Claridad has written about it, many songs mention it, and it even joined Facebook. La Naza, a…read morechinchorro, a term to describe something like a net. So I'm guessing it catches everyone and everything that comes by. Located in Dulces Labios (AKA Sweet Lips Hills), La Naza is a family owned business for the past 60+ years and it has been axis of culture for the city of Mayaguez. Don Ramon, aka Jack Palance, because he is always spiffy and sharp, will welcome you and make sure you have the time of your life, treat you like family. He will also prepare some yummy empanadillas (fried turnovers) filled with fresh crabmeat (yeap poor little blue crabs he feeds corn for weeks and then boil them, is that considered animal abuse?) or shrimp with a homemade mojo (tomato/sofrito based sauce). Cold beers, simple drinks, fresh coconut water, and Anis/Clove Chichaito are waiting for you. La Naza honors our culture: art, bomba, plena, and family! You might also find Pita Marti wandering around... If you don't know who he is don't be afraid to ask...

If you haven't seen real Puerto Rican culture this would take you right there. When I come back to Puerto Rico I will stop by just to hear the great music and hang out with the great people there.

When we walked in we thought the restaurant was closed, but the bartender was around and told us to…read morewait for someone to come out. A minute or two later a woman came out and started naming what was on the menu (they had a wall menu in English, but we're out of some items). It turns out she was the waitress/chef. In broken Spanish, I told the woman I had a gluten allergy so we remained what I could eat that didn't have gluten. I was intrigued by her mention of octopus given that we were so close to the sea. The waitress/chef brought out a sample of ceviche octopus. It was so yummy!! The octopus wasn't rubbery at all. It had a good meaty bit and tasted like the sea. We both decided to have the octopus two ways. My husband had it as a ceviche w/ tostones and I had my octopus in a red sauce over mofongo. It was comfort food! The mofongo was hearty and tasted homemade. We also met an English speaking gentleman who was at the restaurant (role unknown) who gave us tips re: nearby beaches. The restaurant has a parking lot and a great view of the water. It was nice to have so much attention with wonderful home cooked food. If you are in the area after a long day at the beach I would recommend this little find.

AMBIANCE: Parking: Welcome to Old San Juan, it get get pretty busy - best to carpool or do public transportation. Seating: Indoor seating or private cabana set ups for groups. Room for a total of 100 people. Feels: Welcome to Old San Juan, a mix of touristy and culture. The spot itself is popular for locals and tourists. As for the space itself, what's unique about this spot is this place isn't just one bar. It's actually a series of connected rooms (about 6-7 different spaces), each with its own vibe - speak easy, dance, casual, house, live music and more! I'm surprised each room can contain it's sounds while maintaining its own energy. It feels like a speakeasy maze meets nightlife experience. Dim lighting, vintage touches, and just enough chaos in a good way. DRINKS/EXPERIENCE It was such a fun night, not sure what I ordered but there is an abundance of flavors as every room has different selections. But popular drinks if you're looking for guidance - lavendar mule, espresso martini, a classic mojito. They got the classic to your well-crafted cocktails. Some spots provide food while others is sip and chill or sip and dance. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Fast-paced but solid. Staff keeps up with the crowd and still manages to be engaging. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars! Good choices, reasonable prices, and a vibe like no other. As a gemini that can be quite indecisive, I enjoyed this spot - especially with its multiple options. This is more than a bar - it's an experience. A spot where the night can go longer than expected. TIPS: * Walk through ALL the rooms--you'll miss half the experience if you don't
