Fabric - In case you're curious what a typical Sunday Fabric gathering at Field Elementary looks like.

Fabric is "contemporary", but it isn't meant to mirror a mega-church experience, it's about engaging in multi-week conversations with connections in the community. I'm sometimes surprised the attendance at Field School on Sunday morning doesn't approach a thousand, because it's exactly the right type of spiritual community for this century. Joining a Fabric group is encouraged but isn't mandated. Groups meet every week or whenever you can make it. Most people choose to become part of one, because it's a way to continue to engage on deeper issues together over a cup of tea or glass of beer. Groups can help us engage with each other's lives at a deeper level but also allow focus to reflect together on the current Fabric conversation. Some have critiqued Fabric, labeling it as surface level, due to a departure from traditional church doctrine and related sermons. I'd argue on the contrary, that it's far from shallow, and rather the opposite. If it is important to you to have someone tell you what you believe about God or Jesus or Creation or Heaven, down to your last thought, then Fabric isn't for you. But, most of us aren't like that. Life isn't like that. Life is about pursuing hopes and dreams, refining our values, developing family and friend relationships, and asking curious questions, which certainly involves asking questions about God and what they means for us. As such, Fabric is simply about living that life in community. Fabric isn't a Church, but Fabric IS church -- For the Rest of Us. Fabric's invitation could well be: Come for the music, stay for the conversation. All are welcome here, EVEN those who identify as Christians, and many of us do. Your faith is important to us. But that goes for everyone who gathers with us. Every person who shows up is important to us, and we are excited to meet you. We want to hear what you are excited about, and we want you in the conversation too!

Some folks have very traditional church backgrounds, some have been deeply harmed by the church, some are neutral about church. We have couples where one has had very positive church experiences and the other is an atheist. What we have in common is a commitment to wrestling together with the big questions of God and the messiness of life. I've been part of the Fabric community for 13 years. Before moving to Minneapolis, I attended a church in Cleveland, OH whose pastor I loved and who walked through important life events with me (e.g. he officiated our wedding, baptised our son). However, with Fabric I've really grown in my understanding of and beliefs about God, Jesus, and the Bible, AND also about being human, parenting, relationships, community. Largely this is because of the conversations that happen not only on Sundays but also with smaller groups during the week. I am connected with so many caring, authentic, curious, good people because of Fabric.

As someone…read morethat wandered away from organized religion after high school (for the same reasons, many people reject faith entirely), I found myself longing for an authentic church community. I've met a great group of people not only studying and questioning religious doctrine through today's lens but also living their beliefs in earnest, as imperfect humans striving towards peace, justice, compassion, and understanding, and although on the fringe, still worthy of God's grace. Pastor Holly is very cool. She begins each service with a centering poem and stresses that "all means all" not only in word but in practice. There are now five different bands, so each week is a different experience with many types of music for you to enjoy from rock to folk and more, including one group that has a clogger! There are local coffee and snacks as well as an art table, and participation is optional depending on one's personal comfort level. Although the format is similar to regular church service, it takes place at the Hook and Ladder Theatre, is stripped down, casual, and "church" just really doesn't cut it. I've also enjoyed events outside of a typical church format, from sharing a meal or taking part in several book discussions. We've read about other religions, dissected "scary church words," even reading secular works that also have significance and talk about how our personal experiences shape our viewpoint. Coming up, we are reading "Red State Christians" by a local author, and I can't wait to continue on this journey with new friends.

I was visiting MN to officiate a wedding and being away from my own congregation I always try to visit somewhere else. Remember that this was one person's - a pastor no less - perspective and if you are looking for a church, you must give it more than one or two visits. Spirit Garage was a good overall experience and if i were looking for a community it would warrant a return trip or two. The things I enjoyed - The band was solid. Most bands do not pull off doing secular songs very well, but they were solid; - Leadership was diverse in terms of male/female; - Pastor was talking to this community; - Casual feel - Multigenerational - Easy parking - Theologically grounded Stuff that didn't jive with me - Where are all the brown people? I understand this is MN and might be why I would not move here, but there were only three non-White folks in the space of 70-80 people. - Hard to create talk back in a theater style setting. Everyone is facing forward so are not looking at each other. Again, one visit so check it out for yourself.

The soup suppers at St.joan are one of the things I look forward to all year long. We will not miss one of the six Wednesday night dinners if possible. I really enjoy trying all of the home made creations that other families share with love. There is always a mix of old world traditional tomato and bean soups and often a mix of something new and sporty like quinoa squash or tofu noodle. In recent years grilled cheese has been added and there is always the staple bread, milk, juice and cookies. Its much more than soup. It's also sharing time with our great community and making new friends. There is also a great line up of after soup prayer services and sing alongs that I really enjoy if I can get away from the kids!

From the outside, it reminds me of an old tv repair shop with stain-glass windows and a small parking lot adjacent to the building. It stands on the corner of Chicago and 38th Street, two very busy and infamous intersections, that have their own stories to tell. The inside of the church is small; two level. When you walk into the double door, there's a small entryway and then a room of many chairs and a pulpit that takes up the majority of the west wall. It's a modest church, with a congregation that is warm, inviting and friendly. Your greeted by ushers and provided with a bulletin of what's going on within the church weekly and for the month and sheet to give any prayer requests that you may have. Service: You're coming for the message, but I suppose the combination factor are the people as well, who help make up the congregation or who visit. The Pastor, Curtis Farrar, preaches a message that has passion and heart and knowledge, but he has an approach that makes him relatable and real. He seems to really care if you have a relationship with God and wants to teach you how to. They have prayer on Monday at 7pm, Bible Study on Wed at 7pm, Friday night service at 7pm, Sunday services at 9 & 11am. I'll be back!
