Their custom-made "course-books" are the best out of all the language books I've had to use so far. I would love to go back and continue with the next course, but am now living in Berlin. For some reason their partner, Tandem Berlin, in Friedrichshain, charge nearly double of what this Frankfurt branch charges.... (thought it should be the other way around). Looks like I'll be enrolling in a mediocre VHS course....

When I was looking into a language school, only the Volkshochschule had lower prices per hour and most reviews of these courses are pretty negative. One of my instructors explained that, although the prices are student-friendly, the instructors are also paid better than in many schools because the goal of the school isn't to make a huge profit for the owner. The morning classes are 5 days a week and the afternoon classes are 4 days a week. Each day is split up into two 1,5 hour sections with a 30 minute break in between. Typically, a different instructor teaches each session. I found the classes to be a nice balance between speaking and written assignments and, if you start from the beginning, their system for learning grammar and building vocabulary splits the process into managable steps. In my opinion, the teachers are excellent. They try to make the class interesting and enjoyable and are sincerely interested in helping you to learn the language. They are patient unless you make a habit of coming to class unprepared or unwilling to participate. Many also set aside time to come to the parties hosted by the school every couple of months or meetings outside of class in order to spend more time socializing with the students. Each week on Wednesdays and some Saturdays, there is a cultural program. On Wednesday, this is typically a visit to a museum or an afternoon exploring downtown Frankfurt or the Christmas markets. The Saturday trip is typically a day trip using Schönes Wochenende tickets. The only cost for this is admission to the museum or a share of the ticket price. I didn't find these particularly informative (it is not like a guided tour). However, it is a nice opportunity/excuse to visit a place you might not go on your own and an opportunity to meet people and practice casually speaking German outside of class.

It is under the care of the Moroccan Ministry of Religion and managed by the Moroccan Islamic Friendship Circle Tawhid Mosque Dietzenbach. Expansion and renovation work continued for many years. Now it is a beautiful mosque comprising a three-story high building with a striking facade and two towers at the front. In the basement, there are opportunities for ritual ablutions and a large room for festivities such as wedding celebrations. It is a nice and large mosque. The women's area has a separate entrance and has enough space to pray. Of many responsibilities, it performs common prayers, holds Koran readings, and teaches the Islamic doctrine. Members and non-members are given lessons and tutoring in Arabic, German and English. It pursues exclusively and directly non-profit and religious purposes and is financed entirely by membership fees and donations. The association strictly rejects using force to enforce the goals of faith. Finally, it is a place of peace and tranquility.

The school is nicely located right by the Marktplatz in Seligenstadt so there is lot's of stuff to do before or after you language class, which I will be joining at Sprachzeit. The school was having a "Schnuppertag" on saturday when I went by and after a few minutes ( all three teachers were already meeting with other prospective students) I was able to meet with the English and German teachers, the Spanish teacher was still meeting with some students. I have to say it was a very nice experience. We talked about my language background, what my need's were, was it for work or for pleasure, and how they could help. Not only were the teachers very very nice but the school was also nicely setup for what I could only describe as a very "welcoming" and "conducive" environment for learning. Sprachzeit-seligenstadt's theme is "learning with all of your senses" and from the time I spent in the school I got the feeling that I would be doing just that. Wow! I took the intensive German course here and was most impressed. I was a bit skeptical at first…read morebecause the school is quite small, but I quickly changed my mind. Most of the students were PhD students and postdocs with fellowships to study or carry out research in Germany. The teachers genuinely care that you learn to speak and communicate in German. They really took an interest in each student and helped the entire group to make progress. In the class time alone I learned a ton and the homework really was just extra practice for what we had done in class. I was in between levels when I took the placement test and teachers were willing to let me attend the higher class. At other schools, I've had to return to the lower level which is really boring when one uses the same book a second time. It was great to have my wish to try the higher level respected (if I hadn't been able to catch up, I could have easily dropped back).
