We didn't have the best experience here. First off the host wasn't very friendly, later into dinner we saw him swinging on the front porch swing smoking a cigarette. Breaks are understandable, but you should most definitely smoke out back while on the clock. The waitress was friendly but was not very concerned about our experience. Our soup and sides were both cold. She didn't even know when our main entree arrived. We received maybe three burnt pieces of the tiniest chicken tenders for my sons dinner. Both men and women's bathrooms were not very clean. All in all we had a horrible meal, & not so great service. I don't recommend this place. read more

I give credit where credit is due. One of the better dining experiences I've ever had. Hostesses and server were fantastic and accommodating with our kids. Our drinks and meals were great and even our 3 year old said "That was a really good dinner" on our way home. We will definitely be back for a few more margaritas and dinner! read more

We had to come here twice on our trip to Hatteras because the food was fantastic! What set Rusty's apart for us is the extra effort they put into the flavor and uniqueness of their dishes. You can tell their chef takes extra steps to make the dishes more complex than just some seafood and a baked potato thrown on a plate.Honestly, you can get decent fried seafood anywhere on Hatteras and it all tends to blend together, but Rusty's offers a wider variety of dishes. Our first visit, we really enjoyed the Coconut Mahi Mahi and the She-Crab Soup. The Sesame Seared Tuna was a beacon of freshness in the sea of fried food we'd been eating all weekend. On our second visit, the Calamari stood out because they added in fresh vegetables and used cornmeal to bread the squid. It wasn't greasy, which was another bonus. Our servers both nights were friendly and answered our questions about the dishes thoroughly. If you're looking for a place to break you out of the rut of basic friend seafood and salad bars in the Outer Banks, give Rusty's a try! We will certainly be back on our trip next summer! read more

Aside from the service, food was pretty good, portions were generous and respectable pricing. Our server took almost 10 minutes to greet us, preceded to bring us our drinks that clearly sat at the bar for a while. she then brought out my entree 20 minutes before my father's and so naturally I waited until he recited his food and my wings got cold. I'm a server as well I know the steps of service and our server simply needs to take a few minutes to learn a little more of the steps. I would say it was busy and I understood but it was not that busy and multiple tables had their servers come to their tables almost 5 times more then we ever saw ours. we would return, just for a different waitress. read more

After a bad experience at lunch we stopped here on a whim for dinner. It didn't even appear on Apple Maps. Our server, Jennifer was very busy with large parties but was very nice. The hush puppies were the best I've had in the area. My shrimp was very good. The kids all looked good, though their portions were huge! We took a bunch of boxes home. My wife and I both had the seafood sampler. You can order them either fried or broiled. It included flounder, clam cakes and shrimp. The seafood tasted fresh and was very good. As you would expect the service was somewhat casual. This is the Outer Banks so that is normal and what one wants and expects when vacationing here. A delicious selection of surf and turf. We started with the mussels appetizer served with crusty bread... delicious. My husband enjoyed the smoked ribs with coleslaw. And I enjoyed the local garlic shrimp Hawaiian style. True to its name it was buttery and garlicky but cooked tender to perfection. The best shrimp dish I've had on the coast!! We visited Rusty's 2 x during our 2 wk vacation in Avon, and on both occasions found the setting, service and food great. Our previous go to restaurant has been 'The Inn at Pimlico Sound' and will continue to be on our list. Rusty's is a casual version, with food made with the same attention to details of freshness, preparation/presentation and extraordinary deliciousness. We sampled multiple items on the menu both visits, but after trying the Calamari the 1st visit, we could not resist it on the 2nd. Fried green tomatoes, tuna, paella, fried oysters, shrimp and grits are all exceptional, as good as I have had at many of the better restaurants in DC/NOVA. We are now visiting Avon 2 x Yr, and will plan on visiting Rusty's multiple x every visit. I forgot to mention the desserts, but I would advise anyone to not miss trying these most delicious, not too sweet, WOW WOW WOW creations, made in house! read more

The blackened fish sandwich and chicken sandwich were both good. Fish tasted fresh, but the fries were a bit too soft. The maduros were good too, the right maduro texture. But the garlic cream that came with it was just strange tasting. Good portions, reasonable prices. I like the coffee here. The lemon berry mascarpone cake was so good, one of the best mascarpone cakes we have had. Light texture, not too dense, not too airy, nice fruit taste and not overly sweet, comes with drizzle sauce on top and a bit of whipped cream. Service from our waitress Debbie was good. The dining room is semi casual, there is a patio (but only one dining table) at the front were you can relax in their rocking chairs. Had a terrific dining experience. Very reasonably priced and the portions were more than adequate. We started out with the ceviche which was pretty tasty. All of the entrees were very good. "Shrimp fettuchini"(how the menu spells it) was bland as well and NOT worth $25.99. The only thing we found was good were the French fries on the kids menu. My husband and I went with our 7 and 1 year o my husband ordered a medium rare steak and I ordered yellow fin tuna and we got my son the fried shrimp. The server came out about 30 minutes later and said they were waiting on the kid's meal. The food finally came out and my husband's steak was way over done . The rest of us finished eating and his new steak finally came out. I had a sleepy one year old and a cranky 7 year old after all of this. The only thing they comped from the check was my husband's drink. I have been coming to Hatteras Island since 1981 and today was my best meal ever here. Chef takes her craft seriously and won several chef competition in her native Romania. One can tell by tasting her mahi mahi bites with Indian mango chutney remoulade, oysters fried and served on mini pancakes and the star of our dinner - scallops carbonara. You wouldn't think by looking at the outside that this place has such delicious food, but I promise it does! Fantastic "Hatteras" style clam chowder, tuna, and mahi mahi. The Tuna was caught the same day, much like their other local fish on the menu. We were worried that the experience wouldn't be the best since the outside/ambiance didn't look promising, but we took a chance and loved it. There was a line of people waiting at 6pm!
