Food: Typical HK Cafe style, with HUGE portions. Most of the dishes were ordered were very good. My parents each ordered a version of their pork chops - the grilled version was very tender. The baked version was actually breaded and fried? Not sure if this was delivered correctly, but it was still nice and juicy. I ordered my fave ox tongue over spaghetti. It was on point. The tongue had been prepped nicely. It was SUPER tender and very delicious. Not fatty or tough at all! My brother ordered a grilled pork chop with fried egg. The egg is sunny side up, just be forewarned. Each meal came with an appetizer of butternut squash soup and dinner rolls. The soup was okay, but we sat right next to the room where they prepped it....straight out of the microwave. It also came with your choice of hot milk tea or hot coffee. Milk tea had condensed milk already added and maybe it was a cover up of something else, but my parents and I all had a stomach ache later in the night, most likely from the milk tea...eep! Dessert was included as well, your choice of yam soup or jello. Service: Could definitely use some work, we stood at the entry way for a good 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged us. I understand that no tables were free, but at least acknowledge your patrons! And the waitress definitely needs to understand the menu, my parents wanted to know the difference between HK style and Macau style to which she said "I don't know, that's a mistake on the menu" - what? An older guy walked over and explained the HK style is grilled while the Macau style is baked. Also...employees need defined roles. All the waitresses here not only take orders and deliver dishes, but they also pick up finished dishes and wipe down tables....and I'm certain they don't wash their hands between the clean/dirty tasks. I haven't been here in a while, but I remembered the good portions and homey feel of the place. I came by for a second visit in about a year recently because I was looking for dinner before we karaoke it up at VOIZ a few blocks away. They cleaned up the place and everything looks very nice from what I last remember. Maybe it is a fresh coat of paint? Hong Kong cafes are in my "comfort food" zone. My favorite is generally the baked pork chop or chicken over spaghetti. They generally make really good scrambled egg over noodles or rice dishes. The last two visits, the scrambled egg "gravy" dishes were tasty. My last visit I had the minced beef with raw egg, which was not bad. I was craving protein so I ordered this dish but the rice was slightly under cooked and the sauce slightly on the bland side. The raw egg was hiding snuggled in the rice under the blanket of hot minced meat sauce. Not a bad choice on a regular day I imagine. The servers were busy and running around in haste, but they usually respond to your requests unlike some restaurants where they ignore you usually because of being short staffed or what not. The baked fish and spaghetti with cream sauce ($10.50) barely had any sauce, very bland. The nice server gave me hot tea while I waited for my to-go food and watched the Warriors game. I ordered the HK style milk tea which I give 5 stars, most places can't make it as tasty as them. But if they don't improve their baked rice/spaghetti dishes, I will only come for their HK milk tea. Second time here but was disappointed. Asked for ala carte curry beef stew and I got two containers, one had less than the other. Also another $8 for ala carte. Didn't seem to be worth it. $50 for 2. Also the curry was very gritty this time. Fried tofu needed more salt and spice. Singapore noodles were dry. Not sure if I will go here again. Decided to take my mother and sister here because it was on the way back to my apartment. After giving this place another try, I decided to bump it up to 4 stars. There are a few overpriced items (you can get Fujian fried rice off-menu for ~$13), but most of the things I order are around $10. The portion sizes are truly immense, you'll always go home with leftovers. Meals also come with soup and a dessert. (Tonight's dessert was sweet taro soup, yum!) Another Hong Kong Style Chinese place for me to see how they stack up against other places. My go to dish is always Pork chop over rice with tomato sauce. This was the very first dish I had when I tried Hong Kong style Chinese food so it's only fitting I use that as my base of comparison. The pork chop was seasoned adequately but felt it was too dry. It came pre-sliced which was disappointing since it deprived me of the joy of making the first cut. That aside, I found the tomato sauce to be on the saltier side and lacked the balance I have found in other versions. As for the pork, it had a grainy quality to it as I chewed. The house special curry beef had a decent back of the throat kick and the meat was tender. I enjoyed the consistency but will admit it's not like most Chinese curries that I have tried. My sister in law actually had to send a dish back because the sauce, cream based, tasted sour. They said that the sauce was finished with lemon juice which is why it was on the sour side. They brought back her dish without lemon juice and it was fine. I do like the fact that they provide soup, drink and dessert with your meal! Ever since they switched owners, the place is definitely not as good and the Yelp check in offer no longer works :/ I had the minced beef with egg rice and it was below average and tasted chunky. My dad had the baked pork chop rice which was better but it was strange that the baked dish was way faster than my rice plate. At 1:17 am, it's plenty good to fill me up, although it's not exactly a scintillating feast by any means. The service can be a bit shoddy at times, with the waitresses sometimes acting like they don't want to be there. The good thing is that they have never kick us out no matter how long we sit and chill. S&E is actually a cool hangout spot for the local teenagers and college aged kids, and it looks like many of Sunset's finest like to patronize at the wee hours of the morning. I want to say I am a big fan of this place, but their menu seems simpler than before, with fewer choices. The service is very nice and friendly, which is a bit unusual for this genre of Hong-Kong-Style Chinese cafes. Open 'til 2am, so this place is usually on my short-list. For the uninitiated, think of this as the Cantonese equivalent of Dennys, complete with fried porkchops, but over rice. Man, I've been missing out on this Sunset gem for quite some time now!! Back in days, we would always hit up S&E after a night of partying since they are open till 2am everyday. However, it's been awhile since I have visited this place and boy, am I glad I did! They did a complete facelift, definitely an improvement with a much more modern feel, I like! :) I cannot tell you when the last time I was here, but it must have been awhile (I feel so bad that I've been missing out on something so good and so close for so long!). Menu item is still pretty much the same, your typical Chinese/American baked spaghetti and rice joint, but man, their wait staff is far better than any service I have ever gotten at ABC or other café joints with the same caliber. I cannot say enough about how impressed I was with their service! Granted, you don't expect much service from Chinese places, especially during late night when everyone is tired and cannot wait to go home. However, that was not the case here. It was 11pm on a Sunday night, 2 waitress and 2 owners in the back. Everyone was working hard and super perky! The waitresses were both super friendly and kept on coming over to check if we needed refills on our milk teas. That alone sold me, I didn't have to wave them down for stuff, they were so attentive on their own! Whoa a HK cafe spot that's actually clean, has friendly waitstaff, and pretty damn tasty food actually exists?! Arrived just after 11am to a completely empty restaurant. The waitress was especially patient and understanding, speaking thru her broken English and listening thru my broken Cantonese. This place actually has been here forever. I used to live near Golden Gate Park while I was in highschool and I actually did come pretty frequent back then. Somhow after I moved closer to it and I've stopped visiting until recently at my friend's recommendation. It opens till pretty late and it has a rather large selection of Chinese food and Chinese style American food. I've tried their steak spaghetti before and it was pretty yummy. My last few visits were pretty late. Since I don't want to gain too much weight from late night munching, I consistently ordered their Chinese fishball noodle soup. I can't complain much about it nor do I have much good things to say; it's pretty standard normal quality that you can get from most Chinese places in the city.
