The homemade tortillas on the outside caught my Attention. I am not a fan of Mexican food, mostly because I grew up with it so it doesn't excite me. But man oh man!! The food was so delicious! We had menudo, pupusas, and carnitas. I love that they bring the veggies on the side and it's a big tub. That's my favorite part of pupusas. The menudo was full of flavor and meat! Lastly the service was quick and I'm not sure if she was the manager but she came up to us and talked to us a little about the food and business that's always a plus for me! Can't wait to come back!

Found this gem on here, when I was on my way home from Las Vegas. I ordered two plain carne asada tacos, the meat way so tender, juicy and full of flavor. The size was a little on the small side, hace I known how small they were I would have ordered four lol The tortillas were freshly made. We ordered some pupusas to take home, they were still warm when we got home. They were delicious I just wish they had more cheese. The restaurant it self was really dark inside, but we will definitely come back when we're in the area

First time here! Ordered carne asada tacos, side of rice and beans, and a pupusa mixta. Let's see how it goes.

Stopped at this place and tried a couple of things. I had a pupusa mixta, two carne asada tacos with a side of rice and beans, and their fruit salad drink. The place is nice and clean, and it was decorated for the Halloween season and was very cute. I started out with the fruit salad drink, which is a bit too sweet at the start, however after the ice melts and when you start eating the food the sweetness tapers off. Overall it was a very refreshing drink. The tacos were good, but there are other places with better tacos. The taco tortillas are handmade and delicious but I did find them a little too thick. The rice was not Mexican rice and given that this place is Mexican and Salvadoran I figured the rice is more like how they make it in El Salvador. The beans were very tasty and probably the best beans I've had in Bakersfield so far. The red salsa that the tacos came with was very spicy and delicious. The pupusa was very soft and I had a hard time tasting the cheese, Chicharrón, and beans in it. Maybe it's me, but I am used to them being toastier on the outside and a little bit thicker on the inside where you can taste the filling. The pickled cabbage was so good, I considered asking them if they would sell me some. I would go back to try other food, like their enchiladas and mole poblano to name a couple of Mexican dishes, and they have some Salvadoran appetizers that I would like to try.

This is the first time visiting this restaurant since they moved into their current location. First impression was that it was clean, the aromas were great, and our party was greeted kindly. The first thing my son noticed was that Rocky II was playing on the TV in the corner. The volume was actually pretty loud and we were seated under it. Though we love the Rocky movies, it probably didn't need to be so loud. Our server was attentive and communicated with us in Spanish for the most part, but she was Fluent in English as well. After some back and forth in the menu, my daughter ordered garlic buttered shrimp (basically a Latin style scampi) with rice and refried beans (which she didn't care for too much). My son and niece both ordered bowls of menudo, my wife ordered the Mariscada (Latin seafood stew), and I got the pork ribs in red sauce with rice and beans. The kids were pleased with the menudo, but commented that it wasn't their favorite, and each only ate half. My ribs were delicious, and my wife commented that the Mariscada was "okay." We did order pupusas and fried sugar cream filled plantain bananas as appetizers and everyone thought those were the best part of the meal. In the end, the service and appetizers were 5/5, the food and atmosphere were about 3.5/5, and the prices were solid 3s. 5 of us with no beverages came out to $87 including tax, and we tipped $13 to make it an even $100. Next time we come back, our family will remember the things they liked, and try something else they might.

My wife and I we were driving down California avenue in we said hey that used to be the old IHOP back in the '80s It was a Mexican restaurant so is that what the heck let's try it out we were pretty much surprised The ambience in there is pretty nice and quiet it's nice the way they got it set up Nice cozy little spot Food is on point food is very hot and I was very surprised with the flavor of the meat and the omelet The horchata is definitely on point Love that drink The service was on point also I mean it's not that big of a fancy joint but hey if you want to fill your belly with some pretty good food it's a pretty good nice quaint place to go You need to check it out

The pupusa are full of flavor, and 1 is just enough to fill up. Comes with the salsa and the cabbage. I ordered the mixed pupusa, which had beans, cheese, and chicharones. So filling. We also ordered the chicken tamale, and the masa tasted good and was soft enough to let the baby taste a little. Very clean, and our waitress was very attentive. She was a joy to speak to.

Food was delicious. They have homemade tortillas which are amazing. The service is great. There's plenty of seating available for larger groups. Nice place with a good variety of food options.

4 stars for the food, 2 for the service. The family was very nice, just maybe a little overwhelmed, because they didn't refill drinks, and it felt like a long time between being seated, getting our orders taken, and finally getting food. (We didn't wait for the check, just walked up front.) The food, specifically the pupusas, I will go back for. Delish. I could eat a bowl of the slaw and sauce they serve on the side. Hopefully the service will smooth out over time, and the food will stay the same.

Potato Empanadas! The flavor is all stuffed into this amazing fried deliciousness! It's a must try.

Flavor! Culture! Kindness! What a great way to spend Cinco De Mayo! We ordered everything and enjoyed every bite. But what made it better was that the good was made with so much love, and the owners and workers are so proud of that. We love the Beach front view and the great music too! Don't let this local gem disappear! Come try it out.

Small family owned Resturant . Staff very friendly ... spoke in both English and Spanish. The shrimp Diabolo was good but wish it was spicer. The plantains were delicious... warm and light and had some kind of cream in the middle .... Pretty sure it was some kind of desert. Very yummy... recommend these. The pupasas were delicious.. ordered one of each. Not sure which was what after covered them with the slaw and sauce. They were very filling ; warm; nicely toasted on the outside. Some of the best I had in Bakersfield. Wish the sauce to put on the pupasas was a bit spicer to ... just to kick it up a knotch.

We've been wanting to come here for almost a year now and haven't been able to make it happen until today. Came in with high expectations based off the reviews. This is clearly a family run establishment with what appeared to be three generations working at the time. I say 3, the youngest was really only about 7 but she took great pride in being able to pull her weight by delivering the chips and salsa to our table. Adorable! What I believe to be was the matriarch of the family was preparing the dishes in the kitchen while the daughter was taking customers orders. The table salsa was clearly made fresh that day and had great flavor with just enough heat. They offered a spicier option but we declined. We ordered some bean and cheese pupusas to start. They were cooked perfectly and were incredible! I ordered shrimp fajitas(yes of course I ordered shrimp). The portion was a little small compared to the chicken and steak my wife ordered. The shrimp were over cooked and the entree lacked flavor over all. The tortillas both corn and flour were also made from scratch in the restaurant and were very good. Next time I think I will stick to the Salvadoran specials.

FUN FACT: El Pulgarcito literally translates to "the little thumb" in English, which affectionately…read morerefers to El Salvador being the little thumb (smallest country) of the Americas. I first discovered El Pulgarcito on an overnight stay in Bakersfield while driving from Southern Nevada to Northern California. The food and service were so exceptional that I intentionally took another route through Bakersfield on the way home to eat here again. The woman working the front of the house in the restaurant's intimate space was thrilled to see me again and warmly welcomed me back like I was family. Her English is just as limited as my Spanish, so unfortunately, there was more of a language barrier the second time around because I simply wanted a bowl of chicken soup, which I requested as "Quiero sopa de pollo." She then asked me a series of questions I didn't fully understand, and I ended up with more food than I anticipated. Since I'm a pretty adventurous person who welcomes new experiences, I just pivoted to embrace the moment and enjoy my chicken platter. It was actually quite scrumptious! Food: 5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Ambiance: 3 Stars Note: I lived a combined 10 years in Baltimore and Washington, DC, home to the nation's second largest Salvadoran population. I used to eat pupusas quite regularly when I lived in the DMV. These pupusas were made with rice flour, and I can confidently say the pupusa and slaw combo here are without a doubt the best I've ever had! I even ordered one pupusa with a cheese and shredded zucchini filling, and I might have to find an excuse to take a day trip to Bakersfield again soon to get another order!!! :)
