Sorry to have to be the 1-star party pooper here, but…read more..
This place was a must stop according to our tour guide since this is where we would find Puerto Vallarta's version of Willy Wonka.
And she was right! The variety of treats and goodies are undeniable! And watching the gentleman up front make new batches was really cool!
The staff was generous in handing out so many of their concoctions, and it wasn't limited to sweets: there were different types of sweet and savory candies alike. I'm not really into these things, but I liked a couple of 'em that I decided to grab a few bags for home as well as to give away as homecoming gifts.
And it's not just limited to candy: they got plenty of souvenirs to boast about: shirts, shot glasses, magnets, etc...
Mom got a couple of souvenirs as well. As she prepared to pay, she asked how much a bottle opener is and was told a higher price than what was labeled. Her mistake: it was mislabeled, so she was apologetic about that. She wanted the bottle opener anyway.
At payment, there was some confusion about her change. I guess Mom paid with a big bill and they didn't have change, so she decided to just pay in US$. The cashier who dealt with her got confused because in the middle of that transaction, she was interrupted by her colleagues (asking some random questions, I couldn't decipher it at the time.) When she got back to my Mom, she couldn't then figure out what happened last. Mom tried to explain to her what happened (before the multiple interruptions) and it seemed like this cashier didn't believe her.
Then her facial and vocal attitude came through.
Like... wait, what?!
It took a minute when she finally got back on track and figured it out and told my Mom that she is still owed a few bucks for whatever she was getting (insert her nasty attitude here.) Mom explained that she already paid and that she (the cashier) was the one who didn't have change and suggested to pay in US$ instead and that it was the cashier who owed her (or she can give back the big bill in exchange for payment in US$ instead) not the other way around. Then the eye-rolling came through as she returned the money to Mom, then the mumbling, then followed by talking some kinda smack to another colleague standing next to her, and that just annoyed the ***bleep*** outta me.
Mom's disappointed look spoke volumes, so I advised her not to buy anything anymore, but she ended up getting stuff anyway. She sorta did a "don't let one rotten apple destroy the rest of the barrel" thing because after all, everyone else was really nice.
Well. She's a way better person than me because I, on the other hand, dropped everything I intended to buy.
(Cashier was having an off day, maybe?!)
Meh. Irrelevant.
I could care less that they do not need our business since they are incredibly popular. I get it: this won't ding them one bit. (For the record, tons of people who didn't belong to our tour group did make stops for purchase.) But there is no way I would allow anyone to treat my Mom the way that cashier did AND still make a sale off of me.
It really was unfortunate. I really liked a lot of their stuff, but I didn't feel bad, even at the least (I still don't as I write this up.)
Most likely will be a long minute before coming through this beautiful city again so that's one reason for not coming back here, but should I be fortunate enough to make a return trip, this place will be a hard pass. Sadly, that one person ruined it for me and managed to get this place on my list of one-and-done's.
