that this coffee takes a long time to strain. I order it with the understanding that it's going to be a dessert coffee because it'll strain when I eat my meal. The pre-made coffee takes away from the experience. I came for pho and their pho choices were meager. What a disappointment. read more

Another successful Yelp recommendation! Don't be fooled: this place is tucked in the back of the shopping complex and there isn't a lot of parking right next to it, but it is very spacious inside. I highly suggest getting the small pho if you want to try anything else. I got the large chicken pho & my friend got a beef entree (I forgot exactly what), and while I really wanted to try it, I just couldn't fit anymore food. The pho is pretty delicious though. They provide an ample amount of condiments to add in, but the broth itself is amazing! I will admit that the chicken wasn't as shredded as I would have liked it. I live close so this is a decent option. There spring rolls pretty good and the pho is delicious. Not the best in town but in a good area of town. Once in awhile they give you free fried wontons as an appetizer but it's on and off so don't expect it. All in all decent spot for the location it would be a great weekend after hours spot if they ever tried. read more

One of my favorite places in town for lunch. Wife and the kids love it too. I'm a regular here. The owners know my family and me. My order never changes. I always get the No. 5, large (wonton soup). Not the best nor the worst pho however the service alone would bring me back here! The interior was ok. IMO, they need to replace the old, grey industrial carpet inside but hey! The restaurant seemed clean so that is most important. Our waitress greeted us with her mouth full - guess 3pm is lunch time for staff! She was a personable older lady, very cute and funny. I ordered pho (always a craving!) #12 which is shrimp with pork. I thought it would be the nice reddish pork also seen on the menu but no, it turned out to be the whitish/grey pork. The shrimp was great, the pork not so much. My biggest disappointment was that my soup came barely warm, not piping hot like the other one that came out to our table, the chicken pho. VERY tasty broth on that one. They must simmer the broths at different temps. The chicken was a bit tough but every drop of that soup was eaten up by hubby. Being a Bakersfield native, I'm always so proud of the city's effort to expand the culinary palate of its residents! That being said, Saigon misses the mark on a few of its dishes. The Vietnamese sandwiches are okay, a bit bland and the lemongrass chicken came out too salty. Hands down their best dishes are their curries. Not too spicy or heavy... very good. The service was excellent. The bathroom needs to be renovated and cleaned. It is always a bit awkward having to go through the kitchen and storage in order to get to the restroom. read more
