Citizens Collection Station - A check-in at the gate.

    Citizens Collection Station

At first, I was a little annoyed when all the recycling dumpsters around town were taken away…read more.. being FORCED to bring our recycling to a single location seemed inconvenient. After coming to the Citizens Collection Station, my view has changed. For one, (and possibly the biggest positive) the containers have less contamination. (When dropping off recycling at the unsupervised locations around town, there would be tons of stuff in those containers that shouldn't be there: trash, plastic bags, plastic in the cardboard, cardboard in the aluminum, etc. I never understood why if you are going to make an effort to recycle, WHY you wouldn't do it correctly?!? MORONS! Now the whole container gets to go to the DUMP bc of laziness/not caring.) Anyways, I didn't notice any of that here at the Citizens Collection Station which is AWESOME! Secondly, this place is fenced/gated and manned by a HUMAN. Yes, while waiting in a 6-car line to get in for the first time, I was thinking, "WTF?!" But as it got to my turn, I was a little more understanding. They want to make sure who comes in and that they are in fact, citizens. I known it isn't *as* convenient as the 24/7 access but like I said, there is less contamination. Thirdly, there are MANY containers here. I'd day, at least 2 containers for each type of recyclable. Less chance of them being too full to put stuff in. Fourthly, you can bring yard waste (grass clippings, tree branches, shrubs, etc) as well as large household waste: furniture, etc. Oh yeah, and a container for those plastic shopping bags that we all have only about 1,000,000,000,000 of stuffed under our kitchen sink. Fifthly, FREE mulch if you want/need it. I don't at the moment but in the future, you never know. So all in all, I am a HUGE recycling nerd and am totally glad to have this collection station. I HATED seeing all the contamination of the previously placed bins around town. Knowing that I was doing the right thing and it was being negated by idiots infuriated me... Making my efforts pointless. The "only issue" I see with Midland's Recycling program is that it IS kind of a pain in the a**. Like, having to drive your own stuff to the center can definitely put off some people who'll not want to make the effort. I have always lived in places where both your garbage AND recycling are picked up CURBSIDE at your HOUSE. Totally convenient. So Midland's way has taken more time and effort on my part BUT I can't imagine throwing out recyclables. It's already weird to me to throw out GLASS. I've always recycled it. PLEASE come visit this center if you haven't already! Let's keep Midland beautiful... errrr... as "beautiful" as Midland can be. Recycle

The company I work for had a truckload of cardboard that we wanted recycled. Here's the process: + Have everything separated before arriving. + Don't be a douche bag and let your items fly out of the pickup going down the highway. I used a large cinderblock to weigh down all the boxes we had after stacking them somewhat strategically. Worked like a charm. + There's usually somebody at the entrance to assist you. The last few items are recycling. take your address and license plate as this is a service free of charge to Lea County residents. + once you've been directed to your spot, you can go ahead and turn your vehicle off and stay inside. They'll do the work! The staff members are very friendly and helpful. They keep the area clean and there is no debris or suspect metal or nails (or the like) where your vehicle will be driving. Now onto items that they recycle: Lea County residents household materials only (Not Commercial) Yard trimmings, weeds, and yard trash Furniture and mattresses Demolition material, wood, sheet rock, and carpet Large trailer loads of residential demolition Passenger Tires Tree limbs Appliances (Freon removed) and metal 2 Pallets per day Limbs Metal Tires (with and without rims) Cardboard (corrugated only) Batteries Used Motor Oil These "Accepted Recyclables" are allowed: Limbs Metal Tires (with and without rims) Cardboard (corrugated only) Batteries Used Motor Oil Visit their website for more what is not accepted hours of operation at https://www.leacounty.net.

Jarvis Metals Recycling - Literal heaps of steel scrap!

This is honestly such a cool place! I'm not a junkie, I just love scrapping. It gives me a good…read morefeeling watching metals getting recycled and knowing one day my old, dead water heater may become a car door or something. Jarvis is a cool place to watch this happen right in front of you. They stay constantly busy with the grinder running daily, shredding your old steel and feeding it onto a mountain to eventually be melted down. Am I nerding out too much here? They take pretty much any metal, especially steel, aluminum, and copper. If you're bringing in copper wire, you're going to need a letterhead certifying your possession of it, or a contractor's license. Otherwise, they're fairly easy going. Steel and aluminum cans are paid for in cash. The main desk staff are super nice and you can call them anytime to check prices. Most employees are friendly and helpful too, though I've met one guy that gave me a lot of crap while I was learning their sorting standards. All in all, a great place to feel like you're making a difference. Now, just don't go spend it all on drugs...

They were gonna let me leave pissed off but the employee who did it, took responsibility and sent me to get a used light from someone he knew. The managers were telling me I needed to take responsibility for going to their scrap yard? Like really? Signs posted everywhere "stay in vehicle at all times". How could it be my fault when the magnet operator dropped a freezer on my taillight? Brand new trailer, got the light replaced thanks to the employee and not the two managers who basically said it was my fault. Save your self the hassle and take it to A1 recycling. Jarvis don't take responsibility for their wrongs and want to put the blame on anyone but them. It's a $10 light, can't imagine if it was my car they hit!! Honest employees but poor managers.
